The U Factor Strategy™ – What It Is and How It Changed My Life and Business

Executive Contributor Robb E. Sullivan

This is the story of how the U Factor Strategy™ was born, from a painful lesson I learned on the sales floor of a high-end electronics store in Houston, Texas, in 1983.

Five people in business attire sit around a table, smiling and talking. Bright, modern office setting, creating a positive and collaborative mood.

We sold very high-end audio and video systems, the kind of equipment that only wealthy clients knew about and could afford. And early on, I thought I had it figured out: follow the incentives. We had an incentive program called Spiffs on certain in-stock products they wanted us to move fast.

Every morning, the sales team checked the spiff list, bonuses for selling specific items. Fifty bucks for a certain receiver. A hundred bucks for a certain pair of speakers or a cassette deck. Extra cash for moving slow-selling gear.

For me, a college student at the time, it felt like a pot of gold. That spiff list became my sales strategy. I didn’t think twice. I pitched what paid me the most that day.

And it worked. Until it didn’t.

Some customers hesitated. Some walked out. Some didn’t come back. I couldn’t quite figure it out until it hit me: I wasn’t serving their needs. I was selling from my own agenda.

That moment wrecked me. Because deep down, I knew I wasn’t giving people what they wanted. I was serving me, not giving them what benefited them.

That’s when the U Factor Strategy was born.

“It’s about U, not me.”

The U Factor Strategy is built on three simple but powerful steps:

  1. Uncover what the client truly wants, beyond the surface.

  2. Understand what’s driving their decision, not just their budget, but their fears, pressures, and motivations.

  3. Move Unfettered.

When you use this strategy, you stop being a salesperson. You become a guide, a trusted advisor, a problem-solver. And that shift is everything.

Over the years, I discovered the U Factor Strategy didn’t just work in sales, it worked in every area of my business. Because with our clients, failure was not an option.

It helped our customer service team stay calm and confident under pressure.

It guided our installers, who often spent months in clients’ homes, to listen and adapt with care.

It shaped how our engineers and techs diagnosed and solved problems, no guessing, just understanding.

Even our receptionist used it, because the way she answered the phone could make or break trust from the first hello.

That’s why I credit the U Factor Strategy for our success.

I’ve used this framework to sell to over 150 A-list celebrities, athletes, and executives, including Babyface, Toni Braxton, Jennifer Lopez, Evander Holyfield, and Greg Maddux.

But I didn’t develop it at the top; I developed it before I was winning, when I was losing.

And even today, it still works, because people still want to feel heard, understood, and taken care of.

In future Brainz articles, I’ll break down each step of the U Factor Strategy and show you how to use it in sales, leadership, relationships, and life.

For now, I’ll leave you with this:

Are you acting from your agenda, or from what you’ve truly uncovered and understood?

That’s the U Factor difference.

Take action with clarity, confidence, and without hesitation, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.

Learning to act by stating “because you said…” became a powerful tool, not just in sales, but in every part of our business.

It reminded our team that when we truly listen and respond directly to someone’s words, we earn trust, solve the right problem, and serve at a higher level.
