Summer can conjure memories of mixed feelings, experiences and hopes, making us feel as changeable as the bright summer. However, as we get older, we can get stuck in a version of adulting where we are overly serious, rushing around, caught in a whirlwind of routines and responsibilities. Yet, life is too short not to be silly, laugh, and have fun to be you. By stepping back and reconnecting with a younger part of ourselves that has been tucked away, we can rediscover a sense of wonder, joy, and even vitality. Maybe it's time to put away the to-do list, cross through the plans, and permit ourselves to be a little spontaneous and playful, try something new or revisit past passions. You never know; you might just have some fun!

Embrace your inner child

The "inner child" concept can be a helpful way of thinking about this; the earlier part of ourselves embodies our natural capacity for wonder, creativity, and playfulness that we learn to put away. Engaging with this part of ourselves allows us to see the world as we once did or wished we had been allowed to, full of curiosity and excitement. This playful perspective isn't just fun; it's crucial for our mental and emotional well-being.

The surprising benefits of play

Engaging in playful activities has been shown to have numerous benefits, including extending how long we live. Numerous studies show that people with a playful and positive outlook on life tend to live longer and healthier lives; this is because playfulness can significantly reduce stress. Also, playfulness has been shown to enhance brain function, spark creativity, and strengthen relationships. These benefits are not just about feeling good in the moment—they contribute to a more fulfilling and potentially longer life.

So, how do you actually reconnect with your inner child?

  1. Think back to the activities that once brought you joy, whether it was drawing, riding a bike, or playing an instrument. Reengaging in these hobbies can reignite that spark of joy and passion.

  2. Get Outside: Nature offers endless opportunities for fun and adventure. Go for a hike, have a picnic, swim in a lake, or simply enjoy a walk in the park. The outdoors is the perfect playground for your inner child.

  3. Unplug and Be Present: In a world full of screens, hard as it may be, step away, put the phone or tablet down – take time to disconnect. Engage in activities that require your full attention and presence, allowing you to fully experience the moment and show those you love your are present with them.

  4. Allow yourself to be creative without worrying about the outcome. The process can be incredibly satisfying; whether it’s painting, crafting, or building something, my dancing stick men represent my proudest artist moments!

  5. Share the Fun with Others: Organize fun activities with friends and family, such as game nights, day trips, or drawing contests with your children. Shared experiences not only enhance your own enjoyment but also deepen your relationships.

  6. Be in the moment without judgment. Simply go for a walk, listen to music, draw, read, and much more, just for the pleasure of it and not for any end result or purpose. Enjoy life's simple pleasures, reduce stress, and enhance your overall happiness.

This summer, rejuvenate your spirit and enhance your well-being. Take a break from the hustle and bustle of adult life. Take a breath, put adulting aside for a few moments, and reconnect with your inner child. When we are playful, our brains release endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. These endorphins can improve our mood, boost our overall outlook, and potentially extend our lifespan. So, embrace the fun, be spontaneous, and let your inner child out, whether under the summer sun or amidst summer rain.
