Nicole Allegretti moved to NYC at 18 and attended Marymount Mahattan College where she received her bachelors degree in theatre and media studies. This time deepened her love of the arts, writing, theater and film. Similar to therapy, she loves that theater and writing is all about expressing oneself. Writing poetry and stories in highschool and college led her to the joys of eventually feeling connected in unexpected ways through her writing. During her own health crisis, she went to a western doctor blood tested her and then sent her on her way. She then sought the help of an acupuncturist who supported her healing to clear her hives in 4 weeks. After becoming fully aware of the mind, body spirit connection, she attended a 200 hr yoga training program and wanted to dive deeper. She attended Pacific College of Oriental Medicine in NYC for 3 years while she worked part time and then completed her masters in acupuncture in 2013. She began practicing as soon as she graduated and became a part of an integrative health center in Warwick NY. She returned to Eastern School of Acupuncture to finish her herbal certification and completed a Sports Medicine Acupuncture training. She is currently working on her doctorate in Chinese Medicine with the Integrative University of Virginia. She is a level 2 sound healing practitioner with the International Academy of Sound Healing and began playing sound healings after she experienced her brother, from addiction disorder, and mother, from heart complications, passing into spirit in 2015 within a month of eachother. Sound is one of the few things that provided comfort to her spirit and she is grateful to share it with you! This is when she started writing more as well, and writes with the intention to support the spirit and children as well as adults who may feel the need for emotional connection through story. - Godelieve van der Leij, Experience Expert in Recovery, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine
Godelieve van der Leij obtained a Master's Degree in International Business in the Netherlands. After graduation she followed her dreams; started a sales traineeship at IBM and build a career in both Sales and Digital at Nike. To her own surprise, she even made it to Nike's World Head Quarters on the US Westcoast. But then she got sick. Until her diagnosis with a mental disorder, her life had been linear, but the ups and downs of recovery taught her life is like a set of waves, sometimes you're up, sometimes you're down. However tough the years that followed, she never gave up and always kept looking for opportunities, since she is a true optimist. For the past eight years she followed many courses on personal development and did volunteer work for various organizations, mainly focussed on social work, administration and digital support, given her own background. During this process she became the founder of a website (2014) and a blog (2018) called The Surf of Life, and started to advocate her lessons learned from her own recovery process and that of the Recovery Movement as a whole. It includes stories about personal growth and enlightenment, but also about the comparison between the (Mental) Health Care and Business Industries. Moving forward she will continue to spread the word about the parallels between life and surfing, and share her stories and experiences. She knows like no other that getting sick does not just mean you might lose your job, but also your habitat, your relationships and your social status. She has gained thorough 'lived experience' in how to overcome adverstity and how to re-invent yourself in a changed reality. As an Experience Expert in Recovery she hopes to support as many people as she can during their recovery process and to connect both Business and (Mental) Health Care, since she speaks the languages of both worlds. Reflect on the kind of work environment that energizes you and whether your priorities, such as work-life balance or financial stability, would be impacted. Assess your willingness to take on the risks and challenges of starting anew, and think about how this transition fits into your broader life circumstances and aspirations.
