Do you really need a liver cleanse?

Toxins are everywhere in the air we breathe, the food we eat, the water we drink, and even in the everyday products we use. Over time, these environmental and lifestyle toxins can accumulate in the body, particularly in the liver.

Many of the most common toxins linked to illness, inflammation, and chronic disease come from sources we often overlook, including:

  • Heavy metals like mercury and lead

  • Pesticides and herbicides from conventionally grown food

  • Petroleum by-products and chemical fertilizers

  • Air pollution and contaminated water

  • Plastics and hormone-disrupting chemicals

  • Household products like cosmetics, cleaning products, and non-stick cookware

According to the Environmental Literacy Council, prolonged exposure to environmental toxins can contribute to long-term health concerns.

Since everyone is exposed to a unique mix of toxins, the types and amounts stored in the body vary from person to person. Over time, this toxic buildup can slow down liver function, leading to symptoms such as fatigue, skin issues, digestive problems, hormonal imbalances, and more.

Regular liver cleansing can support your liver and help reduce this toxic burden it may even help prevent future health problems.

Benefits of regular liver cleansing

Regular liver cleansing and detoxification can provide a wide range of health benefits, including:

  • Slowing the aging process

  • Helping prevent chronic disease

  • Alleviating existing symptoms

  • Optimizing energy levels and performance

  • Supporting hormone balance and fertility

  • Improving mood and mental clarity

  • Enhancing liver and digestive function

  • Strengthening the immune system

  • Reducing inflammation and pain

Cleansing is key to liver health

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the liver is considered the "commanding general" of the body, performing over 500 vital functions. It is especially critical to women’s health and serves as the body’s primary detoxification organ.

Your liver is your body’s tireless caretaker quietly working behind the scenes to filter, clean, and protect you from the inside out.

You’d be amazed at how many functions rely on a healthy liver. When it’s overloaded or not functioning efficiently, the effects ripple throughout your entire system. With proper support, liver function can improve in just a few weeks, sometimes sooner.

Caring for your liver isn’t just a health protocol it’s an act of self-kindness. When your liver thrives, so do you.

1. Drink lemon, ginger & honey water first thing in the morning

Hydration is key for detoxing. It helps flush out toxins and open up the liver’s detox pathways. When dehydrated, detoxification slows down, making it harder for your body to eliminate harmful substances.

Why it helps for liver detoxification

  • Flushes toxins from the liver after it’s worked overnight.

  • Hydrates the body and supports natural detox.

  • Provides trace minerals and antioxidants to support liver function.

  • Supports adrenal health and energy levels.

  • Lemon in water enhances hydration, helping the body absorb water more effectively.

Lemon water is the perfect way to hydrate, purify, and revitalize your body each morning. It’s rich in vitamins C and B, and provides essential minerals like calcium and magnesium. This simple ritual not only supports hydration and liver detoxification but also benefits digestion, helping relieve issues like constipation and even acid reflux by promoting healthy stomach acid levels. It’s a small daily habit with wide-reaching benefits for liver health.

How to prepare

Squeeze the juice of one fresh lemon into 36 oz of room temperature water. Add 1–3 teaspoons of raw honey and some fresh grated ginger for added anti-inflammatory benefits. If 36 oz feels too much to start, try half the amount and work up gradually.

Pro Tip: Avoid boiling the water or using cooked water, as these are dehydrating. Room-temperature water is ideal for optimal hydration.

Bonus hydration support:

  • Sip lemon water or coconut water throughout the day for extra hydration.

  • Eat raw fruits and vegetables they are naturally hydrating and support liver function.

  • Minimize coffee, cooked food, and alcohol, which can dehydrate the body and put additional strain on the liver.

2. Celery juice – A true hero

Celery juice is incredibly healing and highly recommended. It offers numerous benefits for your liver and overall health, including:

  • One of the most potent anti-inflammatory foods

  • Neutralizes and flushes toxins out of the liver

  • Kills Epstein-Barr, shingles viruses, and Streptococcus bacteria

  • Strengthens hydrochloric acid and bile production, which improves digestion

Why celery juice works

Celery has an incredible ability to improve a variety of health issues. It’s especially powerful for reversing inflammation because it starves the pathogens, including viruses and unproductive bacteria like Epstein-Barr (EBV), that cause it.

Celery also contains mineral salts that act as natural antiseptics. When these powerful salts come into contact with pathogens such as EBV, HHV-6, shingles, and Streptococcus, they break down the pathogens’ cell membranes, eventually killing and destroying them. This is a key reason celery juice is so effective for people with chronic symptoms caused by hidden infections.

Celery juice starves pathogens and strengthens digestion at the same time it’s one of the simplest, yet most powerful healing tools you can add to your routine.

The celery juice movement, popularized by Anthony Williamalso known as the Medical Medium has gained global traction and is now widely endorsed by celebrities and athletes alike, including tennis star Novak Djokovic.

Start simple

You could begin with lemon water each morning and introduce celery juice later. Perhaps reserve it for weekends or less hectic days.

Recommended amount

Start with 4 oz and gradually build up to 16 oz. If you don’t like the taste, try mixing celery with apple and cucumber juice, then slowly reduce the apple and cucumber.

Note that celery juice is far more potent when consumed by itself. For the best cleansing effects, drink it on an empty stomach, about 20 minutes after the lemon water.

3. Avoid or gradually reduce foods that work against you

When it comes to healing, introducing changes gradually is always better. This section is designed as a “work-towards” list, helping you make adjustments at a pace that suits your body’s needs. Many foods that are commonly considered healthy can slow down your healing process. They might feed harmful pathogens, increase inflammation, and stress your liver, especially if your body is already dealing with a high toxic load.

While these foods may seem harmless, reducing or eliminating them gives your liver more space to detox effectively and can help lower viral and bacterial activity in the body. Start slow and introduce these changes gradually, listening to your body as it adjusts.

Foods to reduce or avoid for better health

The following list of foods is based on the teachings of Anthony William, the Medical Medium, who emphasizes that certain foods can feed pathogens and contribute to chronic illness:

  • Eggs• Dairy• Animal products

  • Grains (including corn)

  • Soy

  • Caffeine

  • Chocolate

  • Processed sugars

  • Canola oil (including sunflower oil)

  • Nutritional yeast

  • “Natural flavors” (like hidden MSG)

  • Vinegars (even apple cider vinegar) and fermented foods

  • Citric acid

4. Reduce dietary fat

Animal foods are high in fat, which can put stress on your liver. These fats can slow down liver function, making it harder for the liver to process and eliminate toxins effectively. During the process of cleansing and detoxing, it's essential to support the liver by keeping fat intake to a minimum. For example, a high-fat diet has been linked to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which can impair the liver’s detoxification abilities. (High fat diet-triggered non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: A review of proposed mechanisms).

If you choose to include animal products in your diet, prioritize the following:

  • Best: Wild salmon, halibut

  • Next best: Turkey breast

  • Limit: Lean beef

  • Avoid if possible: Chicken, lamb and pork

5. Eat more raw foods, especially early in the day

Start by incorporating more raw fruits and leafy greens into your meals. If eating raw food feels overwhelming initially, add just a few pieces of fruit daily. Steamed vegetables are also an excellent transitional food for later in the day.

We’ve all heard that fruit is rich in antioxidants, but what does that mean? In simple terms, fruit helps prevent oxidation, a process that accelerates aging. One of the key benefits of fruit is its ability to halt pathogens in their tracks. Many of us unknowingly carry viruses and bacteria that contribute to unexplained symptoms and chronic conditions.

Vitamin C, found abundantly in fruit, is vital for life. We cannot survive without it, and fruit is one of the best sources of this essential nutrient. Vitamin C plays a crucial role in preventing illness and slowing down the aging process.

Fruit isn’t just nutritious it’s one of the most powerful foods we can consume to protect ourselves from chronic illness. Throughout history, fruit has been revered as a healing food. It not only helps prevent illness but also fights pathogens, slows aging, and heals our bodies on a cellular level.

Leafy greens are equally important for healing. They are a critical source of electrolytes and are rich in vitamins A, B, and folic acid, as well as disease-fighting alkaloids and micronutrients that help restore the endocrine system. These powerful foods provide a unique group of nutrients that nourish and support every organ system. Leafy greens offer essential nutrients that are difficult to replace elsewhere in the diet, making them an indispensable part of long-term health and healing.

Incorporating more raw fruits and greens early in the day whether in smoothies, salads, or snacks will provide a steady stream of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support detoxification and overall health.

6. Support your adrenals with healing snacks

In today’s fast-paced world, your adrenal glands are often under constant pressure, especially if you’re dealing with chronic stress, fatigue, or illness. Over time, this can lead to adrenal depletion, resulting in energy crashes, anxiety, and hormonal imbalances.

Maintaining a regular eating schedule is one of the most effective ways to support adrenal recovery.

Here’s how to help your adrenals thrive:

  • Eat small, frequent meals to maintain stable blood sugar levels.

  • Focus on natural glucose from fruit-based snacks such as dates, apples, bananas, or mangoes.

  • Cut back or eliminate stimulants like caffeine and chocolate, as they can put additional stress on your adrenals.

  • Eat every 90 minutes to avoid blood sugar dips and ensure your body receives consistent nourishment.

Final thoughts

Some of this may not sound revolutionary, and some of it may challenge what you’ve heard. So, how do you know what’s right for you?

Try it and see how you feel.

Give yourself 30 days to experiment. Track your energy, mood, digestion, and symptoms. If something doesn’t feel supportive, scale it back. Listen to your body and go at your own pace—sustainable change is the most effective.

This gentle cleanse focuses on:

  • Supporting liver function by opening up detox pathways

  • Calming the adrenals and reducing stress hormones (like cortisol, which is toxic to the liver)

  • Improving hydration—essential for eliminating toxins
