Stop Waiting to Be a Leader, Lead From Where You Are Today

Most small-business owners I meet share the same hesitation: “I don’t feel like a real leader.” They think of leadership as some polished title or a perfect plan. Something out there, waiting for them once they’re “ready”.

A blindfolded man in a suit drives a bus, with six concerned passengers. Interior lit by blue and red lights, creating a tense atmosphere.

But let me tell you a secret: leadership isn’t a destination. You’re already doing it, every day.

When you set boundaries around your time, you’re leading. When you clarify a goal for your team, even if it’s messy, you’re leading. When you’re turning up for a meeting on time, you’re leading. When you choose to listen before reacting, you’re leading. Your team is watching you, and these small, ordinary choices are what shape your business culture more than any strategic plan or vision statement could.

Where people trip up is in self-awareness. We underestimate how much influence we already have, and we fail to notice the signals we’re sending. Research suggests only about 15% of people are truly self-aware, meaning most of us don’t see ourselves the way others do. That lack of awareness means we sometimes (too often?) misjudge how others experience us.

That’s why when I work with clients, the first thing we do is get really clear about who they already are as a boss. Not who they think they should be, not who someone else says they should copy, but what they’re already doing, day in and day out. Because until you see it, you can’t develop it.

So, this week, as an exercise to sharpen your awareness muscle, try including those habits:

  1. Reflect daily: Write down one moment you led well and one you could improve. Keep it honest and brief.

  2. Ask for perspective: Invite a team member or peer to tell you, “What did I do this week that helped you most?”

  3. Experiment small: Pick one moment to lead consciously this week, such as asking instead of telling or protecting focus time instead of firefighting.

Leadership is not about stepping into a mythical ‘out there somewhere’ role. It’s about choosing how you show up in the small decisions already in front of you.

Stop waiting to become a leader. You’re already in motion.
