You finally want to enjoy a better life and are sure, that fundamental change needs to happen asap? If nothing changes, nothing changes, you believe. Agreed! However, please, wait a minute and learn how to tackle your behavioral change strategically to be more successful, save yourself some effort and become a self-development-pro in the long run!

Mindset shifts and behavioral changes need energy

It is evident, that a person needs some decent amount of unused capacity to learn, grow and for sure to shift their mindset and behavior. Change happens in stages and scientists found there is a mental and bodily readiness for psychological work. We recommend clients to focus on some basic lifestyle adjustments or do a pre-coaching preparation before or in the beginning of their work with a professional.

Let’s dive into it and you will get why this makes a huge difference and will positively impact your success.

3 factors that will set you up for a happier life

1. Sleep and regeneration build the foundation for your work

Guessing the first and very important factor? Indeed, it is sleep and recovery! According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 1 in 3 adults in the United States reported not getting enough rest or sleep every day. Nearly 40% falls asleep during the day, an estimated 50 to 70 million Americans have chronic, or ongoing, sleep disorders.

To tackle change, you need to be able to have positive feelings; and develop your vision. If you don‘t get proper recovery, your brain is not ready to process information fully, memorize it, be creative, or rewire itself. Neuroplasticity needs capacity and a sleep-deprived brain is not in training mode. Would you start trail running with a cold or an injured leg? No matter how hard you try, your behavior won’t change which leads to less self-efficacy and trust in your abilities.

2. Fueling your system properly – nutrition and substance abuse

Closely related to sleep are nutrition and the substances you feed yourself with. Give your body enough healthy food and hydrate properly before starting your change journey. Alcohol or other substances have a severe impact on our brains, and we want to cut them out before we start the work. (If self-medication/addiction is what you want to change in the first place, consider the facts mentioned above and focus on them first and please read our next articles about a behavioral change mindset.)

Be realistic enough to first allow yourself the time to truly sober up before you expect other mental changes to happen within you!

3. Often not enough – time and mental capacity

Speaking of time, lasting change needs realistic expectations. You will see better results and enjoy the process more if you tackle small goals, and be ok with taking baby steps. If your goals are high but unachievable, what did you win? So, honestly assess your situation and tasks on hand: What does your work ask from you right now, your caretaking for others and what other projects do you work on? Is a holiday or other activity coming up? Do you have a realistic capacity to work on your behavior? And if not now, what can you do to plan ahead? Discuss with a trusted person and supporter how you can provide the needed space, delegate tasks, and slow down for 1-3 months to focus on yourself.

The biggest mistake would be not to start at all – so start with a smart strategy

If you feel intimidated by this many things to consider before you even start working on your goals, please see them as the foundational part of your change project and dare to prepare! Taking your time and claiming the space for change to develop and be integrated properly is an important part of your selfcare and will set you up for more success! Stay tuned for more articles to be published on several practical aspects of mindset shifting and personal development.
