We live in a world that often suggests that when our loved ones die, our connections are put "on pause" until we join them in death. But what if we could create a meditative space called "Soul Sanctuary" that not only allows us to continue our relationships in new and meaningful ways but also serves as a catalyst for our personal growth and spiritual development?

What is soul sanctuary?

Soul Sanctuary is a unique world that you create while in a meditative state. It involves using your imagination, creativity, whimsy, playfulness, and curiosity. This process is similar to building a fantasy world in a video game. Regardless of your ability to visualize clearly, it is essential to trust the process and have faith that, over time, your inner Soul Sanctuary will evolve into a place filled with magical and heartwarming connections with your loved ones in spirit. Trust the process, and it will guide you to where you need to be.

How do we begin to connect with loved ones?

  1. To create your own Soul Sanctuary, start by choosing a location that feels peaceful and inspiring to you. This location should be a place you can easily visualize, or, if visualization isn't developed for you yet, consider a location from your memories where you can imagine yourself being. Some examples of these places include a beach, a clearing in a forest, a cozy cabin in the woods, a cliffside, the clouds, a cave, a crystalline city, or a hot spring—among many others!

  2. Take some time to reflect on this location, and look for a photo that evokes this space for you. Keep in mind that this space is unique to you, so it doesn't have to adhere to logical reasoning. If you feel drawn to imagine a cloud within the ocean, trust that inspiration and follow that calling!

  3. Engage your senses. What does this place look like? Are there any sounds? What are the smells? How does it feel to walk in this space? Let your imagination run wild. The more senses you incorporate, the easier it will be for you to visualize this place in your mind’s eye.

  4. Once you feel that your space is defined, it's time to begin your inward journey. Remember that this is a meditative experience. The goal isn't to silence all your thoughts but to slow down your breathing and allow your mind to relax, enabling you to journey within.

  5. Consider lighting a candle or playing soft music to create a calming atmosphere. Get comfortable and begin to breathe intentionally. If you're already familiar with breathwork, feel free to use the technique that suits you best. If this is your first experience with breathwork, start by practicing deep breathing. Inhale deeply, visualizing the breath filling you from your toes to the top of your head. As you breathe in, imagine yourself filling with light. As you exhale, picture yourself releasing all worries and fears. Repeat this process several times until you start to feel deeply relaxed.

  6. Set an intention to connect with what is for your highest good as you imagine yourself walking through a gate or doorway into your Soul Sanctuary. Notice all that you sense as you calmly traverse your inner world. Some may wish to do this over several days, simply getting used to their sanctuary. If so, skip to step 8.

  7. If it feels right, imagine a bench where you plan to meet a loved one. Visualize yourself sitting on the bench and inviting them to join you. Pay attention to whether you can see them clearly, catch glimpses of their appearance, or feel their presence. This experience will provide insights into the senses you'll use when connecting with them. You may have a strong sense that they are there, even if you don't see or sense them clearly. Trust in this process and remain curious. Initially, it may be enough to simply connect. Over time, you'll be able to expand your connections to include conversations and shared experiences.

  8. When you feel complete, picture yourself walking back through your gate or doorway, fully returning to your body, your room, and the present moment. Consider ringing a bell to help bring your energy back fully.

  9. Repeat this affirmation to yourself: "I close all doorways and pathways to my Soul Sanctuary, and I bring my energy back to this present moment." Visualize your energy filling your body with light and forming a three-dimensional outline around you, like a chalk drawing.

Establish a regular practice to fully benefit from your Soul Sanctuary. Set aside dedicated time frequently to reconnect with this inner space. Consistency strengthens connections, allowing you to nurture relationships that transcend the physical realm.

In the third article of this series, we will explore simple and nurturing ways to expand your Soul Sanctuary. Engaging with your personal Soul Sanctuary can enhance your relationships with loved ones and deepen your connection with your supportive spirit team.

Conclusion

Connecting with our loved ones in the sacred space of Soul Sanctuary fosters healing, support, and love. This commitment to connection enriches our lives and honors the importance of those we cherish, providing solace and strength in our journey. Let your Soul Sanctuary be a beacon of love wherever you go, bridging the gap between the seen and unseen.
