At a recent speaking event, I had a conversation with someone who shook his head and said, “I can’t believe January is already over.”

Ponquogue Beach is a stretch of sand accessed by a bridge across Shinnecock Bay.

Curious, I asked, “What do you mean? How was this January any different from all the others you’ve experienced?”

He gave a small, wistful smile and said, “I guess it’s not really different… it just seems to be going by faster.”

I nodded. “It?”

He sighed. “Life.”

I smiled knowingly and said, “Yeah, I get it.” Then I added, “My friend, life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer you get to the end, the faster it goes.”

He laughed and introduced himself as Freddie. We shook hands, and I asked, “Freddie, what do you think about how we treat the new year? What do you think about New Year’s Day?”

He told me he liked the weeks leading up to January 1 because they gave him a chance to focus on what he wanted to accomplish and how he wanted to grow. I nodded. “That’s great. Introspection and self-reflection are key.”

Then I asked, feeling like a lawyer in CSI leading the witness, “But what makes that one day—January 1—so special?”

Freddie looked away for a moment, gathering his thoughts. Then he turned back to me with a victorious smile. “That’s simple. Because on that day, you get a fresh start. You have 364 days ahead to live, love, create, recover… and just get better as a person.”

I grinned and asked, “Freddie, can I give you a hug?”

He chuckled and agreed, so I pulled him in for a quick embrace. As we stepped back, I put my hands on his shoulders and said, “Freddie, January is over. And you know what?”

He raised an eyebrow. “What?”

“Every day you wake up is a new beginning, a fresh start. Another chance to achieve, create, and become a better person… a better you.”

Freddie’s eyes squinted slightly as he took it in, letting the words settle. He took a deep breath, and as I gave him a fist bump, I added, “Tomorrow is February 1… Happy New Year, Freddie. Now go kick some ass.”

He smiled, and so did I as I turned and walked away, leaving my new friend lost in thought, maybe even stoking the fires of inspiration.
