Adam Lussey, Youth Mental Performance Coach

Who is Adam Lussey?

I’m Adam, founder and head coach of AJL Consultancy, and I work as a Youth Mental Performance Coach supporting young athletes to build confidence, resilience, and consistency in both sport and life.

I have always been fascinated by what I once believed was an innate personality trait of elite performers - their ability to remain mentally strong and consistently perform at their best under pressure. That curiosity led me into the field of Sport Psychology, where I quickly discovered that this “elite mindset” is not something people are born with. It is a skillset that can be taught, learned, and refined through deliberate practice and the consistent development of high-level mental skills.

In business, I am driven, detail-focused, and deeply committed to developing the clients I work with, not only as athletes, but as confident, well-rounded young people. Outside of work, I am very family-oriented and have had some of the happiest and most fulfilling moments of my life over the past 15 months watching my daughter, Isla, experience her many “firsts.”

When I’m lucky enough to find time within a busy work-life schedule, you’ll usually find me playing golf - releasing life’s stresses while managing to add a few new ones out on the course!

What problem do you most often help your clients solve, and why does it matter so much right now?

One of the joys of my work is that no two athletes are ever the same. Every young person I support arrives with their own personality, unique sporting pressures, personal challenges, and individual goals. This means that every coaching journey is different and requires a tailored, thoughtful approach. Despite these individual differences, there are several key mental challenges that are becoming increasingly common in youth sport today.

One of the most significant issues facing young athletes is learning how to cope with the intense pressure associated with pursuing professional sport. Statistically, progressing to a professional level in any sport is one of the most demanding and difficult career paths a young person can choose. Many athletes are regularly reminded of this by family members, teachers, peers, and the wider sporting environment. When this external pressure is combined with high personal expectations, it can quickly become overwhelming.

Social media comparison, constant competition for selection, fear of being dropped, and anxiety around making mistakes all contribute to a growing culture of self-doubt and fear of failure. These factors can merge to create a toxic combination of performance anxiety, stress, and emotional exhaustion. In many cases, young athletes possess strong physical and technical ability, yet struggle to perform consistently because they are mentally overloaded.

This is more important now than ever before. Across youth sport, we are seeing rising levels of anxiety, burnout, loss of confidence, and reduced enjoyment. When mindset skills are not developed early, these challenges often persist and grow, limiting long-term progress and, in some cases, leading talented young people to leave sport altogether.

My role as a coach and mentor is to guide young athletes through both the highs and the inevitable lows of their sporting journey. I work with them to develop practical mental skills that allow them to manage pressure, control emotions, and respond positively to setbacks. Most importantly, I help them build a healthy relationship with their sport - one that supports growth, resilience, and sustained enjoyment.

By equipping youth athletes with the right mindset tools early, they are better prepared not only to perform at their best, but to navigate the wider challenges of sport and life with confidence, balance, and perspective.

How would you clearly describe what AJL Consultancy does and who it is best suited for?

The purpose of AJL Consultancy is to empower youth athletes with the mindset, resilience, and confidence needed to not only improve their sporting performance, but also develop valuable life skills that support their growth beyond their sport.

By working closely with each athlete and their families, I apply practical, age-appropriate strategies that improve confidence, focus, emotional control, resilience, and overall well-being, allowing youth athletes to perform consistently and truly enjoy their sport without stress, pressure, or fear of failure.

At AJL Consultancy, I deliver industry-leading, bespoke online coaching programmes for athletes and families who view mental performance coaching as a vital part of long-term development. My approach is designed for those who prioritise lasting growth over short-term results and are committed to building strong foundations for success in both sport and life. I often provide ongoing mentorship and support throughout the entire youth sporting journey, working closely with parents and athletes to ensure consistent guidance as they develop.

What first sparked your decision to start your own consultancy instead of staying on a traditional career path?

During my educational pathway, I quickly became aware of a significant gap in support for youth athletes. While completing my Master’s dissertation on the psychological support for players in football clubs and academies, it became clear that much of this support was either delivered in large group sessions, provided by staff who were not fully qualified in the area, or, in the majority of cases, simply not available at all, particularly at lower levels of the club structure.

Fast forward ten years, and while the provision of Sport Psychology support has improved significantly, it is still often limited to just one or two staff members within an academy. These individuals are tasked with supporting hundreds of players, parents, and coaches. Under such circumstances, it is extremely challenging, if not impossible, to provide truly personalised and consistent mental performance coaching for every individual player. This was the catalyst for me stepping away from the traditional route of employed work in the industry and launching my own consultancy.

I wanted to build a space where mental performance work is proactive, personalised, and fully integrated into an athlete’s development, rather than treated as an afterthought or box-ticking exercise. By operating independently from traditional club structures, I am able to offer a confidential, open environment where athletes can explore their challenges, discuss pressures, and develop their mental skills without concern that coaches or club staff will be involved.

This approach not only allows athletes to work on the psychological side of their game in a safe, focused space, but it also provides parents with reassurance and confidence that their child is receiving high-quality, dedicated support.

What do clients usually come to you feeling stuck or frustrated about?

Most clients come to me feeling frustrated that they “know they’re capable of more” but can’t show it consistently.

Common issues include:

  • Losing confidence after mistakes

  • Overthinking during competition

  • Fear of failure

  • Inconsistent performances

  • Anxiety before events

  • Loss of enjoyment

They often feel stuck in a cycle they don’t know how to break.

However, my coaching isn’t just about addressing challenges - it’s also a preventative, proactive approach. It’s becoming increasingly recognised that to succeed in sport, an athlete’s mental game needs to be just as developed as their physical and technical skills. For this reason, many parents and athletes come to me not because there is a “problem”, but because they see mental performance coaching as an opportunity to get ahead. It provides a competitive edge, helping young athletes develop the mindset, resilience, and focus that the majority of their peers aren’t actively training, allowing them to master their mental game and develop an elite-level mentality.

How does your approach differ from others offering similar services in your field?

My approach is deeply personalised and relationship-driven. I combine academic knowledge in Sport Psychology with over 20 years of real-world elite sport experience.

I also work closely with families, not just athletes, and focus on practical tools that can be used immediately - not just theory.

Most importantly, I don’t offer generic, rinse-and-repeat programmes. Everything is designed and fully tailored around each individual athlete to create what I believe are truly the most bespoke, holistic, and thorough mental performance programmes for youth athletes available on the market.

What transformation do clients typically experience after working with you?

For this question, I’ll let some of my client’s past and present do the talking:

  • “Adam has changed my mentality completely and has improved both my self-esteem and confidence.”

  • “I now have a much more positive mindset throughout every aspect of my life, not just my sport.”

  • “I can’t recommend Adam highly enough - he is top class!”

  • “My daughter has developed a resilience and awareness which has enabled her to be calmer and more confident in herself. The mentality Adam has created with her has sharpened her focus, improved her ability to remain calm and composed during competitions. I can’t recommend Adam highly enough to all parents of youth athletes.”

  • “I am feeling better than ever both physically and mentally.”

  • “Adam’s help has been pivotal to me stepping up to international level.”

  • “Adam has a warm and supportive manner. He has built up a fantastic relationship with my daughter, which has created a safe and encouraging space for her to learn and express her thoughts and feelings.”

How do you tailor your work to each client rather than using a one-size-fits-all solution?

Every athlete I work with begins with a comprehensive assessment of their mindset, personality, goals, and environment. This helps me understand not only their current strengths and areas for development, but also the pressures they face both in and out of sport. From this foundation, I design a fully personalised development plan that addresses their unique needs and aspirations.

Each session is deliberately tailored and adjusted based on ongoing progress, real-time feedback, and any changes in circumstances or challenges. This ensures that the approach remains relevant, effective, and responsive. No two programmes are ever the same - every athlete receives a bespoke combination of tools, strategies, and guidance designed to help them grow, perform consistently, and build resilience both in sport and in life.

What should someone expect from the first conversation or consultation with you?

My free introduction call is relaxed, engaging, and entirely focused on getting to know the athlete as a whole person. It’s an opportunity to explore not only their sporting journey, mindset, and goals, but also to introduce my approach to mental performance coaching and how it can support them in a variety of areas.

There’s no pressure, no judgment - just an open conversation. We discuss strengths, areas for growth, current challenges, aspirations, and what’s happening behind the scenes in their sporting and personal life. By the end of the call, athletes and parents often share that they feel much clearer about what my coaching involves, and are excited about the opportunity ahead.

If a potential client is reading this and feels something resonating, what would you encourage them to do next?

The next step is simple - reach out and let’s have a conversation!

The most effective time to develop a strong, resilient mindset is before challenges become patterns, giving us the opportunity to build healthy, positive habits from the very beginning.

My approach is practical, personalised, and supportive, and even a brief discovery call can provide clarity on how mental performance coaching can help your child thrive. Whether it’s improving confidence, handling pressure, or simply enjoying their sport more, taking that first step could be the beginning of unlocking their full potential - both on and off the field.
