- Eddie Stern, Founder, The Breathing App for Diabetes, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine
After suffering from two extreme, back to back cases of pneumonia in 2004, and a long recovery, Eddie went to a cardiologist who diagnosed him with several congenital heart defects: Mitral valve prolapse, a decaying mitral valve, and a bicuspid aorta. While these are common structural heart anomalies, and are generally not life-threatening on their on, in combination they can lead to an increased chance of enlargement of the heart or aortic dysfunction. This created a constant source of stress for Eddie: worries about mortality, being a new father, and a small business owner with no insurance. He became interested in seeing if he could support his cardiovascular health through Yogic practices, which led to the eventual discovery that through sustained, slow breathing practices, he could permanently alter his resting heart rate (from high 70’s to the present day 56-58) and lower his blood pressure to extremely good measures. It also improved his sleep quality and ability to fall asleep within minutes of getting in bed. Yoga on its own was not enough to do this. It was slow breathing that did the trick. The Breathing App is the result of a decade of breath and health experimentation. It is the one, single practice that effected not only improved health measures, but removed the stress of heart disease and allowed him to positively and proactively engage with cardiovascular measures, health, and support. There are hundreds of scientific papers on the positive effects of slow breathing on cardiovascular health, but very few cost effective and affordable guidance delivery systems. That’s the problem that The Breathing App was created to solve. - Anne-Catherine Bédard, Research Scientist at Dow & Founder of Labcoat & Leggings, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine
Anne-Catherine Bédard is a PhD chemist, artist, and the founder of Labcoat and Leggings, a movement that merges science, creativity, and empowerment. For over a decade, she worked at the intersection of innovation and sustainability, leading cutting-edge chemical research and discovering new ways to transform materials and ideas. During a period of personal transition, she turned to painting as a way to reconnect with herself, her emotions, and her sense of purpose. What began as a quiet creative experiment soon became a powerful form of expression and transformation. Through art, Anne-Catherine rediscovered a part of herself that logic alone couldn’t reach. What started as color on canvas evolved into a mission: to help others break free from the boxes they thought they had to fit into and step unapologetically into their light. Her work is a celebration of individuality, authenticity, and the courage to show up fully as yourself. Each of her pieces is infused with both intention and emotion, a balance of the analytical mind of a scientist and the expressive soul of an artist. She believes color has the power to inspire, uplift, and empower, serving as a universal language of connection. When she paints, emotions flow into shapes and hues that tell stories words often can’t. Through Labcoat and Leggings, Anne-Catherine has created more than a brand, it’s a community of curiosity, confidence, and creativity. She also writes empowering coloring books and co-creates custom art that aligns with the energy and story of each individual collector. Her ultimate goal is to help people see that being bold, kind, and authentic are not contradictions, they are the chemistry of confidence itself. Her mission is clear: to ignite a movement of unapologetic self-expression where every individual and every story can shine in their own unique light. Because the world doesn’t need perfection; it needs people brave enough to be fully themselves and in doing so, inspire others to do the same! - Joanne Louise Bray, Founder of Plantlife Joy, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine
Joanne: A journey to joy through plants Life, much like nature, unfolds in seasons. There are moments of light and growth, and there are times of challenges, where everything seems to pause, waiting for renewal. For Joanne, her journey with mental health mirrors these seasons, and at the heart of the healing process lies the profound power of plants. Born and raised in England, Joanne always had a quiet admiration for nature. Her favourite place as a child was her grandfather’s garden; She would spend countless hours writing poetry or picking the roses to make rose water, much to her grandfather’s disapproval. Yet, like many of us, the demands of adulthood slowly distanced her from these simple joys. With responsibilities mounting up at an unrelenting pace and being a single working mother, the throes of stress and anxiety took over. It was during a particularly challenging chapter that she stumbled on the therapeutic effects of greenery. Joanne and her two teenage sons had moved home, so she purchased the first of many houseplants, researching everything she could about taking care of it in the best possible way. It soon turned into a healthy addiction that reconnected her to nature. Joanne is an autodidact who enjoys self-learning. She has studied many different subjects that interested her but settled with plants. She left a job that she had been at for over ten years, gradually it had made her unhappy as it no longer fit with her soul, with no financial backing she started a gardening business. Her first project was creating a Mediterranean herb garden. After completion, she wrote a care booklet for her customer that contained each herb and its use in the kitchen and for health reasons. This then spurred her onto to create a course so that others could create their own herb garden. As Joanne’s indoor garden flourished, so did her understanding of herself. She began delving further into the psychological and health benefits of plants and nature. Studies confirmed that what she was experiencing first hand improved concentration, lowered blood pressure, and was a reason to get up in the morning. Joanne resonated deeply with the idea of “biophilia” - the innate human connection to nature and realised that her journey wasn’t just about plants but about discovering her own roots in the natural world. She began to think about how she could help others with her knowledge, so she created a book on houseplants that are safe for your cats and dogs. Joanne also attended Farmers' Markets, selling plants to the general public, but due to the winter, this had to stop. She continues to grow plants both indoors and outdoors and has ventured into making open terrariums, which she can only sell face-to-face due to new laws introduced in the UK. So if you wanted to purchase one of her artistic pieces that incorporate shells and healing crystals, you would have to go and meet her in person until she can secure a plant passport to be able to sell her plants. After sorting a cupboard Joanne found an old medical discharge note that stated that her time of serious illness including an ectopic pregnancy(that almost led to death), neurological problems and cancerous cells some ten plus years ago was caused by pesticide poisoning so she began to research all about how gardening could be done in a safe way not using any chemicals, but using plants instead, and this was when she decided to create the membership site. The membership site is very informative about all things plants. She is hoping to create a new website soon that will be able to host a community of people who want to learn or share their plant knowledge and healing journey with others. During the winter months, outdoor gardening in the UK is not a possibility, so she now works part-time within the community. Joanne has a blog that she shares regularly on her social media sites, so you can keep up with her plant and healing journey there. Joanne is a proud member of Plotsspotuk an online community of gardeners where she is known as a triple threat due to her knowledge in gardening, growing food, and houseplants. She is also a Treasurer at her local gardening club and takes up gardening job opportunities whenever they arise. Joanne also volunteers within the local community, making green spaces more beautiful and helping to make nature accessible to everyone. Reflecting on her journey, Joanne often draws parallels between her personal growth and the lifecycle of a plant. Just like a seed, she faced darkness and uncertainty, but with care, patience, and the right conditions, she began to grow towards the light. Plants taught her the process of growth, understanding that it is okay to have seasons of rest and to celebrate even the smallest of victories. Today, Plantlife Joy stands as a testament to Joanne’s transformation and her belief in the magic of plants. Her story is a reminder that healing doesn’t have to come from grand gestures; it can start with something as simple as a beautifully variegated leaf. Joanne continues to inspire others to find their own joy and resilience one plant at a time through her work. - Alex Gede, E-commerce and Social Media Manager, Executive Contributor at Brainz Magazine
Alex Gede came from a family that struggled with health and weight issues. He could see the problems his aunts were having—mobility problems and diabetes. This must have had an impact on him as he grew up not liking food. He would have an apple for breakfast and a small dinner, but nothing more. As a young teenager, he was already 6’3’’ and was dreaming of becoming a model. But his confidence was destroyed by bullies in school calling him names like ‘bones’ because of how skinny he was and only weighing 132 pounds. Also, his family wanted him to go to university to study Engineering or Medicine. He later settled for Accounting and Finance. After university and years working in the Bank, he finally found the courage to start going to the gym. His body transformation in less than a year got the attention of many on social media and ended up being featured on Men’s Health Online. This new found love for working out gave him the confidence he needed to start modelling which has always been his true love. Alex Gede went on to compete in Mr Ideal Nigeria where he won a title and was invited to compete in Mr Africa International 2016 where he came first runner-up. Since then he has worked on many brands and campaigns. His physique naturally moved him into fitness and underwear modelling. After paying so much money on his first e-commerce brand and still didn’t like it, he dedicated his time to studying and learning all about e-commerce and even became a Shopify Partner. He went on to start his gym wear brand. This was how his love for e-commerce started. Unfortunately, the brand was founded with a friend who did not want to have any contact with him when he came out so the brand was dissolved. After working with most of the well-known underwear brands, he realised that comfortable underwear are not very attractive and the good-looking ones that you would like to show off are very uncomfortable. This led him to start working on his designs and learning how to design underwear during the lockdown. The brand was launched in 2021 and has been growing ever seen even being included in two of the biggest underwear subscription and men's grooming boxes. His brand Club Seven Menswear was founded in 2021 and in 2023 won Luxury Men's Underwear Brand of the Year from UK Enterprise Awards 2023. He now spends his time coaching brands, consulting on branding and e-commerce, modelling, and anything he enjoys doing.
