Summer has always been one of my favorite seasons. As a yoga teacher, esthetician, Ayurvedic wellness practitioner, and business owner, summer often brings exciting opportunities: outdoor events, festivals, travel, longer days, and more time spent connecting with my community. Yet, despite loving everything summer has to offer, I've learned that this season can also leave us feeling surprisingly depleted.

Somewhere between packed calendars, rising temperatures, social commitments, and the pressure to make the most of every sunny day, many of us find ourselves exhausted by the very season that was supposed to feel relaxing.
Ayurveda offers a different perspective. Rather than pushing against the season or trying to maintain the same routines year-round, Ayurveda encourages us to live in harmony with nature. When we understand the energetic qualities of each season, we can make small adjustments that support balance rather than burnout.
Summer is ruled by Pitta dosha, the energy of heat, transformation, ambition, and intensity. While Pitta helps us accomplish goals and pursue our passions, too much of it can leave us feeling physically, mentally, and emotionally overheated.
The art of a balanced summer is learning how to enjoy the fire without getting burned.
Understanding Pitta season
In Ayurveda, Pitta is composed of the elements of fire and water. It governs digestion, metabolism, focus, ambition, and transformation within the body and mind. During summer, the external environment naturally increases these fiery qualities.
When Pitta becomes excessive, we may experience irritability or impatience, skin inflammation or breakouts, acid reflux or digestive upset, overheating, difficulty relaxing, increased stress or frustration, burnout and exhaustion, and perfectionistic tendencies.
Many of these symptoms are so common during summer that we rarely recognize them as signs of imbalance. We simply assume we're tired because we're busy. Yet Ayurveda reminds us that balance begins with awareness.
Eating with the season
One of the simplest ways to support wellbeing during summer is by choosing foods that naturally balance heat. Rather than reaching for heavy, greasy meals or relying solely on frozen treats, Ayurveda recommends incorporating cooling, hydrating foods that help regulate both digestion and body temperature.
Some of my favorite summer choices include watermelon, cucumbers, berries, fresh mint, coconut, leafy greens, zucchini, fresh herbs, and sweet seasonal fruits. These foods not only feel refreshing but also provide hydration and nourishment during the hottest months of the year.
Hydration deserves special attention during summer. While drinking enough water is important, Ayurveda teaches that hydration isn't simply about quantity. Electrolyte-rich foods, herbal infusions, and water-rich fruits often provide support that goes beyond plain water alone.
Try infusing water with cucumber, mint, or citrus for a naturally cooling summer beverage.
Moving with intention, not exhaustion
Modern wellness culture often encourages us to push harder, train harder, and do more. Summer can amplify that mindset.
As a yoga teacher, I frequently remind students that movement should support the body, not deplete it. During Pitta season, consider balancing high-intensity activities with practices that cultivate calm and restoration.
Some excellent summer movement options include early morning walks, gentle vinyasa yoga, swimming, yin yoga, breathwork, meditation, and time spent in nature.
The goal isn't to stop moving. The goal is to move in a way that leaves you feeling replenished rather than drained.
Summer skin health from the inside out
As an esthetician, one of the most common misconceptions I encounter is that skincare begins with products. While quality skincare certainly matters, healthy skin is often a reflection of what's happening internally.
The increased heat of summer can contribute to redness, sensitivity, congestion, dehydration, and excess oil production.
Supporting skin health during Pitta season involves a combination of internal and external care. Hydration, adequate sleep, stress management, antioxidant-rich foods, and proper sun protection all play important roles in maintaining healthy skin.
A lightweight, nourishing skincare routine paired with consistent SPF protection can help the skin remain balanced even during the hottest days of the year.
Wellness for the whole family, including our pets
One aspect of wellness that often gets overlooked is the impact seasonal changes have on our pets. As the founder of a pet wellness company and a devoted dog owner, I've learned that our animals experience many of the same environmental stressors that we do.
Summer heat can increase the risk of dehydration, fatigue, and overheating, so simple adjustments can make a significant difference: provide plenty of fresh water, avoid walks during peak heat, check pavement temperatures before heading outdoors, create cool resting spaces, and allow adequate recovery after exercise.
Just as we modify our own routines seasonally, our pets benefit when we do the same for them.
The practice of slowing down
Perhaps the greatest challenge of summer isn't the heat. It's the pace.
Many of us spend the season trying to fit everything in, vacations, events, projects, family gatherings, outdoor activities, and social commitments. In the process, we often lose the very thing we're chasing: presence.
Ayurveda teaches that wellness isn't achieved through perfection. It's cultivated through awareness.
The most balanced summers are rarely the busiest ones. They're the summers where we make space to sit outside with our morning coffee, take an evening walk, watch a sunset, spend time with loved ones, and appreciate the abundance that the season naturally provides.
Sometimes the most healing thing we can do is slow down long enough to enjoy where we are.
Finding your summer rhythm
Summer invites us to embrace joy, connection, adventure, and growth. It also asks us to honor our need for rest, nourishment, and restoration. Balance is not about doing less. It's about doing what supports you most.
As the temperatures rise and life becomes busier, consider asking yourself a simple question:
What would help me feel nourished this season?
The answer may be simpler than you think. A balanced summer isn't created through perfect routines or rigid wellness practices. It's created through small, intentional choices that help us stay connected to ourselves, to nature, and to what truly matters.
Perhaps that is the greatest lesson Ayurveda offers us: wellness isn't something we achieve. It's something we practice, one season at a time.
