Root Cause Healing vs. Symptoms Management and Why We’re Treating the Wrong Problem

Cynthia Blancaflor is an anti-inflammation and lifestyle medicine expert helping people 35 and up, who are done managing symptoms and ready to heal inflammation and gut issues at the root. Cynthia healed herself of sciatica in just 2 weeks over 18 years ago & has stayed well since, now guiding others to use food as medicine with her lifestyle program "Self-Care Blueprint."

Your body was designed to heal itself. So why are 3 in 4 Americans still sick? What if the real problem is not health itself, but the way we treat illness? At 30, I developed acute sciatica. I was told it was a chronic condition to be managed with drugs or surgery. I was prescribed a drug that gave me headaches and stomach aches. When I told the doctor, she gave me another one.

Woman in a lavender shirt drinks a green smoothie in a bright gym, with exercise equipment blurred in the background.

I had seen this cycle before. Growing up, I watched my parents and my sister take a host of medications that never cured their illnesses: diabetes and heart disease. Those diseases stayed with them for life and ultimately took their lives.

So, at my wit’s end with a doctor whose only solution was a prescription, I said no. As an adult living in the Bay Area, I already believed in natural medicine. I had healed allergies and GERD at the root with herbs and dietary changes, so I believed this time would be no different.

That’s when I met my teacher, Master Wang, a master of Chinese Tibetan medicine. He introduced me to the term allopathy, which is often used to describe conventional medicine. It gave a name to what I had witnessed in my family my whole life. Master Wang led me on my first plant-based detox, during which I released almost ten pounds of food. Within two weeks, the sciatic pain was gone.

Eighteen years later, it has never returned because I changed my lifestyle, including how I ate and the anti-inflammatory diet I adopted.

The root problem we keep missing

What happened in my family is happening across this country. Today, 3 in 4 American adults live with at least one chronic condition, and 7 in 10 deaths are due to chronic diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.

Conventional medicine relies heavily on drugs to manage symptoms. It rarely addresses the underlying cause of illness, which helps explain why more Americans are sick than well.

Conventional medicine is essential for acute and emergency care, but it was never designed to teach the body to heal itself.

In addition, nearly 75% of the U.S. food supply is estimated to be ultra-processed (Johns Hopkins, 2025). Popular culture promotes and sells the very processed foods that cause chronic illness, so where can people turn to get healthy?

According to the CDC, many preventable chronic diseases are linked to risk factors such as tobacco use, poor nutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, and excessive alcohol use. The National Academy of Medicine says genes are not an unchangeable destiny for most conditions. Family history may increase susceptibility, but how we eat largely influences whether we stay well or get sick. I know this from experience, as I avoided diabetes, which my mother, sister, many of my mother’s sisters, and their mother died from.

Medical error and adverse drug reactions are the third leading cause of death in the U.S. (Johns Hopkins).

We are not losing the health battle because we lack access to care. We are losing it because we keep treating symptoms instead of root causes.

What happens when you treat the root cause

This is my life’s work now: leading people with years, sometimes decades, of illness to resolve the root causes in weeks or months using food as medicine.

Dr. Lisa came to me with six chronic conditions: ulcerative colitis, eczema, asthma, allergies, high blood pressure, and endometriosis. She had had asthma and eczema since birth and had access to every specialist and medication available. None of it healed her at the root.

In eight weeks on the Self-Care Blueprint™ Anti-Inflammation program, all six conditions significantly improved. She reduced her blood pressure medication by half and was no longer dependent on her asthma and allergy medication. The eczema and asthma she’d had since birth were undetectable. Her skin was vibrant, and she lost 16 pounds.

When we heal the gut, my clients across the board experience Root Cause Multi-Nodal Healing™, where every system starts to reboot.

Her lab work showed that her inflammation had decreased. Her calprotectin, a gut inflammation marker used to monitor colitis, dropped from 310 to 42 μg/g. After five months of consistent use of her custom Self-Care Blueprint™, my anti-inflammatory lifestyle program, her results were back within the normal range. Her colitis has not returned since. In her words: “I am forever grateful for all that she has taught me, so that I can continue to be my own healer.”

Today, Dr. Lisa is a globetrotter, exploring new places almost every weekend and holiday with her new level of health freedom. Dr. Lisa’s results are not the exception.

Angela, 46: Entrepreneur

Angela loved the idea of food as medicine but didn’t know how it worked. She was pushing through a back injury, rising blood pressure and blood sugar, acne, and afternoons that ended in a nap because her body needed one.

In eight weeks on my Self-Care Blueprint™ Anti-Inflammation program, her back injury resolved, she lost 15 pounds, her blood pressure and blood sugar came down, and her acne cleared. She no longer needs afternoon naps. She and her husband now eat with intention and spend their reclaimed time outdoors together. It’s a lifestyle they’ve kept long after the program ended.

In her words: “Cynthia doesn’t just give you a protocol. She helps you understand your body in a completely new way. That knowledge stays with you forever.”

Nick, 38: Photographer

Nick lived with back pain for more than two years after an injury. He said, “With Cynthia’s guidance, within one month of eating alkaline, hydrating, meditating and adding light daily movement, my pain was down 80%.” Today, he’s back to playing soccer.

Janoffery, 52: Flight attendant

When Janoffery tore his first shoulder, he went the conventional route: surgery and a year of rehab. When the other shoulder tore, he chose the Self-Care Blueprint™ instead. He reported muscle regeneration, avoided surgery entirely, and went on to become a prized bodybuilder.

Janoffery said, “Working with Cynthia was absolutely amazing! My goal was to heal my torn shoulder from the inside by doing the cleanse and also to get rid of inflammation in my body. I accomplished my goals. My skin cleared up, even my sleep became deeper and longer.”

When we address interconnected systems instead of isolated symptoms, improvement happens across all systems of health, upgrading your lifestyle and mindset, which is priceless.

Your lifestyle is medicine

A 2026 study in Frontiers found that fewer than 5% of people reverse diabetes with conventional medicine alone. Ultimately, our lifestyle is medicine, and each habit is either feeding wellness or illness.

This is why I created the Self-Care Blueprint™, a four-step path to wellness that improves lifestyle habits to heal root causes of illness. The four steps are Restore (detox), Rebuild (food), Rebalance (mindset), and Regenerate (movement).

Root causes are not mysteries. Chronic inflammation. Toxin overload. Poor gut health. Acidosis. Dehydration. Chronic stress. Nutrient deficiencies.

These are addressable with food, lifestyle, and the right guidance. With my deep gut detox method and daily movement, my clients have documented outcomes reversing autoimmune conditions, chronic pain, and injury in just months.

The system was not designed to fix you, only to manage your symptoms. But your body was designed to heal itself when given the right conditions and guidance.
