Matilda Wayte

Neuroscientist

Matilda Wayte is a Clinical Exercise Physiologist and Neuroscience Researcher based in Newcastle, NSW, Australia, whose work explores what happens in the brain and body when people experience trauma — and what it takes to heal.
She holds a Bachelor of Clinical Exercise Physiology from Queensland University of Technology, a Graduate Certificate in Neurological Rehabilitation from Edith Cowan University, and a Graduate Certificate in Mental Health and Neuroscience. In her professional life, she works as a Rehabilitation Consultant within the NSW workers' compensation system, coordinating complex return-to-work outcomes across multidisciplinary teams. Her clinical lens spans neurological rehabilitation, mood and personality disorders rooted in early trauma, and the physiological underpinnings of mental health.

What makes Matilda's perspective distinctive is the thread of lived experience woven through her academic and professional work. She doesn't approach trauma as a distant clinical concept — she understands it from the inside. That integration of the personal and the scientific is what drives her to make neuroscience accessible to people who need it most.

Through her platform @theneuro.ep, Matilda creates research-grounded content for a broad public audience — translating emerging science on trauma, brain health, and emotional wellbeing into clear, meaningful language. Her writing for Brainz Magazine continues that mission: bringing rigorous, compassionate neuroscience to readers who are navigating their own paths toward understanding and healing.
