There are many reasons one should consider going to therapy. But “you should go to therapy” is not one of them. When someone suggests that a friend or loved one "should" consider therapy, it often carries a tone of judgment, further fuelling the prevailing stigma surrounding psychotherapy. All too frequently, heated arguments conclude with the admonishing declaration, "You should go to therapy!" Essentially, this sentiment translates to, "There’s something missing here, and you should seek professional help to rectify it."

Sun rays coming through trees

Yet, it is paramount to recognize that the most favorable therapeutic outcomes emerge when individuals willingly embark on this journey, driven by an authentic desire to learn, grow, and heal, as they invest in their growth and resilience. The distinction lies in choosing therapy as a proactive step toward self-improvement, rather than succumbing to external pressure. So why should we embrace the healing and growing power of therapy? Whether it's the relentless pulse of your career or the complexities of your personal life, modernity offers a buffet of stressors. In a culture of constant connectivity and perpetual motion, even the grounded among us can feel unmoored, and there’s nothing to be ashamed of…in case we forgot to mention that.

A journey of betterment

Within the realm of therapy, a notable shift is underway—a trend involving individuals seeking therapy not exclusively to address specific problems but to embark on a journey of self-improvement and self-actualization. These forward-thinkers understand that therapy extends beyond crisis management: It is a powerful instrument for discovering one's potential and evolving into one's optimal self. This introspective journey unearths barriers that impede progress and growth, fostering a mindset of perpetual development, allowing individuals to transcend their limitations and become the best version of themselves.

Strategic coping mechanisms

Therapy fosters stress management, emotional intelligence and strategic coping mechanisms, by taking into account one’s insecurities and past experiences. It equips clients with skills to handle stress, make informed decisions and effectively manage conflicts, ultimately enhancing their ability to navigate complex challenges whilst maintaining their well-being and productivity.

Processing trauma to make space

Processing traumasis a vital component in self-growth, as it frees individuals from the emotional burdens that often have hindered on their personal growth. By processing trauma-related issues, therapy helps redirect energy and attention towards betterment and self-actualization. As a newfound emotional freedom unleashes, individuals embark on a transformative path towards becoming their best selves.

Crossing life transitions

Navigating transitions demands adaptability, patience, and self-compassion. A therapeutic space provides invaluable insights, tools, and strategies to navigate these journeys with newfound resilience. By learning to embrace and nurture the changes, individuals keep their intentions and mission in sight, whilst allowing for new emotions to take place.

And how can we get on this journey?

Dr. Nicole Nasr is the founder of Journey, a matching platform between clients and practitioners. After qualifying as a psychologist, she began her career working for two practices, but as time went on, yearned for greater flexibility and autonomy. She turned to Instagram which brought her 36 clients in just nine months, but soon discovered that filming herself, managing her account, and creating content was overwhelming and didn't align with her passion. Driven by the belief that she couldn't be the only one facing these hurdles, the concept of Journey was born. Dr. Nicole envisioned a platform that would free practitioners from the burdens of self-advertising, so they could wholeheartedly focus on their clients.
