- Rediscover, Reframe & Refocus
Written by: Debra Abraham, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. Entrepreneurship requires the mental strength of an athlete. Mental toughness and resilience will brace entrepreneurs up as they respond to the curveballs thrown at them throughout their entrepreneurial journey. In the life of an entrepreneur, you will experience days of exhilaration; when everything goes according to plan and the success of a project is duly celebrated. Then there are days when setbacks are rife and you need to go back to the drawing board to initiate new business strategies. The most exasperating of days are the ones where you wind up feeling lost, for whatever reason, and you struggle to get back on track, grappling in the dark to find direction and restore balance in your life and business. But why? Why does an entrepreneur go through periods of drifting, thrown about by the currents of doubt, confusion and fear? Finding your direction as a business owner is vital as you are the leader of the pack and the captain of your ship! Without your direction, the morale of your team, the efficacy of business decisions and your business growth will be grossly affected. Hence, it is critical for you as an entrepreneur to address the issues which are hampering your ability to have a sense of direction in your business. Here are 5 steps to help entrepreneurs reframe their thoughts and find direction again. 1. Identify the cause Why do you feel lost? Has your business reached a dead end and you are unsure about what steps to take next? Have there been events in your personal life which have affected your ability to focus? Have there been new developments in your industry which have unnerved you? Identifying the root cause requires profound soul searching. Search yourself & journal your discoveries as you excavate the layers of your emotions & thoughts. 2. Revisit your purpose & business goals When was the last time you sat down and thought about why you started your business? Do you recall the day you made the decision to set up shop? Do you remember the passion and the drive you had to make a difference and offer your unique service or product to the world? Write down your thoughts as the process of putting your down your ideas in written form helps you stay accountable and committed to your plans. In addition to this, reassess your business goals. Analyze and plan out the steps to reach these goals. Include timelines, collaboration partners, and be as detailed as you can. This process will help you to reignite the fire you had as you chart out your journey. 3. Get a mentor/coach Sometimes, entrepreneurs can get stuck in their businesses. Having a second pair of eyes to look at market needs, business processes, blocks that are hampering growth, as well as new business growth strategies, is invaluable. Engaging a coach or having a mentor to guide you as you navigate through your business plans, will help you alleviate some of the anxiety and feelings of insecurity. Choose a coach or mentor who has had experience in growing businesses in your industry. Align your objectives and goals at the beginning and allow yourself to be coachable. A good coach/mentor will help to open your mind to see a new range of possibilities for your business. 4. Be part of a trusted community People say that the journey of an entrepreneur is a lonesome one. Not anymore. With the ubiquitous presence of social media, there are a host of entrepreneur networking and support groups available. Join these groups and identify a few which you resonate best with. Give and enjoy support from the members of these groups. You will make new connections and be inspired by the journeys of others which inadvertently will enrich your entrepreneurial journey. 5. Cut out the noise Too much clutter whether tangible or intangible can affect your mental well-being. Find ways to simplify your business processes. Use technology and automate processes as much as you can. Outsource tasks that can be outsourced so you have more time to plan and work on your business. Restore peace and calm (as much as possible!) in your life & business. Spend some time away from your business and go through these steps. It will invigorate, calm and help you breathe new life into your business. All the best! Follow Rockstarzstudios on Facebook, Instagram and visit Debra's Instagram! Read more from Debra! - The Secret Weapon Of Distraction — 7 Ways To Crush Imposter Syndrome
Written by: Dee Burrowes, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. Who do you think you are? There’s no way you were cut out for this. Could you have gotten through because your manager must not have been paying attention? Are you feeling a wave of self-doubt coming on? If someone threw you these phrases at you might not like to be associated with them anymore, and rightfully so. Imposter emotions portray a conflict between your self-perception and the way others do perceive you. Deep within, there is somehow a feeling of being a total fraud of their achievement, contemplating that it is serendipitous luck. Imposter syndrome, time after time, creeps in with the attainment of success or a personal milestone. Despite being competent in performing the profession, many are riddled with chronic self-doubt, and the state of copycat permeates with a persistent internationalization of being exposed as a fake. Imposter syndrome proclaims itself as an extreme lack of confidence experiencing triumph results in negative self-talk of ‘I am not enough, I am not worthy, or I don't deserve this victory. The majority of people undergo a lack of self-confidence at particular moments in their lives. However, with impostorism, the feeling is round the clock and bitter. Negative emotions exist despite the obvious markers of success, and the internal bars we placed within have us penned into these unsustainable and unrealistic notions of what competency is. This psychological phenomenon exhibits a belief in inadequacy and incompetency regardless of indication that you’re proficient and relatively flourishing. Imposter syndrome can be termed as a reservoir of feelings of insufficiency that goes on, although there is evidence of success. As imposters’ are dealing with deep-rooted self-doubt and awareness of intellectual falsehood, which override any external proof of their competence. In its true sense, most people have experienced these emotions similarly of being underqualified and undeserved. As people commend your expertise and brilliance, you disregard your wins to the right timing, synchronization, and the stroke of luck. It is hard to fathom that you have earned all these accomplishments on your own merits and somehow felt an uneasiness that others will, in the end, realize a similar situation. Thinking back on your greatest achievements ; do you feel proud of what you've accomplished? How far have you come through toiling and persistent dedication? Or are you feeling like a fraud that has been perceived by those who deem it as detrimental to their actual victories and successes? To be of the opinion that you are unworthy of what you have attained professionally and or otherwise that people will see through your pretense will naturally exude an unwarranted layer of pressure to your daily schedule. Such instance could be unnerving, and on reflection, a definitive, inferior type of imposter syndrome could be experienced. Many tend to voice their emotions as if they were playing in a musical and improvising while everyone else knew the words and they don’t. The imposter phenomenon amongst movers and shakers who are unable to internalize and accept their success often attributes their achievements to fate rather than their ability and fear that others will eventually expose them as being a fraud. It is necessary to move past pointing the fingers merely on the person that tends to use the imposter syndrome debacle as a scapegoat as opposed to addressing what in actual fact is the root cause of the imposter experience. Imposter syndrome is not necessarily a disease of the mind but more of a challenge with societal conformity and expectations. If there are feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt, you may be surprised to learn that you are in great company, as impostor Syndrome is commonly associated with high achievers. Feeling like a fraud, the chances are likely that you're very much capable than you actually can fathom. Impostor Syndrome frequently propels at moments of progress, be it personal or professional. The start of a new job, receiving a promotion or award, taking on extra responsibility such as teaching others, starting your own business, or even becoming a first-time parent. Never be too caught up in being afraid to admit you are battling with the symptoms of feeling unworthy. It often shows up as you're not the only one grappling with self-doubt. As a means in the quest of validating your emotions as it constantly manifests as uncertainty whether you’re up to the challenges that you’re confronted with. Self-skepticism often shows up to induce stress, lowered self-confidence, and panic; however, being aware and taking a radical course of action to step away from the negative emotions to harness a new potential giving you the edge you might be looking for. You are not alone, as researchers have found that approximately 70 percent of us feel like an imposter at some point in our life. Let’s face it the remaining 30 percent are probably not telling the truth about the syndrome. The 7 ways below can soften the blow as we learn to skip around being an imposter for it not to hinder our life too drastically. Create a brag sheet Designing a brag sheet will assist in overcoming feelings of inadequacy and inferiority. The brag sheet consists of a list of your accomplishments and accolades thus far in your profession and even outside of your work environment. A brag sheet is comparable to a CV but on steroids and a bit fancy, if you will. The brag sheet will quantify your success, including triumphs in many areas of your life-giving rise to celebrating your achievements, in addition to getting into the habit of writing down your wins that will support you in recognizing them and can stave off any ill feelings being an imposter. Rewrite your emotional roadmap Despite telling yourself they are going to find out you are a fake or not deserving of any form of success – be reminded that no one ever has all the answers. Everyone is learning, growing, no matter how successful you are – being better every day than the previous is their aim. Reframe screw-ups as a learning curve Most are going to fail in the course of their life and career. It might be a giant disaster, or it might be a collection of small mishaps – nonetheless, failure will be a part of the journey. Recognize the lessons in these storylines and use these advantageously moving forward. Overcome Perfectionism Develop habits by taking regular intervals of breaks, incorporating relaxation techniques, mindfulness, and getting more physical exertion in. Learn how to set challenging and achievable goals but also remember that if you don't achieve particular goals, it's not the end of the world. Understanding your strengths and weakness Enhancing your confidence is becoming aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Conduct a personal SWOT analysis in discovering how you perform best and to think about how you can minimize the impact of your weaknesses. Be Open to Getting support Surround yourself with a support network of others who can motivate you and who you can trust to help you counter your negative inner critic. Dealing with imposter syndrome is to resist the temptation to power through it alone to overcome these feelings that we often deny focusing on. Experiencing self-doubt, getting support and encouragement will be valuable, helpful insights and renewed enthusiasm in facing the daunting and overwhelming challenges that do arise. Be Willing to Learn and to Grow Negativity resulting from imposter syndrome can provide some benefit as challenges do promote self-improvement and give insights with high standards and a stronger work ethic. This drives growth and change and, more importantly, maintaining excellent mental health and improving self-esteem and self-worth. It can be proven that imposter syndrome can lead to profound personal growth. For more information, visit my website ! Read more from Dee! - Emotional Wellbeing 101: 5 Effective Steps For Mums Moving Away From Emotional Overwhelm
Written by: Dr. Dunni Atalabi, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise . Are you feeling drained, overwhelmed, or exhausted? Do you feel a torrent of fear, perhaps anger, and even some guilt? These are features of emotional overwhelm. Emotional overwhelm refers to the depletion of our emotional energy and it affects people globally. Our emotions have varying vibrational energy levels. High vibration emotions include love, hope, and enlightenment. While lower vibration emotions include fear, shame, guilt, and grief, which take us through a period of pain and overwhelm leading to us feeling drained. I found myself vibrating at low energy levels a few years ago when I received that dreaded, unexpected phone call in the early hours of the morning, informing me that my father had died. That loss and the grief that ensued was the main cause of emotional drain for me. I was in a state of overwhelm and felt exhausted all the time. This drove me to explore the best resources to enhance my well-being for myself and my children. On that journey, I built my emotional wellbeing toolkit using natural, scientific, and medical practices that I still use now in my many roles, to thrive through challenging times and ensure enhanced energy levels and emotional wellbeing. To serve as a guide, here are 5 steps you can take to move from emotional overwhelm to emotional wellbeing: 1. Acknowledge that there is emotional overwhelm. This is the first and most important step. The moment you admit that you are feeling exhausted, tired, or that your emotional bandwidth is not at the level you want it to be, you are moving away from the emotional overwhelm. Once this is identified just like making a diagnosis, there is clarity. As a doctor, I have noticed that even in situations where there is no active treatment for a condition, being aware of the diagnosis gives some relief to the patient because at that point they know what is happening. This clarity causes a shift 2. Breaking things. This is when you start breaking free, breaking through and breaking up. When you break free , you are able to release yourself from limiting beliefs, expectations of others, negative relationships, and past events that do not serve you. It does require a firm decision and can be painful initially but liberating. Breaking through is a steady process where you exert pressure and persistence to go through a challenge. This is applied to ensure that you are making a mark in your space as you set yourself up for a safe area to grow. It is just like when a plant needs its roots to break through the soil to reach the most important nutrients vital for its growth. Breaking up involves deliberate actions to break up tasks and time. In a 24 hr period, we have many events that take place and as mums, we have a massive to-do list. By breaking up the tasks into actionable steps, makes them more digestible and improves the clarity obtained in the previous step. By breaking up the time into chunks we support our body and mind to harmonize with the natural essence of life. This helps you have breaks to step back and recharge. 3. Ask for help. Remember that when you ask for help, it is not a sign of weakness but a sign of strength. It is an indication that you have better self-awareness. This is a key component of emotional intelligence. The ability to strengthen this practice by consistent action builds your emotional resilience. Asking for help can come in different ways. It can occur when you ask for more time, space, or a listening ear. It can also be when you delegate one or more of the broken down steps in step 2 above. It can also be when you ask for an intervention especially when professional help is needed and sought after. Stigma may stand in the way, especially when you're thinking about mental and emotional illness or conditions. Stigma is a big problem we face in this area of wellbeing. However, by going through the first 2 steps, you would feel empowered to break through the limitations preventing you from standing in your power and taking yourself from emotional overwhelm to emotional wellbeing. There is however one thing to take note of here, you need to be open to receiving help. Give yourself permission to receive the help that is offered to you knowing that not only are you worthy of the help but that you are being generous to the people offering you help by giving them an opportunity to feel good. 4. Make a plan. It was well said by Benjamin Franklin, ‘If you fail to plan, you are planning to fail.’ Everything worth doing requires having a plan of what you want to do, laid out. Whenever we make plans we need to remember the words of Stephen Covey, ‘The key is not to prioritize what is on your schedule but to schedule your priorities.’ The way to do this is to pick about 3 tasks that you have broken down from your to-do list in step 2, the tasks that you have not delegated that would make a difference in your overall goal, and schedule them. Once this is scheduled, you can then move on to the next step. 5. Take action. There is a saying by Martin Luther King Jr. He says, if you can’t fly, then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk, then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward.’ There are some days that you are getting things done, you are flying, and you are making big moves. There are however some days where you are unable to fly, run, walk or even crawl and at that point all you can do is wiggle. In such circumstances, keep wiggling. Taking action is the antidote to any problem that can affect our well-being adversely. - Feeling Overwhelmed By Stress?
Written by: René Luisman, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise Summer, the perfect time to relax. But what if you can't let go of your work to get into a state of rest and relaxation? In this article, I explain how you sometimes generate your own stress, which seven styles you can use to tackle stress, and how personal leadership is needed to stop putting pressure on yourself. Do you feel the pressure of always having to perform? As an entrepreneur, I feel like I'm always on. There is always something to do, the work is never done. From developing a strategy to implementation. From making myself visible to the administrative handling of cases. And then there's the pressure to generate more revenue to keep growing my business. In this, I do not differ from the clients who visit my coaching practice. It seems like everyone is weighed down by the pressure of performing. When I ask them what they want to achieve, there is usually a great longing for inner peace. This feeling of always having to perform is a perfect breeding ground for stress. Stress is caused by an imbalance between effort and relaxation. Basically, stress helps you to activate yourself. Useful in case of imminent danger or to push yourself to the limit when you want to achieve your goals. But when that tension remains unconsciously activated, exhaustion lurks. To continue to function properly, it is therefore necessary to relax, rest and recover on a regular basis. If you do not do this, you might notice this immediately in your body. Headaches, back pain, fatigue, irritability, and poor sleep are signals that can indicate stress. Not daring to say no can have serious consequences for your health We all know that stress can be unhealthy. But how disastrous the consequences can be is perfectly explained by Doctor Gabor Maté in his book 'when the body says no'. If you can't say no to a stress-ruled way of life, your body will eventually do it for you. You become exhausted and are more prone to diseases. Substantiated by scientific studies and countless examples, Maté links stress to serious diseases such as cancer, immune disorders, and Crohn's disease. He describes how stress has a much greater influence on health than other factors such as heredity and lifestyle. If you haven't learned to express your feelings and emotions effectively, it can have serious physical and psychological consequences. What’s your strategy for dealing with stress? Wanting to control or suppress feelings and emotions are two common ways people deal with stress. In total, we distinguish seven strategies, also known as coping styles. Some styles focus on solving the underlying problem, while other styles focus on changing the feelings and emotions that are causing the problem. These seven strategies are: Actively tackle and solve issues Seeking distraction (numbing yourself which even might lead to addiction) Denying or avoiding the problem Seeking social support Passivity (worrying, self-doubt, or self-blame) Expressing emotions (like anger or fear) Reassure yourself (put the situation into perspective) Think back to a situation in which you experienced stress. What is your way of dealing with this? And has this had the desired effect? Which style is most effective? There’s no such thing as the best way to deal with stress. How effective a style usually depends on the context. Sometimes you feel better in the short term, but your approach doesn't solve the problem in the longer term. Taking an active approach and seeking support may seem the most effective but can also cause more stress. When you have no influence on the situation, a more emotion-oriented approach such as seeking distraction can be helpful in processing the situation. Stress management often works best when you can let your emotions in and be able to align your style with your underlying needs. Getting rid of dysfunctional patterns Dealing with stress requires firmness. Knowing what your values are and what you stand for so that you consciously say yes to the things that are important to you. Not knowing your values most likely result in living the values of others. You may be subconsciously loyal to the values of your environment. For example, the urge to control or suppress your emotions is often a reaction to a situation you encountered as a child. You try to live up to what you think others expect of you, even if it means selling yourself short. Saying no may not even cross your mind, or it may feel awkward or even selfish. And to avoid that feeling you fall back on an old familiar pattern. And where this behavior once helped you to survive, it now gets in the way, and you unconsciously create your own stress. What you can do yourself to reduce stress So, regulating your emotions is an important first step in coping with stress. Take the time to feel and examine your emotions regularly. What are they telling you about your needs? The better you can recognize your feelings and emotions, the better you perceive the underlying need and act on it. A second step is to examine your own beliefs. Ask yourself critical questions about your beliefs. Thoughts like “this has to be done now” or “I have to do this myself” is often based on unfounded assumptions. We often impose all kinds of things on ourselves and thereby make ourselves bigger or more important than we are. What happens when you dare to say no more often? What is the effect on you and others if you take less responsibility? And finally, it is important to give sufficient priority to relaxation. Not just with the time left over after all the work is done. But consciously make time for activities that give you energy. Moments when you can recharge. So that you can perform when it really matters. For more info, follow me on Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram and visit my website! Read more from Rene! When I transitioned to Television Sales, I worked at two different rep firms before landing at ABC, where I spent 20 years. I didn’t realize when I walked away from my corporate career that media would be following me. It was my QVC appearance selling the award-winning kitchen gadget that put me in front of the camera for the first time. I was hooked! I realized early in my career reinvention how much I missed media. Media is in my blood. Thankfully, I took all those years of experience to launch my own TV Show. - Writing Your Own Story
Written by: Marnix Pauwels, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. A couple of years ago I started to write like this. This. Just one sentence at a time, followed by a bit of space, a blank line. And then another sentence or word. No paragraphs, no cluster of sentences, no formal formatting. After decades of writing advertising stuff and many, many blogs and columns and articles for magazines, I just let go of the required, obvious structures. Not to be different, but because it just felt good. It felt like me. When I was around my 4th post following this new way of writing, a nice guy who is a Facebook friend commented on the story, saying he quite liked it, but also telling me the formatting was off, and that would eventually work against me. “People are used to a specific organization of words,” he told me, “there are strict rules, and they don’t like it when it’s different from what they know.” And I thought he was right. He was as right as someone who is not interested in following his heart can be, as someone who fiercely adheres to the standard because it’s safe and because it is proven to be what works and what people like. He was as right as his way of thinking allowed. So I thanked him for the comment and his inclination to help me out, but I also told him that this was simply the way I was going to do it because it connected authentically to the energy I feel when I write, and I told him that was way more important to me than keeping up with the standard. So. Fast forward to this year and a few hundred blogs in, and I can tell you I have seen more people who started posting in this specific way. Now that is truly funny to me, and I like it a lot, and it is even quite flattering, but that’s just more of a vanity thing, and not why I am so happy that I kept doing it the way I wanted it to do (in spite of well-meant advice to get back in line). What makes me truly happy is how I feel while doing it. Like momentum has got my back, and I am lovingly filled with inspiration. And that deep, intuitive vibe has led me to a new rule: I only do what feels good. It took me many years of struggle and all kinds of weird shit and embarrassing moments and self-judgment to surrender to that deepest wish, but here I am. I only do what feels good because when it feels good, I know it’s me. The Real Me. Feeling good is what the universe uses to help you find your truest Self. It’s there for a reason. And when you follow the feeling, you will start doing what only you can do. The thing is: everybody likes rebels, but most of us are not interested in the bumpy road that leads to becoming one. We don’t like to feel discomfort, criticism, and judgment, and we hate it when things take time to evolve and grow into something beautiful and special. So if you are in for a stretch of exploring the soul of everything you do and want in life, cultivate some patience, resilience, and a personal vision (even if the vision is nothing more than a felt sense of direction), you have to do what feels good and learn to listen to that feeling, keep it close, make it your best friend. You also have to stop giving a shit about the crowd out there that is trying to get you back in line, their line, mostly. Because this is what people do who make their own rules (and stick to it): they don’t wait for approval of those rules. They do and create and be what feels authentically good. They realize, deep within, that it’s more important to find their voice and speak it than to say things that are safe and universally agreed on. Which to me seems really very boring and uninspiring. Listen: our life, this life, is an amazingly precious, wonderful happening, and if we are lucky enough, we find ways of expressing gratitude for that miracle we get to be a part of for a short while. I don’t mind being a wise-ass, but mostly because I really like to live intuitively, authentically, powerfully, and in flow. It takes time and endurance to find your voice and learn how to use it, and you will have to overcome quite some adversity and anxiety, and criticism. But it’s so fucking worth it! And although it’s probably the road of most resistance: that is also exactly why it’s so valuable, and powerful, and invigorating, and liberating. Resistance is the smell of delayed reward coming closer. And patience is a true superpower. Stay curious, find your voice, don’t go for less, cherish it, and keep speaking it. Let the light inside of you find you, and use you. Before you know it (which is later than you want but quicker than you think), you’ll find people who have been looking for you all their lives. And you will be a rebel in your own respect. Find the good feeling, and keep following it, no matter what. That is my purpose, and I wish it to be yours too. You can totally do it. Just take it one line at a time. Follow me on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Twitter, Youtube, and visit my website for more info! - A Good Message That Spoke On Pain
Written by: Lori Clark, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. I heard a good message that spoke on pain. During the message, the speaker spoke on how pain affects us all, but when we are affected do, we really take the time to heal. That led me to write about healing and why it is important. During the message, the speaker said, “have you healed, or do you go through life with buffers around you.” that was one of the most thought-provoking questions I had heard in a long time. It made me think. How do we know we have healed from a situation? Here are a few questions you can ask yourself to see if you have truly healed. Can you be near or around someone that truly hurt you? Can you talk to them? Does the thought of being near them or speaking to them give you an uneasy feeling? Can you go to a place that holds heavy memories, even if there is something brand new there? Do all the old memories come back, or do you see that particular place for what it currently is? Do you have triggers from certain experiences? Can you honestly say you have forgiven the person or situation? If you answered yes to these questions, you are well on your way to being completely healed. Sometimes when we think we have healed, we really have created defense mechanisms without even realizing it. For example, let’s say a family member hurt you. Now you refuse to attend any family function based on the thought of potentially seeing them. Or let’s say you had a bad experience working in an office setting. Now you feel like all office jobs are the same, so on any new job hunt, you steer clear of office settings. While listening to the message the other day, I realized just how important true healing is. When we are truly healed, we don’t limit ourselves. We are able to embrace painful or hurtful past situations with a new attitude, new confidence, new mindset, and new beginnings. Take a moment and think about what or who you need to heal from. What steps would you take to heal? Would you write a private letter of forgiveness? Will you sit down with a professional life coach or therapist to tweeze out all your emotions? Would you be willing to reconcile differences between you and someone that hurt you? What would your new journey look like once you have gotten to this point? Healing isn’t the easiest thing to admit we need. Nor is it easy to work through. Healing takes a lot of confrontation, strength, and willingness to change. However, the good news is there is no timeframe for healing. For some, it can take a few days or weeks. For others, it may take months. Whatever it takes for you, don’t be ashamed of your healing process. Embrace it and know that there is beauty on the other side. Follow me on Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn and visit my webs ite ! - 5 Steps To A Functional And Stylish Work From Home Wardrobe
Written by: Ana In Style, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. I've been a work-from-home freelancer for more than 15 years, and I've seen and tried a lot, from working in my pajamas to working in my tracksuit, my everyday clothes, loungewear, or my work suit. And none of these are practical when you have at least 7 roles to play. You’re a mom, an entrepreneur, a wife, a cook, a cleaning lady, a friend, a shopper, and these days even a teacher. That is many hats for one person… and so little time. I’ve been following the trend of working from home professionals for several years and what I observed was that they either work in their pajamas, tracksuits, or even underwear, or they put on their complete office attire to make them feel focused and as if they were at the workplace. This is good but not practical. The Hybrid Homewear™ Method I, therefore, created the Hybrid Homewear™ Method. It is a method to dress in a way that allows you to quickly jump from one role into the other. The benefits of the Hybrid Homewear™ Method It saves time. You keep on the basic layer and just add or take away different pieces of clothing, jewelry, and accessories. Adjusting your hair if necessary, and you are good to go. It saves space. You don’t need whole outfits because everything matches with everything. It saves sanity. This reduces decision fatigue because you have a formula, a solid plan, and know exactly how to execute it. It creates opportunities. When you are out and about, so many things can happen. You can meet your dream partner while walking the dog or using public laundry facilities; you can meet new clients or referral partners while shopping and running errands, for example. There is always an opportunity to network. It makes you always look put together. This is an important moment for a woman. It helps us think clearer and feel confident in our own skin as women and as entrepreneurs. It is easier to approach someone and talk to them or be approached by someone if we look put together. One of my clients said it beautifully. Since the Closet Edit with me, people started noticing her, smiling at her, and even approaching to talk to her. The 5 Pillars Hair Makeup Apparel Jewelry Accessories What you need Basic makeup for your brows, eyes, and lips A basic outfit you can either dress up or down 2-3 jewelry and/or accessory pieces The 5 steps to work from home in style 1. Makeup Put on your makeup first thing in the morning and forget about it. For this to work you need good quality makeup and the right technique for your signature style. Once you have this in place, it should not take you more than 2 minutes to put together. 2. Hair Do your hair next. Just make it work for you but don’t let it just hang there. Wash your hair regularly. It is super important to keep a clear head and focus. Get your haircut regularly, style your hair, pin it, whatever you need to make it look presentable, just don’t neglect this part because it will ruin everything you are doing. If you don’t know how to tame your hair, seek professional help from a hairstylist or your personal stylist. 3. Outfit Choose your basic outfit. It needs to be in neutral colors, basic, comfortable, plain, versatile and aligned with your fashion personality as well as your body shape. 4. Additional layers Add additional layers to create a different story for each of your roles. If your basic outfit is like a plain canvas, your additional layers will be like pops of color on a clean slate. These will be your top layers in your accent colors and will level up your basics to create interest and remove the plain, dull, and boring feel to them. Accent colors are colors that make sure your outfit appears interesting and dynamic. Think aprons, kimonos, vests, jackets, cardigans. Make sure they are of proper length, style, and materials so that they function well with your basics. 5. Jewelry Switch jewelry and accessories to dress your outfits up or down. Simple earrings are always handy and make you look put together when you cook, play with your kids, or walk your dog. Add a necklace when you go shopping or while on a Zoom meeting for school or work. Make sure the necklace works with your top to flatter your face and enhance your features. Want to know more? If this sounds interesting to you and you would like to know more about the method as well as everything that has been mentioned in this article, like your best colors, styles, fashion personality, best basic pieces, makeup, hairstyles, jewelry, and accessories specifically for you and your lifestyle, get in touch with me with the code “BRAINZ,” and I will personally investigate your unique situation. - Learning To Say “No” In 4 Easy Steps
Written by: Kamini Wood, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. How often do you do things you don’t want to just because you don’t know how to say “no”? Many of us go along with saying “yes” to other people’s requests all the time. We are either uncomfortable saying “no” because we don’t want to disappoint others or to be seen as impolite or uncooperative. Sometimes we fear possible repercussions. And if you are a teenager, the pressure seems even greater. You want to be liked and accepted, and you don’t want to disappoint your friends, teachers, and parents by saying “no.” But, the ability to say no is probably one of the vital life skills that we all should learn and nurture if we want to set personal boundaries, build healthy relationships and lead happier and healthier lives. Even when you decline an offer or refuse to do someone a favor, you probably accompany it with a list of excuses and all sorts of explanations. However, you need to learn that “no” is a complete sentence that doesn’t require explanation or justification. Learning to Say “No” Learning to say “no” is a great way to create personal boundaries that will allow you to focus on your needs, boost your self-esteem, and concentrate on things that matter to you. When you don’t set boundaries by saying “yes” to everything, you are likely to feel overwhelmed, stressed, and fatigued. Also, saying “yes” to things you don’t want to do might eventually turn you into a people-pleaser who constantly needs approval from others to feel valued and confident. Saying “no” enables you to be more honest and helps you clarify with others what they can expect from you. If you let other people know what you are and what you are not comfortable with, you are less likely to feel hurt and taken advantage of. 1. Priorities Saying “no” without further explanations and excuses is easier when you are clear about your priorities. For example, you will need easier decline an invitation to a party you don’t want to attend if you know that you have to study for an important exam or to go to bed at a decent hour. 2. Inner Voice We all have an inner voice that intuitively tells us whether to do something or not. So, before you answer, take some time to pay attention to how you feel about the request and listen to your intuition. Mindfulness is a great way to practice tuning in your inner voice and paying attention to your feelings and thoughts at the moment. 3. Clear Practice repeating simple “no” calmly but firmly. This will help the other person understand that your “no” is resolute and that their insistence won’t change your answer. Be clear, confident and keep it concise. Saying “no” doesn’t have to be uncomfortable. You can use phrases such as: I have another commitment I am not comfortable with that I don’t feel qualified to do that 4. Solutions Instead of offering a lot of excuses to justify your reasoning, suggest other solutions. For example, offer a timeframe in which you may be able to accept the request or mention other things that you may be able to do to accommodate the person. Say something like Not right now, but I can do it later I know of someone who might be able to help you I cannot assist you with that, but here is what I suggest we do Doing so can strengthen your relationships even when you say “no” – it shows the person who asked that they have been heard and that you respect them. - The Obesity Epidemic — How Did We Get Here?
Written by: Suzy Bessett, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. While we are living in unprecedented times, our nation is also struggling with a massive health crisis; obesity . In my opinion, as a successful Eating Psychology Coach, I believe the obesity issue in this country is dangerous and detrimental to our health, well-being, success, and happiness. I feel strongly that the diet industry has missed the mark, that our government is not doing nearly enough, and that Americans are in a silent struggle that weighs heavily on them, literally and figuratively. It’s the year 1776, and we are breaking free from our British ties. It was a time when food consumption/production was very different. The required calorie consumption for many was approximately 3-4x times the amount needed today. People were riding horses, tending their farms, walking, and physical labor was the norm. The complete absence of processed foods forced the consumption of purity. Meats, vegetables, fruits, and fish were staples. Often, large pots of soups and stews were made. Dinner was consumed around 1:00 PM during work breaks from the fields. ‘Supper’ was optional and, generally, something light. If you have a parent or grandparent from the depression era (1929 to 1939), then you know that they have a specific mindset as it relates to food. Many were at the poverty level, eating anything they could find. The scarcity fueled the need to clean the plate, and food insecurity became a real thing. This mentality was passed down through generations. Many viewed it as an insult if you didn’t clean your plate and believed that there was “no problem food couldn’t fix.” And so, another avenue for overconsumption began. It’s now post-wartime, and we are in the boom of the 1950s. It was a boom for the economy, the suburbs, and the ‘baby boom’. Consumption changed forever in 1954; the year of the Swanson TV dinner. Coming in at 12oz and $1.09, compartmentalized eating was never the same again. It was the catalyst for distracted eating and fewer meals at the table together. It was the age of meatloaf and deviled eggs and likely the time that many started to have digestive and health issues as more food became more processed. Then the low-fat craze hit, and we as eaters began to unravel. While the science of low-fat consumption was discovered in the 1940s, the ideology of the low fat craze began in the 1960s when doctors began prescribing low-fat diets to their high-risk heart patients. The popularity of Twiggy and fashion began to change from a more natural/curvy woman of the ’50s to the waif. The nation began obsessing about its weight and the desire to be thin. Cut to the ’80s when the low-fat craze took on steam. Many Americans adopted this way of eating even when there was little science to prove a good fit for all. Ironically, Americans were gaining weight. The “Obesity epidemic” began, specifically in the United States. We began consuming shakes and supplements, all in the hope of a quick fix. The diet industry began a massive push that suggested, “eat this, not that,” and extreme control would fix the problem. The economy was booming, as was our desire to eat, drink, and be merry. Here we are today with a much clearer understanding of the downside of all of these changes since 300 years ago, but we are still an unhealthy nation. The typical diet is still not working, with 99% of traditional dieters gaining all of their weight back, and usually more, in less than a year. The advent of technology has us sitting, distracted and inactive for hours on end. The compulsive, boredom, and emotional behaviors of Americans of all ages, continue to ravage us physically and mentally. Not to mention, there are still astronomical levels of food insecurity in this country, the cost of healthy foods is just too much for too many, and we are still a nation consuming enormous amounts of processed foods, soda, and sugar. With a proven track record as an Eating Psychology Coach , I believe now more than ever that diets don't work. I’m on a mission to open discussions within the medical community, local government, and even nutritionists to figure out what we are doing wrong. I’ve been recently labeled a ‘disruptor,’ and frankly, I’m proud of that moniker. I’m very aware that going against a Billion dollar industry may upset many. That’s ok. What’s not ok? We all know something is VERY wrong, so what are we going to do about it? “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing again and again and expecting a different result.” It’s time to try a new approach. Obesity is now an epidemic, costing taxpayers more than $200 Billion per year in health-related issues, lost wages, and absenteeism. There are certainly heavier healthy people (reasonable BP, resting heart rates, and possibly even the lack of diabetes), as well as skinny but sickly. The number on the scale does not automatically equate to healthy or sick, with one exception; orthopedically. If someone is 50lbs overweight, they are carrying the equivalent of 200lbs on their joints. If a client is 200lbs overweight, they have the equivalent of 800lbs on their joints. Our knees and hips were never intended to carry that much pressure. Many orthopedic surgeons are beginning to require their patients to lose weight before elective joint replacements for optimum results. I am very happy, actually relieved, that media and fashion have begun to embrace a variety of body shapes and types. I think the world would be a very boring place if we all looked alike and thought alike. That said, Americans are struggling with generational, disordered eating. Coupled with metabolic issues, the fight is real. We must do something about it. Not down the road, not another fad diet, and not after COVID goes away; now. At The Metabolic Connection, LLC. - Are You Experiencing A Wake-Up Call? And What To Do next
Written by: Martina Hrubes-Rios, Executive Contributor Executive Contributors at Brainz Magazine are handpicked and invited to contribute because of their knowledge and valuable insight within their area of expertise. Humanity is currently experiencing collective adversity, and while the usual distractions have been stripped back, we are seemingly finding more time to create awareness around our mental and physical health. Some people are taking this present time in life as a chance for personal development or even spiritual awakening, both much needed for the greater good. How do you know that it is time to wake up, hit the stop button, reassess your direction? The answer is, YOU do already know it! What many people don’t realize, and some do but don’t act on it, is this; Everyone is connected to their inner guidance system and your body is that intelligent to notify you when something is going in an undesired direction for your wellbeing. Humans were not built to live routinary lives. We are built to go on adventures, to be inspired and create, innovate, grow, and expand. Our spirit of creation is being forgotten, and sadly most people are not even aware of it. Part of the process is to learn through experiencing contrast to get clearer on what we really want. So let’s get clear here today. Now ask yourself: What is going on in your life right now? How are you feeling physically and mentally? Get Honest with yourself: what makes you feel good and what drains your energy? What habits and routines have you adopted to balance everyday stressors? Are you waking up with intent and love for life or with apprehension to start your day? If you are struggling and feeling resistance, it Is your inner guidance system telling you to make some healthier choices for yourself. Which choices depend on the individual as to what is needed and often involve the healing of all three - Body, Mind and Spirit. Is it time for your Wake-Up Call? Are you currently experiencing any of the following symptoms or emotions? Anxiety Depression Feeling overwhelmed Fatigue Feeling stuck in life with no clear direction Lost in your life roles, a sense of “losing yourself”? Lack of motivation and energy Obsessive worry Looking for Meaning in Life When you are feeling stressed, you may not eat healthy foods and this can cause gut inflammation, which can affect your brain health and fuel your anxiety even more. So, everything we do impacts our overall health. Is it time to break those cycles? Often, we must encounter pain before we are prepared to make necessary changes, so be grateful for those warning signs, and let yourself be guided onto a healthier path. When your body gets affected, in most cases, there is an emotional root cause associated and the above-listed symptoms are cry-outs for help. So, where to begin if you hit that breaking point? Start with these 3 simple steps. STEP 1 Practice AWARNESS in all areas of your life. All personal development starts with awareness, so start practicing. One way to do so is by taking note of your limiting thought patterns – “your inner critic,” and noticing what triggered a specific emotion or reaction? By knowing more about how our mind operates, we can start taking control of our thoughts and emotions and reframe them by changing our perspective. Activity: And if you want to do some deeper self-reflection work, make time in the evening before bed to journal about a specific trigger, thought, or event. STEP 2 UNSTUCK YOURSELF and Start turning your attention towards what you want instead of what you don’t want. “Energy Flows were Focus goes. Forget about the stories of the past and don’t look at what you don’t have just focus on what could be. In other words, I want you to Switch from Fight and Flight Mode into Creation mode. Create “space” in your day for daydreaming, what is that fills your heart with joy, what is it that you miss so you can live a more fulfilling life? Activity: Let your spirit dance! Get out of your mind and connect to your heart by doing something creative, whatever your heart desires. My top 3 ways of creating space are: cardio exercise, a swim in the ocean, listening to music. STEP 3. BECOME MORE PRESENT and integrate Mindfulness practice into your everyday life. These following adjustments will make a long-lasting impact if you commit to everyday practice. Over time you will develop and explore your own mindfulness strategies. Meditation, Yoga, Breathwork, Listening to Music, or sitting outside and taking in the sounds of your surroundings, all of it is mindfulness practice, and it helps to bring back your attention to the present moment. Activity: start with integrating mindfulness into your daily routines. Here are some examples of how to get started. Evening: When you are going to bed, practice gratitude, pick one thing that you are grateful for the day. This will help you to raise your positive vibrations. Morning: first 30 min, Stay away from News and phones and start your day with music and setting an intention about how you want the day to feel and what outcomes you want. These little adjustments alone, will make a long-lasting impact if you commit to everyday practice and over time, you will develop and expand your own mindfulness strategies. The goal of the above steps is to silent your mind and reconnect you with your heart centre, so you can surrender and trust the process of living a healthier and balanced life. You have the right to experience how to live in flow, and that is such a better way of living,…much easier and joyful. Join Martina's Facebook group and follow her on Facebook, Instagram, Linkedin.
