With so many fads around, it’s impossible to know how to eat. Everywhere you look, someone is raving about their “diet,” while the next person swears by something completely opposite.

Hands gesturing over a dining table with plates of food, lit by a chandelier. A cozy room with visible window and curtains. Warm ambiance.

I want to offer another way of looking at nourishment. Just as with healing, there is no “one size fits all.” Each body is unique. The best “plan” you’ll ever follow is the intelligence of your own body. When you listen, you’ll naturally choose what makes you feel vibrant and well, leading to your optimal health.

Remembering the basics

Long ago, when people hunted for food, it was done with intention and reverence. An animal was killed only when needed, and its life was honoured. That’s why I start here, because, like so many of humanity’s problems, our eating issues stem from disconnection, from nature, from the planet, and from ourselves.

If we were in tune with our soul and body, we would know what we need. Our bodies are talking all the time, we’ve just stopped listening. Diet plans and fads become unnecessary when you eat consciously, guided by your own inner signals.

A little about my story

I don’t really have a label for myself. Although I’m mostly vegan, the closest word I have for myself is “vegetarian.” I wasn’t always this way. As a child, I was an omnivore, but I went through phases where I wouldn’t touch meat, feeling disturbed by seeing animals on my plate.

Today, I don’t eat or use animals for ethical reasons, plain and simple, but I don’t make it my identity. In fact, most people don’t even know this about me until it comes time to plan a meal together. Too many people go vegan, carnivore, or flexitarian because it’s a trend. My message is, listen to your body, eat what it wants, and allow others the same freedom.

When I first became vegan some 15 years ago, I joined online groups expecting like-minded animal lovers. To my surprise, I found some of the most judgmental, preachy spaces I’d ever seen. The way they attacked meat-eaters was awful. That experience cemented for me how important it is to drop judgment of others as we move toward a new earth.

Times have changed

In the past, people hunted only as needed, used every part of the animal, fur and skins for warmth, bones for tools, and always offered thanks. In modern times, we’ve become disconnected. Even the names have been softened, cow has become beef, pig is pork, sheep is mutton, to the point that the link between the animal and food is now invisible.

Whether you eat meat or not, it’s time to remember that these are souls just like us, wearing different suits. Today, animals are treated as commodities, their lives cut short and lived out in awful conditions. If we are going to consume their bodies to sustain ours, we owe it to them to ensure they’re treated with care, respect, and love while they’re alive. We promised to look after the animals of the Earth, and up until now, we’ve done a really bad job. We can and must do better.

You are your best guide

If you’re a vegetarian and feel like an egg, eat it. If you eat meat, take a moment to thank the animal that gave its life and eat with intention. The point is to move back into consciousness in everything we do. We are not “above” the animals, we are all part of the same web of life.

You are unique

Veganism and its opposite, carnivorism, have gained bad press because some people become ill. Some thrive on plants, while others need meat. If you’re listening to your body, you’ll know what nourishes you. I thrive without meat, but I know others who simply cannot function without it. Ultimately, listening to your own body is the most radical diet you’ll ever follow.

Consciousness is key

You may not be able to change the whole system overnight, but you can eat with presence. Take a moment before you eat to give thanks. Even a silent acknowledgement sends a ripple into the field. This small act of gratitude is the beginning of reconnection, back to the planet, to all of its inhabitants, and to your own soul. Every bite is an opportunity to reconnect, with your body, the Earth, and all its beings.
