If you grew up in a household where anxiety, emotional dysfunction, unpredictable moods, depression, and conflict were constant, you’re likely carrying some deep mental and emotional wounds from that experience. I know this well, as my childhood shaped my sense of insecurity, hypervigilance, and attachment trauma—patterns that have rippled into many areas of my adult life.

When you’re raised in an environment like this, it can leave lasting imprints on your mental and emotional well-being. You might find yourself dealing with anxiety, addiction, body dysmorphia, or even autoimmune issues. Emotional volatility may become the norm, where your emotions feel hard to control or quick to flare up.

These wounds run deep and can feel incredibly debilitating, making it difficult to create meaningful, fulfilling relationships or to fully embrace joy and fun in your life.

Creating safety in the body

Discovering Qigong changed everything for me. Initially, it offered me a sense of relief—finally, a way to calm my overactive mind and anxious body. But over time, as I delved deeper into the practice, Qigong became the key to unlocking layers of protection I had built around myself. Through slow, intentional movement, breathwork, and cultivating a presence within my body, I began to unwind the hypervigilance that had shaped my life for so long. Qigong did more than just relax me; it helped me access the deeper healing I needed by soothing my nervous system, shifting me out of fight-or-flight, and restoring my capacity to feel safe and grounded in my own body.

We often forget that we’re constantly immersed in Qi, the vital energy that surrounds and flows through us. We exist in an energetic field, an etheric soup of frequencies that our human senses can’t always perceive but that still profoundly affects us. From an early age, the experiences we go through—especially emotional dysfunction, trauma, or abuse—imprint themselves on our energetic field. These imprints shape our inner world, subtly programming us with patterns of behaviour that can be detrimental to our well-being.

Are you emotional sensitivity?

When these early experiences are chaotic or painful, we learn to survive in ways that don’t always serve us in the long run. Over-functioning, for instance, becomes second nature—we feel like we have to constantly be doing, fixing, and managing everything to feel some sense of control. The concept of boundaries can become foreign or blurry, as we’ve often been conditioned to prioritize others’ needs over our own. These patterns can be so deeply ingrained that they feel like our natural state when, in reality, they’re energetic distortions resulting from the unresolved wounds of our past.

If you’re anything like me, these experiences—or maybe it’s just an innate part of my soul—have led to extreme emotional sensitivity. I’ve become deeply attuned to the energy fields of people, places, and events. This sensitivity allows me to pick up on subtle vibrations that others might easily miss, but it can also feel overwhelming at times. It often feels like I’m absorbing or reacting to the emotions and energetic states around me, which can leave me feeling drained, overstimulated, or emotionally overloaded.

Balance your energy body

Balancing my own body and energy system has become essential self-care. Tending to my flow of Qi helps me to clear these energetic imprints and regulate my nervous system and emotions. Qigong has helped me to develop a high level of self-awareness, which allows me to see when past patterns are triggered and when I’m behaving from the energetic programs still held within.

Qigong works in such a subtle yet powerful way, often misunderstood as just another form of gentle exercise. This perception overlooks the depth and holistic benefits that the practice can have on the body, mind, and spirit. Qigong helps alleviate not only physical tension but also emotional pain, mental stress, and hormonal imbalances. The slow movements, combined with conscious breath and mindful awareness, activate the parasympathetic nervous system, helping the body shift from chronic stress into a state of regulation.

Qigong is self-healing

Somatic-based practices are known to support mental and emotional healing. Movement unlocks layers of stuck energy within the body and helps reconnect you with the authentic, unburdened version of yourself.

In my own healing journey, Qigong has been an invaluable tool for navigating the mental and emotional patterns shaped by early life experiences. It offers a way to reconnect with your body, calm your nervous system, and release deeply held energetic imprints. While the practice may seem subtle, its effects can be profound, providing relief from anxiety, stress, and emotional overwhelm.

Start with short qigong practices

If you’re new to Qigong, you don’t need to dive into long, complicated practices to experience its benefits. Short, simple and achievable is the way — just 5 to 10 minutes a day. As you become more consistent with short practices you may find yourself feeling more balanced, grounded and attuned to your own needs.
