1. Embrace the 1° Principle

Too often, people try to overhaul their lives overnight, only to burn out quickly. The 1° Principle –making small, doable changes that compound over time – is a more sustainable approach. Start with one manageable habit, like eating a fruit or vegetable with each meal or adding a 10-minute walk to your routine. Once that habit feels natural, build on it by introducing another small change. Over weeks and months, these incremental shifts add up to a completely transformed lifestyle. The beauty of this approach is that it feels less overwhelming and more achievable.

2. Adopt a 'Both/And Mindset'

Maintaining motivation during a weight loss journey begins with adopting a "both/and mindset": you can work toward your weight loss goals and give yourself grace along the way. Progress isn’t about perfection – it involves consistency, curiosity, and balance. This combination allows space for rest, missteps, and adjustments. Remember, setbacks don’t erase progress; they’re opportunities to learn and recalibrate. Celebrate the small victories, like choosing a balanced meal or taking a mindful walk, as these moments build momentum. Focus on creating habits that feel sustainable, not extreme, and remind yourself that change takes time. Motivation often follows action, so take it one step at a time and trust the process. And above all, be kind to yourself – your journey is not linear, however, it’s uniquely yours.

3. Turn your Goal into a Mission

My clients often want to make major changes in their health, life, or business, and they are ready to embark on transformative journeys lasting six to twelve months or more. Because sustaining motivation will be critical, one of their first steps is using a practice called "The Five Whys" to turn their goal into a mission. In a nutshell, I ask them, "Why must you accomplish this goal?" and then ask, "Why?" again and keep asking until they reach their core motivation. Once they have their answer, they write the whole goal in the format of – their goal plus because (the last Why answer). It'll look like this, "I will walk 10k steps a day this year because my young children need a father, and I don't want it to be someone else."

4. Discover your 'Why' to be Motivated

Your weight loss journey is about so much more than the numbers on a scale – it’s a sacred opportunity to honor and love the beautiful being you already are. Ask yourself: What is my deeper "why"? Is it vibrant health, boundless energy, or the joy of moving freely in the world? When you connect to that inner purpose, you awaken a power greater than willpower – your own divine inspiration. Affirm to yourself daily: I am worthy of my own love, and every choice I make nourishes my mind, body, and soul. Trust that, as you align with love, the results will follow effortlessly, guided by your inner light.

5. Focus on your Progress

Staying motivated on a weight loss journey is like learning a new dance move – it takes effort, creativity, and the occasional misstep to keep it interesting! Start with small, achievable goals; you’re not climbing Everest, just avoiding the cookie aisle for now. Celebrate every victory, no matter how small – choosing water over soda is practically a superpower! Surround yourself with people who cheer you on, not food pushers who try to tempt you at every turn, because every hero needs a squad that’s got their back! Shake things up with new workouts, or dance like nobody’s watching. When you hit a snag, shake it off, refocus, and remember that one slip doesn’t define your journey. Progress, not perfection, is the name of the game – it’s a journey, not a race, and you’re crushing it!

6. Reframe your Mindset

Maintaining your motivation during weight loss is challenging – but possible. It takes energy and sustained focus to continue engaging in new healthier ways of eating and adding daily movement to your life. Considering your weight loss journey as just that – a legit journey – can help you focus your time and effort on positive health behaviors and keep healthy choices front and center daily. Reframing who you are and how you look at yourself is another powerful tool. Sometimes we lose weight but cling to old mindsets and limiting beliefs about ourselves and our bodies. Pause daily to reflect on the beauty and wonder of your body in today's shape and size. Practice gratitude for your physical self as you show up today. Extend your thinking into a new vision of yourself. Play with the idea of seeing yourself as a healthy, powerful, vibrant physical being. Think about what sustainable practices this beautiful physical being requires to flow through life in this preferred state and then commit to those practices each day.
