When you set out to change, it’s essential to focus on positive drivers. These are the motivations that inspire and uplift you. Think about the joy of achieving a healthier lifestyle, the satisfaction of mastering a new skill, or the fulfillment of building stronger relationships. Envision yourself over and over again how your life will look after you mastered the change. Positive drivers create a sense of purpose and excitement, making the journey enjoyable and sustainable.


On the flip side, acting out of fearwhether it’s fear of failure, judgment, or the unknowncan be counterproductive. Fear-based actions often lead to stress, anxiety, and burnout. Instead of thriving, you might find yourself merely surviving. Research shows that positive emotions broaden our thought-action repertoire, allowing us to build lasting personal resources (Fredrickson, 2001).

 

The power of beliefs and inner attitude

Your beliefs and inner attitude play a pivotal role in your ability to change. Beliefs are the stories we tell ourselves about who we are and what we’re capable of. A growth mindset, as coined by psychologist Carol Dweck, is the belief that abilities and intelligence can be developed through dedication and hard work. This mindset fosters resilience and a love for learning, essential ingredients for personal growth.


Conversely, a fixed mindsetthe belief that abilities are staticcan hinder progress. If you believe you’re “just not good at something,” you’re less likely to put in the effort needed to improve. Your inner attitude, or how you perceive and react to challenges, also matters. Approaching change with curiosity and openness rather than resistance can transform obstacles into opportunities.


Studies have shown that our mindset significantly impacts our success and well-being. For instance, research by Stanford University found that individuals with a growth mindset are more likely to embrace challenges and persist in the face of setbacks (Dweck, 2006). Additionally, positive psychology research highlights that cultivating positive emotions can enhance our resilience and overall life satisfaction (Seligman, 2011).


Embrace the mindset and the journey

Remember, change is a journey, not a destination. And journeys can contain detours! So if you go back some steps or fall into old patterns, don´t stop and give up completely! Recognize it, analyze it, and then move on. If you embrace your personal journey with a positive mindset, you’ll find the process not only more manageable but also more rewarding.
