HypnoBirthing is all about relaxation, trust, and embracing the natural flow of labor. Between surges (HypnoBirthing’s word for contractions), there is often a lot of downtime. Rather than watching the clock, you can fill those moments with activities that bring you comfort and joy.

Simple, enjoyable ways to pass the time while waiting to meet your baby

1. Nourish yourself: Eat and drink

Keeping your energy up with light, nourishing foods like fruit, yogurt, or smoothies can help you stay strong and focused. Hydration is just as important. Sip on water, herbal teas, or coconut water to keep your body refreshed and ready.

2. Move your body: Walk and sway

Gentle movement can encourage optimal fetal positioning and help labor progress smoothly. Whether it’s a slow walk, swaying with your birth partner, or bouncing on a birthing ball, movement keeps you engaged while promoting relaxation.

3. Soothe with touch: Massage and comfort measures

A soothing massage can ease tension and enhance relaxation between surges. Your partner can use gentle strokes, counterpressure on your lower back, or essential oils to create a peaceful, supportive environment.

4. Watch your favorite show or movie

Distraction can be a powerful relaxation tool. Watching a comforting show or movie, something lighthearted and familiar, can help keep you in a positive, calm state of mind.

5. Play a board game or do a puzzle

A simple board game, card game, or puzzle can be a great way to pass the time, keep your mind engaged, and share laughter with your birth team.

6. Take a warm bath

Soaking in a warm bath can provide deep relaxation, ease tension, and create a soothing, spa-like experience in early labor. Adding calming essential oils or dimming the lights can make it even more tranquil.

7. Escape into a story: Read or listen to an audiobook

A good book or audiobook can transport your mind elsewhere, providing a welcome distraction. Whether it’s an inspiring birth story or a feel-good novel, reading can help you stay centered and at ease.

8. Rest and recharge: Nap when you can

If your body allows, take advantage of the quiet moments to rest. Even short naps between surges can help conserve energy for the more active phases of labor.

9. Get creative: Bake or scrapbook

Baking can be a calming, mindful activity, and you’ll have delicious snacks for later! If you prefer something sentimental, try scrapbooking baby memories, organizing photos, or writing a letter to your little one.

Enjoy the downtime

On your birthing day, there is often more time between surges than expected, so embrace those peaceful moments. Do what makes you feel comfortable and relaxed, whether it’s watching a show, playing a game, or soaking in the tub. Enjoy the journey, one beautiful moment at a time.
