Beatrice Jane Rabkin, Nutritional Consultant

Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

Hi, I'm Beatrice, I have a degree in Nutritional Medicine and a passionate advocate for nutritional and natural medicine, based in Cape Town, South Africa. My journey from being a pharmacist to a fertility awareness educator and reproductive health coach has been driven by my commitment to understanding and addressing the challenges in female reproductive health.

What was the inspiration for your business, Natural Fertility Thriving Health?

I understand the emotional rollercoaster that comes with reproductive health challenges. My own family's experience sparked a passion within me to help others overcome similar struggles. When my daughter faced a miscarriage during her first pregnancy, it was a call to action that led me to dive deeper into the world of natural fertility and reproductive health. I was determined to support her and my son-in-law in achieving their dream of starting a family.

Through specific dietary and lifestyle changes, we worked together to create a healthier environment for conception. Their hard work paid off – they welcomed a beautiful, healthy baby boy, my amazing grandson!

Now, my daughter Nicola joins me in spreading the message of hope and empowerment through Natural Fertility Thriving Health. Together, we're committed to helping you navigate your own journey to optimal reproductive health and wellness.

How does your approach to fertility differ from the conventional approach?

My approach to fertility is rooted in understanding the unique aspects of your personal history and bio-individuality. I believe in empowering you with knowledge about your body, enabling you to make informed decisions about your fertility journey. My extensive studies have equipped me with a unique understanding of the intersection of nutritional medicine, gut microbiology, lifestyle habits, detoxification, fertility, and reproductive health.

Breathing would rarely, if ever, be part of a fertility program, and yet optimal breathing creates an environment which improves oxygen, blood, and nutrient flow around the body, thus increasing the nourishment of vital reproductive organs. All this is part of our program to improve your health and that of your egg and sperm.

But my goal extends beyond just conception and a healthy pregnancy. I am committed to giving your children the gift of good, long-term health. By addressing and improving your health now, we can positively impact the health of future generations. This is the power and promise of a root-cause focused and patient-centered approach to fertility.

We suggest a six-month program when preparing for conception and pregnancy. The egg and sperm require approximately 100 days to grow from either primary preantral follicles in the case of the egg or from stem cells in the case of sperm. Our experience is that it takes 3 months to implement significant changes in our diet and lifestyle and then 3 months of eggs/sperm to grow within this healthier environment.

Tell us a bit about a success story using your method.

Imagine being able to overcome the heartbreak of multiple miscarriages and finally achieving your dream of becoming a mother. For Jen, this was a reality. After experiencing three miscarriages, she sought help from Natural Fertility Thriving Health and underwent comprehensive testing, which revealed high ferritin. Elevated ferritin, often asymptomatic, is a marker for inflammation, a crucial factor in fertility that is often overlooked by conventional medical practitioners.

Despite the initial setback of a fourth miscarriage, soon after we started working together, further testing revealed a possible cause and Jen persevered and made the necessary dietary changes, embracing an anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense diet and supplementing with food-sourced nutrients.

This holistic approach finally brought her ferritin levels into optimal range, and she was able to conceive and give birth to not one, but two beautiful children. This is a testament to the power of personalized care and the importance of addressing underlying health issues in achieving optimal fertility.

Why do you think nutrition plays such a crucial role in fertility?

Nutrition plays a vital role in natural fertility support, and it's essential to understand its impact on your body. Chronic stress can affect digestion and nutrient absorption, so along with optimising what you eat, managing stress is crucial. The food you eat becomes the foundation of your being, supporting various bodily functions, including reproductive health. A nutrient-rich diet can have a profound impact on fertility, improving egg and sperm health, enhancing genetic quality, and supporting a healthy pregnancy. It can also help prevent postpartum depression and increase the chances of successful breastfeeding. By prioritizing nutrition, you're not only supporting your fertility but also investing in the long-term health and wellbeing of your children and future generations.

How can nutrition support IVF pregnancy outcomes?

A common misconception about fertility is the over-reliance on In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) or other fertility treatments as a guaranteed solution to conception challenges. While IVF can be a helpful tool, it's not a guarantee of success. In fact, IVF success rates vary, and it's a complex and invasive process.

Good egg and sperm health are crucial for a healthy pregnancy, whether you're trying to conceive naturally or with IVF. Unfortunately, many people overlook the importance of egg and sperm health when considering fertility treatments.

That's why we recommend taking a holistic approach to fertility. Good nutrition and healthy lifestyle habits can improve your natural fertility and increase your chances of success with IVF. It's not either/or - it's both/and. Natural fertility can support fertility treatments like IVF to help you achieve your dream of becoming a parent.

Don't give up hope - with the right approach, you can overcome fertility challenges and bring a healthy, happy baby into the world.

If you were able to suggest one thing to improve fertility, what would it be?

One piece of advice I wish every client knew before starting their fertility journey is the importance of avoiding endocrine-disrupting chemicals as much as possible.

The average baby in the Western world is born with over 200 chemicals in the umbilical cord, highlighting the prevalence of these harmful substances.

This means reconsidering all cleaning products in your home and opting for natural ingredients, avoiding all synthetic fragrances, eliminating plastic and non-stick utensils from the kitchen, and replacing your wardrobe (especially underwear) with natural fibers.

While "detoxing" may be a trend, I advise my clients to first detox their homes of these toxic ingredients. Only then can we discuss how to effectively and carefully detox the body. By reducing exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals, we can significantly improve your chances of a successful natural fertility journey and a healthy pregnancy.
