Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had unlimited time? If only that were possible. We talk so much about time-saving time, not having enough time, and wishing for more time to do everything in life. But I wish that, just as we constantly check and stay conscious of time, we did the same with energy.

Man in suit in office looks at smartwatch showing "ENERGY LOW." Speech bubble: "My energy is low, I am going for a quick walk."

I wrote the script for an award-winning short film that focused on time and the importance of living in the moment. There are so many movies, shows, and reels that remind us how valuable time is and how crucial it is to use it wisely. But how often do we talk about managing our energy? I can’t wait to make a film about protecting your energy someday!

Just as we have a habit of checking the time, wouldn’t it be great if we regularly checked our energy levels? Imagine if we could keep refilling our energy bucket before it runs empty, doing more of what energizes us and less of what drains us, aligning our lifestyle accordingly so we can accomplish everything we truly want.

When we maintain a steady supply of energy and keep our bucket at a good level, we can actually achieve more in less time.

Who knows? Maybe one day, we’ll have a watch that tracks our energy levels, haha! But until then, we need to check in with ourselves. Let’s take a moment to pause, listen to our minds and bodies, and ask:

  • How am I feeling?

  • Where is my energy level right now?

Why is it important to keep our energy bucket full?

For both obvious and not-so-obvious reasons.

Sometimes, we feel frustrated, angry, or even overwhelmed to the point of tears, not because the situation is impossible but because we lack the energy to think logically and tackle the problem. Instead, we react emotionally, often making things worse.

When we are drained, we dwell on what happened, replay conversations in our heads, overanalyse situations, and struggle to find solutions. We may even make not-so-good decisions that we later regret.

When you prepare for an exam or an interview, getting a good night’s rest, eating well, and staying in a positive frame of mind are key to performing well. Why? Because when our energy levels are high, we are sharper, more confident, and able to give our best.

How can we refill our energy bucket?

Filling our energy bucket isn’t difficult; it’s actually quite simple! But it does require practice and discipline because once filled, it doesn’t stay full forever. It’s an ongoing process.

Here are some effective ways to refill your energy bucket:

  • Sleep well: Quality rest is the foundation of energy.

  • Eat well: Nutritious food fuels both body and mind.

  • Exercise regularly: Movement boosts energy and mental clarity.

  • Maintain a positive mindset: Your thoughts shape your energy.

  • Celebrate yourself: Acknowledge your achievements and growth.

  • Engage in positive self-talk: Be your own biggest cheerleader.

  • Do creative things: Creativity is an energizing force.

  • Surround yourself with uplifting people: The right company matters.

In the corporate world, we often have time management training. But wouldn’t it be amazing if companies introduced energy management courses as well?

Imagine if people started talking about energy the way they talk about time:

  • “I don’t have energy.”

  • “Talking to this person drains my energy.”

  • “Meditation fills my energy bucket.”

  • “Swimming, cycling, and working out recharge me.”

  • “Sometimes, doing nothing at all helps restore my energy.”

There’s no right or wrong time to start learning the art of filling your energy bucket. The day you decide to start is the best day.

This practice has the power to transform your life, helping you feel happier, more productive, and capable of achieving so much more.

What drains our energy bucket?

Just as some activities fill our energy bucket, others drain it. Here are some common energy drainers:

  • Getting angry: Drains emotional and mental energy.

  • Feeling anxious: Overthinking exhausts the mind.

  • Negative self-talk: Lowers confidence and motivation.

  • Overanalysing situations: Creates stress and fatigue.

The key is to become aware of what drains you and make intentional choices to protect and replenish your energy.

So, the next time you check the time, take a moment to check your energy too. It might just change the way you live!
