Graham is a serial innovator with a unique, proven record in Football, Education and Performance. Building on his extensive career experience, Graham is collaborating with a global leading neuroscientist, Dr Michael Merzenich, to create footballing brains, a programme of Mentored Brain Training to improve performance, mental strength and resilience.

Few of us ever reach our potential. Fewer still do so at any consistent level. This is a bold statement, but one that I think resonates with many who are working to improve performance in education, business, and sport. These are areas where I have been working for over five decades, and I can think of several outstanding individuals who caused me to feel disappointment at their failure to progress and develop to fulfil the enormous potential that I saw in them.

Silhouette of a head with gears and a brain inside, set against a blue background with light waves and glowing orbs, suggesting thought.

In classrooms, in boardrooms, on the football pitch, whether I have been teaching and mentoring young people, leading businesses, or coaching footballers, one truth remains constant. Performance is governed not just by skill or hard work, but by the brain, its mindset, and the decisions it makes for us. Yet this vital organ, which makes every decision we make and controls every action we take, is often left neglected and untrained.

Taking football as an example, there is a focus on physical fitness, technical development, tactical awareness, and data. But brain health and cognitive function provide the missing link, and it is time they were put front and centre. It is decision-making that separates the very good from the great.

Brain health and cognitive function

So, what do I mean by “brain health and cognitive function”? Just like physical health and fitness, brain health and fitness can be thought of as measured by strength, capacity, flexibility, and performance, but in cognitive terms.

A fit brain consistently pays attention far better, makes better decisions more quickly and more often. It sees more when scanning, processes information more quickly, remains calm under pressure, adapts, and recovers from setbacks faster. It is more resilient.

Our brain performance is not fixed. It is not defined by age, background, or even IQ. It is dynamic and mouldable, thanks to the power of neuroplasticity, the power of the brain to change through experiences.

Here is the most powerful idea of all: brain fitness can be trained. Brain HQ is a globally leading Online brain training programme that is used in the mentored brain training programme of footballing brains. Dr Michael Merzenich of Brain HQ is often referred to as “the Godfather of Neuroplasticity” for his globally leading work.

Introducing mentored brain training

The footballing brains concept has been developed by blending the learning and experience of many years working in education, business, wellness, and sport, and how to maximise performance.

Mentored brain training has been developed after years of research, observation, and collaboration, building on the work undertaken by Dr Michael Merzenich of Brain HQ and the pioneering efforts of my colleague, John Bishop, of the multi award winning social enterprise, Evolve, a Social Impact Company.

The impact of the online brain training of Brain HQ has been scientifically proven by over 300 gold standard research projects. Tom Brady has praised the tools of the Brain HQ programme.

“I am not a brain scientist, but I can tell you about my experience after using Brain HQ. I could feel myself seeing more, seeing things more quickly and accurately, and making better decisions, faster.” – Tom Brady

Evolve’s work has won recognition for its development of mentoring and training programmes. An added contribution has been to bring my football coaching background, as the youngest ever FA Full Badge and Staff Coach back in the 1970s, to the challenge of merging both areas of mentoring and brain training into an easily deliverable programme that can transform the training of players, coaches, and match officials.

It is well documented that online programmes, like gym memberships in January, are enthusiastically entered into but soon discarded. Allocating a personal mentor to those participating in footballing brains ensures engagement for the 12 weeks needed to fully maximise the impact made.

Footballing brains is so much more than just an app. It is far more than a course you buy and forget. It is a structured, personalised, and mentored approach to improving how your brain functions in real life, whether you are leading a company, studying for exams, or playing at elite levels in sport.

Why mentorship? Because change rarely happens in isolation. You need someone to challenge you, support you, and help you see your blind spots. Someone who brings perspective, not just process. A human who cares about your progress.

This method uses the evidence backed cognitive training tools of Brain HQ, but it is the mentoring that makes it stick. We take science, and we apply it where it matters most, to you as an individual.

Too many groups working in this area cannot translate the theory into practice. Others cannot simplify the process to make it readily understandable, thereby causing confusion.

A broader impact: Business, education, and life

But this isn’t just about sport.

In business, leaders face constant decision making under pressure. In education, students must absorb and apply knowledge faster than ever. In life, we are bombarded with information, distraction, and stress.

Your brain is the gatekeeper. It determines how you respond to every challenge and opportunity. So, it should be the first thing we train. It can deliver a very positive mindset.

With Mentored Brain Training, I have seen executives sharpen their strategic thinking. I have seen students improve exam performance. Research shows retirees regain clarity, purpose, and confidence.

This is the universal tool we’ve all been missing as we prepare to make positive decisions about the challenges and opportunities that come our way in life.

Here is what I want you to remember:

Your brain is not a finished product.

It is flexible. It is powerful. With the right training, it can perform at levels you never imagined.

When we do not realise our potential, is it because our training has failed?

So, the question is: Is your brain fit to perform at its best?

And if not—what are you going to do about it?
