You’ve leaped and started your business, now what? In the first 18 months, growth isn’t just about revenue, it’s about building a brand people trust, marketing with clarity, and making sure your message actually reaches the right people. As a marketing and branding coach who works with early-stage entrepreneurs, I know the challenges are real: inconsistent visibility, messaging overwhelm, and the pressure to do everything all at once. But this stage is rich with opportunity. These 6 foundational steps will help you grow your brand and attract aligned clients with intention and confidence.

1. Set clear, aligned brand goals

Forget vague ideas like “grow my brand” or “get more exposure.” What specific marketing outcomes do you want in the next 3, 6, or 12 months? Whether it’s attracting your first 5 ideal clients, growing your email list to 500 subscribers, or positioning yourself as a thought leader, define it. Use SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) that reflect your energy, values, and unique voice.

2. Know who you’re talking to

You don’t need to appeal to everyone. You need to resonate with your people. Who needs your work? What are they struggling with, and how do you solve it? Go beyond surface demographics and understand their values, beliefs, and buying behaviour. When you truly understand your audience, you stop shouting into the void and start speaking with precision.

3. Build a visible, consistent brand presence

You don’t need to be on every platform. But you do need to show up consistently on the ones that matter. Choose 1-2 core platforms and use them to deliver value, show your face, and share your expertise. Your website should be more than pretty, it should position you clearly, speak directly to your audience, and make it easy for them to engage or buy. Prioritise clarity, consistency, and connection.

4. Create a branded client journey

From discovery to delivery, your brand should feel cohesive. From the first time someone lands on your Instagram to the moment they receive your welcome email. Every touchpoint matters. Audit your brand experience. Does your content reflect your expertise? Is your onboarding process seamless and on-brand? Are your emails, visuals, and offers aligned? When your brand experience is intentional, clients trust you faster and stay longer.

5. Commit to learning & evolving

Your brand is a living entity, and so are you. Stay sharp by learning more about copywriting, content strategy, audience psychology, and data. Whether you attend workshops, hire a coach (hi again!), or study marketing trends, keep refining your brand voice and deepening your messaging. A strong brand grows with you, not apart from you.

6. Measure, analyse, and iterate

A plan is only as good as its execution and refinement. How do you know if your consistent brand presence is working, or if your client journey is truly seamless?

The "M" in your SMART goals (Step 1) is where you measure. Identify 3-5 key metrics, for example: website traffic, email sign-up rate, social media engagement, or lead-to-client conversion rate, that you can track monthly. Analyse what worked and what didn't, then adjust your strategy. This continuous feedback loop is what turns initial effort into sustainable growth.

The first 18 months of business are about laying the kind of marketing and branding foundation that makes long-term success inevitable. Not by chasing trends or mimicking others, but by building something that feels true. You don’t need to do it perfectly, you just need to start with purpose.
