They say everything in life happens for a reason. As I reflect on the events of last August 2023, a pivotal moment stands out, even when things are tough, there's always something good waiting to happen, showing us that we can get through difficult times.

I was processing the finalization of my divorce after a challenging mediation process when an unexpected opportunity emerged. A producer from the TV show Designing Spaces reached out, expressing interest in featuring my company in an episode titled "Moving for One: How to Create a Stress-Free Move." Little did I know that this project would be a guiding light during one of the most challenging periods of my life.

My experience with loss

August marked a period when the weight of three significant life events happened to me all at once – dealing with the complexities of divorce, striving to maintain my business, and mourning the passing of my best friend of thirty-eight years. In a world where they say the top three most stressful experiences are death, divorce, and moving, I found myself navigating all three simultaneously. Despite the magnitude of loss and change was overwhelming, I was granted with an unexpected opportunity to share my experience on a national platform.

Embracing change and moving forward

In the face of adversity, the decision to embrace change became a cornerstone of my coping mechanism. The TV show episode, "Moving for One," mirrored the transitional phase I was navigating. It also symbolized the resilience needed to endure life's challenges.

Going through loss and change made me think about the things I did to move forward, and here are some ways you can overcome it too.

1. Acknowledge and accept emotions

Emotions are a natural response to loss. It's crucial to acknowledge and accept these feelings rather than suppressing them. Allow yourself the time and space to grieve, and understand that healing is a gradual process.

2. Find support in unlikely places

During difficult times, support can come from unexpected sources. In my case, the opportunity to share my story on a TV show not only provided a platform for my company but also connected me with a broader community offering encouragement and understanding.

3. Focus on what you can control

Identify aspects of your life that you can control even though you are experiencing difficulties. Whether it's restructuring your daily routine, setting small goals, or seeking professional help, taking charge of manageable elements can provide a sense of stability.

4. Celebrate small wins

Recognize and celebrate small victories along the way. These can be as simple as completing a challenging task, maintaining a positive outlook, or finding moments of joy amid the difficulties.

5. Embrace new opportunities

Change often brings unexpected opportunities. While it's essential to mourn the losses, be open to exploring new paths and possibilities. The TV show opportunity, which initially seemed unrelated to my struggles, became a catalyst for positive change.

Coping with loss is a unique and personal journey, but it is possible to find strength and resilience even in the darkest moments. By acknowledging emotions, seeking support, focusing on controllable elements, celebrating small wins, and embracing new opportunities, individuals can navigate the complexities of loss and emerge stronger on the other side. Life's challenges may be daunting, but within them lie opportunities for growth, healing, and a renewed sense of purpose.
