We've all heard it countless times. Believe in yourself, and everything will be fine. Believe in yourself, and you will do well. Believe in yourself, and you will overcome difficult times. But what does believing in yourself actually mean? And, more importantly, how do we do it?

A child in a bright orange outfit joyfully runs down a path through a lush green field, with another orange-clad figure in the background.

During one of my talks, someone in the audience hesitantly asked this very question. What an amazing question! I wish believing in ourselves was as simple as opening a bottle, taking a sip, and boom! In five minutes, it kicks in, and we have unshakable self-belief for the rest of our lives.

If only it were that easy.

From the moment we are born, we struggle for survival, fighting against all odds. Observe a baby flailing their arms and legs, exploring everything within reach. They pick things off the ground, pop them into their mouths, and unknowingly battle an army of germs. Sometimes, they win; sometimes, the germs give them a tough time. But do they stop? No.

They fall a million times. They get up a million times. They learn to walk. Then run. Their chubby cheeks survive endless pinches and playful tugs. They bump their heads while reaching for toys. They giggle, cry, stumble, and get back up without hesitation, without fear.

Why? Because at that stage, we all instinctively believe in ourselves.

We don’t worry about what others think. We are laser-focused on that one lollipop calling our name. No doubts. No fears. Just determination.

Then life happens.

We enter school, an exciting new world full of curiosity. A few tight hugs, kisses from mom and dad, a yummy tiffin, and off we go, ready to explore. But as we grow, the voices around us grow louder. Their words creep from our ears into our minds, whispering doubts, feeding fears, shaking our belief in ourselves.

So what is believing in yourself?

It’s not about never falling. It’s about knowing deep down that you will be fine no matter what the situation is. That you will figure things out, just as you always have.

Think about it: You’ve been doing it since you were a baby.

The only difference? Back then, you never questioned yourself.

Now, it’s time to unlearn doubt and return to that fearless, relentless, unstoppable version of yourself. The one who fell got up and kept going without a second thought. The one who didn’t worry about judgment. The one who simply believed.
