In this article, I'm going to share with you the most powerful mindset shift that fuelled me to generate six figures in 2020 as a startup business in the world's most locked-down city. My journey is a testament to the transformative power of mindset and the belief that with the right perspective, you can achieve remarkable success even in the face of unprecedented challenges that you have no direct control over.
A leap of faith
As 2020 dawned, I faced a pivotal moment in my career. I had to decide whether to continue with my business coaching and finance broker business or follow my intuition and embark on a new path. I chose the latter, shutting down my existing ventures to open an energy-healing business just as the COVID-19 pandemic began impact every country. At first, it felt like a monumental mistake.
Economists and experts were predicting doom and gloom for businesses and the economy worldwide, and at first, that was my reaction too. My risk-averse nature, honed during my previous career as a business banker, had me embracing the concept of failure as if it were the only option. However, I’m wired a little differently and rather than allow this perspective to play out, I decided I wasn’t going to allow fear to dictate my destiny. I knew that I needed a mindset shift to stay on course and achieve the goals I had set for myself in 2020.
The key mindset shift
Throughout my career, whether as an employee in the corporate world or an entrepreneur, there's been one main mindset technique that I've leveraged consistently to guide me toward my desired outcomes. In 2020, this technique proved to be my guiding light, helping me secure a 50K client in a city under lockdown, even though I had no programs specifically designed for such high-level clients. Here's the key mindset shift that can increase your revenue and transform your life:
Expand Your Horizons: Instead of confining your revenue expectations to preconceived notions of how people should buy from you through funnels and launch sequences, ask yourself, "What else is possible beyond this?" Be open to unconventional possibilities.
Empathize and Understand: Understand that you can never fully grasp how your audience perceives you or what they're thinking. Take the time to consider and document the possible thoughts and desires of your niche and sub-niches as they engage with your content. Are there other ways they might want to work with you?
Embrace Opportunity: Decide whether you're open to unexpected and profitable client approaches beyond your established sales channels. If you were approached by a client who desired to work with you beyond what you have available, are you willing to explore that with them or squeeze them into your current programs, and services? You may have an opportunity for higher revenue now and the opportunity to grow your product suite in ways you would not have conceptualised on your own.
Believe in Possibility: Determine what beliefs you need to adopt to make these alternative income streams a reality. Are they legitimately possible? Your beliefs shape your reality, so if you don't believe it's possible, it won't be.
Establish Conviction: One of my favourite questions to ask my clients is ‘Who says you can’t?’ It’s a triggering question for most people. What I notice is that often people rule out possibilities because they have no examples of these possibilities happening previously, not because they can’t happen. If you don’t feel like the opportunities you’ve perceived are realistic, ask yourself, who told you this was not possible and start writing your own rules.
Where I landed
This mindset shift allowed me to welcome a 50K client into my business, that I hadn't planned for initially. This client has been with me since 2020, and I've since developed additional options to support clients at this level throughout the year. I've learned that even in challenging times, like the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 or a pandemic, success is achievable with the right mindset.
