It goes without saying that leadership is tested during challenging times, and it's during periods of uncertainty and adversity like we’re in at the moment that true leaders get to really shine. Whether it's a global crisis, a corporate downturn, or a personal struggle of some kind, effective leaders are those who are able to guide themselves and others with a calm manner, an abundance of empathy, and a collaborative approach to assessing options and solving problems.

I was reminded of the key qualities that make the difference between good and great leaders through working with Carrie Benedet and the leaders she brought together to produce the best-selling book “Global Matters: Inspirational stories from leaders influencing the future of culture, business and education”.

In this article, I touch on the qualities that enable leaders to inspire and empower their teams to rise to the occasion time and time again.

1. Adaptability and flexibility

Especially when conditions are sub optimal, leaders must be open to change and willing to pivot when necessary. In a rapidly changing world, flexibility and adaptability are qualities that enable leaders to effectively assess the situation, make necessary adjustments, and lead their teams in a new direction that is better suited to the conditions at hand than the status quo.

2. Clear communication

Leaders must be open and transparent when it comes to the communication they engage in around challenges the organisation is facing at any given time. Providing regular updates on the progress being made and maintaining a collaborative environment will not only ensure that everyone is on the same page, it will also build that critical ingredient that successful teams need called trust. Furthermore, leaders who are open to feedback and encourage team members to share their concerns and ideas are the ones who are going to continue to be in high demand moving forward.

3. Empathy and compassion

A compassionate leader is approachable and offers support to team members who may be struggling. Leaders who consistently show empathy and compassion are more likely to gain the loyalty and support of their teams in the face of adverse conditions. Understanding and acknowledging the emotional toll uncertainty can take on individuals is critical to building and maintaining strong, resilient teams.

4. Leading by example

When team members see their leader working hard, staying positive, and demonstrating resilience, it motivates them to model that behaviour themselves. It goes without saying that leaders must consistently maintain high standards around integrity and ethical behaviour, and be seen to be open and honest in the handling of ethical dilemmas that are likely to arise.

5. Strategic thinking

Leaders need to think strategically and plan for the long term. Instead of making impulsive decisions, they need to thoroughly assess the situation, consider the potential consequences of the options at hand, and make decisions that are aligned with the organisation's goals and values.

6. Demonstrating resilience

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from adversity. It's a quality that leaders and their teams need more than ever in times of uncertainty. Leaders can help build resilience within their teams by providing emotional support when required, fostering a culture of learning from failures, and coaching their staff to maintain the perspective of a growth mindset.

7. Engendering an environment of trust

Leaders should maintain a culture of trust where team members feel valued and have pride in the work they do. Delegating responsibilities and giving team members autonomy to make decisions can boost morale and motivation, and increase opportunities for professional development.

Conclusion

Leadership through challenging times is not about avoiding adversity. It is about navigating it with skill, grit and grace. Effective leaders show empathy, lead by example, think strategically, build resilience, and empower their teams to engage in problem-solving collaboratively. These principles are not only essential for overcoming adversity but also for fostering a culture of growth and innovation that can lead to long-term success. In the end, it is during challenging times that emerging leaders get to establish themselves, and established leaders get to shine ever brighter than usual as they leave a lasting positive legacy.
