Siobhan Copland, Matchmaker & Relationship Coach

Tell us a bit about your story. How did you build your career until this point?

I always knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur. I feel it has been part of my blueprint. My father worked for himself from when I was very young. He would tell me stories about my grandparents and what they achieved as entrepreneurs. So, I decided quite early on, before I left school, that I was going to start my own business. My first idea was to open my own beauty salon, so I went to study beauty therapy at college, but then dropped out once I got a sales job during the summer holidays. I realised I could make a lot through commission and enjoyed making my own money at the age of 17. That was when I became independent, living on my own and paying bills.

I kind of went from sales job to sales job, then moved to Dubai for a few years, working in business development and corporate events, and started working in more of a corporate environment. When I moved back and started over, I was working a 9–5 job as well as writing for an online magazine about lifestyle, which included writing about dating. I started taking an interest in dating and relationships. I was also helping a comedian as his PA. He suggested I put on a singles night, and that’s where my passion for connecting people really started to show. When one of the first couples I introduced got engaged within six months, I was buzzing and couldn’t wait to get more people loved up!

I got made redundant from my 9–5, and the directors there told me not to get another job—focus on my business. I took their advice and haven’t looked back since.

What drives/inspires you?

Honestly, love! I really do love love. There is just no better feeling in the world than to love and be loved, and particularly for those people I work with who want a family. It’s such a huge goal in life, and a big part of life if that’s what you want. I don’t want them to miss that opportunity, so I am really driven to do my part in ensuring they have the best chance of fulfilling that dream.

Who inspires you to be the best that you can be?

My father has always been a big cheerleader and really helps me to see my potential. My fiancée has also become that figure in my life who truly supports and believes in my vision. My children too, as I take my responsibility as both a role model and a provider to them very seriously. I want them to see their mother doing work she loves, making a difference. Most recently, I got baptised as a Christian, and for me, Jesus really was the perfect example of how to live through love. I truly am trying to live according to His teachings.

What key advice do you have for achieving success?

Love what you do. If you’re not obsessed, then maybe you haven’t found your thing yet. For me, we are in a time when people want success fast, and it is becoming more possible, certainly, to reach financial goals quicker than in previous eras. But it’s still important to be genuine, to be consistent, and to want more than just to benefit yourself. I always think it's important to think in terms of who you can help and how. Once you figure out how to help people, the financial rewards will also come.

What is your business name, and how do you help your clients?

Cupid in the City. Essentially, we offer a relationship management service in that we help people to start, maintain, and sustain relationships through social opportunities, personalised introductions, and relationship guidance. Our members don’t just get dates—they get a support system to help them achieve their relationship goals.

What kind of audience do you target your business towards?

Our clients tend to be in their 30s to 50s, either looking for someone to start a family and build a long-term commitment with, or those coming out the other side of divorce and looking for compatibility and companionship. They are most often well-educated, cultured, professional, and accomplished entrepreneurs. Our focus is on those based in London, but we also offer a bespoke international search for clients abroad, provided they are happy to meet people in London.

In your experience, what are some common misconceptions about your industry?

Some people still don’t understand why someone would pay to meet someone. But I see it as you would pay a personal trainer to get in shape. You would pay a recruiter; this is no different. Yes, it may not seem as romantic as bumping into someone through some twist of fate, but the reality is the world is more connected by technology and less connected through in-person interactions. The work we do as matchmakers is to try to maintain that human connection.

Having a partner adds value to your life in so many ways, it really is an investment.
