Do you ever feel like life has hit rock bottom with no clear way out? I’ve been there. After battling eating disorders, depression, and self-doubt for decades, I never imagined that one day, I’d be running seven marathons in seven days across seven continents. But here I am, sharing a journey that took me from despair to the South Pole and everywhere in between. This story isn’t just about running; it’s about resilience, mindset, and the power of human connection.

What is the great world race?

The Great World Race is a grueling challenge that takes runners to seven continents in seven days, testing not only physical endurance but mental fortitude. From the icy winds of Antarctica to the humid streets of Cartagena, participants run 42.2 kilometers each day, boarding planes almost immediately after crossing the finish line to travel to the next destination. It’s a race against time, jet lag, and one’s own limits.

For me, it was more than a race; it was a chance to prove to myself that I could push beyond the boundaries of what I thought was possible.

The journey from rock bottom

My journey didn’t start with a plane to Antarctica. It started years ago when I hit rock bottom, consumed by self-hatred, perfectionism, and an overwhelming sense of inadequacy. I had spent years battling eating disorders and depression, convinced that my body was the enemy.

Breaking free from those chains wasn’t easy. It took therapy, self-reflection, and learning to trust my body again, step by painful step. When I rediscovered running, I learned that movement wasn’t about burning calories or punishing myself; it was about reclaiming my strength and joy.

The challenges of running 7 marathons in 7 days

Physical toll

Running one marathon is tough. In fact, I only ran a single marathon before I signed up for the race. Running seven in seven days across varying climates is a different beast entirely. By Day 6 in Cartagena, my body was retaining so much water from the physical strain that my fingers were swollen, and my thighs felt twice their normal size. Severe chafing, digestion issues, and lingering soreness from not one, but two falls (I’m a klutz) added to the challenges.

Mental struggles

There were moments when I wanted to cry. In Miami, on the final day, I was overwhelmed by homesickness and exhaustion. But through tears and self-coaching, I remembered my purpose. I tapped into the tools I’d learned during my recovery—self-compassion, gratitude, and focusing on one step at a time.

Lack of rest

Sleep was a luxury we rarely had. We used the long flights between continents to sleep as much as we could, but our schedules were erratic. By the time we reached the next marathon location, we had to dig deep to find the energy to start again.

How I conquered the race

Mindset is everything

The key to success wasn’t just physical training—it was cultivating an unshakable mindset. I leaned heavily on affirmations, visualization, and reframing challenges as opportunities. For example, when faced with Istanbul’s digestive challenges (visiting every bathroom along the course a couple of times, plus the beach for good measure), I reminded myself, “I’m safe. Slowing down will help me to speed up.”

Body trust

Years of battling an eating disorder had taught me to mistrust my body. This race demanded the opposite. I learned to listen to my body’s signals, fueling it with what it needed to perform at its best. Even on days when I felt weak, I trusted that my body could carry me to the finish line.

Community connection

The most transformative part of the journey was the support from others. From Alessandro’s encouragement in Cartagena to Roger’s lifesaving ice cube tip to the giggles on the plane with my “roomie” Angel, the camaraderie among participants, volunteers, and staff kept me going. In those moments of connection, I found strength I didn’t know I had.

Lessons learned along the way

Resilience is built over time

Just like running a marathon, resilience is about taking one step at a time. Each challenge I overcame in life—whether recovering from an eating disorder or pushing through a grueling race—built the strength I needed to keep going.

Joy comes from the journey

Crossing the finish line in Miami was emotional, but the real joy came from the journey itself: the laughter, the tears, and the shared experiences with others. It reminded me that life isn’t about perfection; it’s about showing up.

Small gestures matter

Sometimes, the smallest acts of kindness—like an encouraging word or a shared ice cube—can make the biggest difference. These moments reminded me of the profound impact we can have on one another.
