We live in a world that constantly tells us to do more. To be more productive, more disciplined, more consistent, and whilst all of those things absolutely have their place and are things I preach on a daily basis to all of my clients, there’s a deeper truth that often gets overlooked in personal growth, which is this: You don’t create lasting change by doing more. You create it by becoming someone different.

Over the past seven years of working as a mindset coach and wellness mentor, I’ve seen the same pattern time and time again. Individuals with big goals, powerful visions, and a genuine desire to grow yet feel stuck, frustrated, and disconnected from the very life they’re trying to create. This isn’t because they aren’t capable or because they aren’t trying, it’s because there’s a gap. A gap between who they are now and who they need to be to hold the life they desire. And that gap? That’s identity.

Why identity matters more than mindset

Mindset is extremely powerful, but identity is foundational. You can repeat affirmations, set intentions, visualise your goals, but if, deep down, you still see yourself as someone who lacks confidence, struggles with consistency, or doubts your own ability, your actions will always reflect that belief. Manifestation and creation don’t work with a false narrative that you don’t actually believe.

Your identity shapes the decisions you make, the opportunities you take (or avoid), the standards you hold yourself to, the way you respond to challenges, and ultimately, the results you create. You don’t get what you want, you get what you believe you are.

Let’s get technical

From a neuroscience perspective, your brain is wired to keep you safe, not to push you into growth. Your neural pathways are built through repetition. The more you think a certain way, the more automatic that pattern becomes. So when you begin to challenge those patterns, to show up differently, think differently, act differently, your brain and your ego will naturally resist. That’s not because you’re doing something wrong, but because you’re doing something new. And new feels unfamiliar, and unfamiliar feels unsafe.

This is why so many people find themselves slipping back into old habits, even when they know what they “should” be doing. This is where identity work changes everything.

My six layers of becoming

True transformation doesn’t happen in one moment, it happens in layers. When I created The Becoming Project (my latest 6-week online Mindset Bootcamp, which starts on Monday, 13th April – spaces still available via my website), I built it around six core areas that I believe are essential for lasting change:

  1. Identity reset: Understanding who you are now and consciously choosing who you’re becoming.

  2. Emotional mastery: Learning to regulate, process, and respond instead of react.

  3. Embodied confidence: Not just thinking differently, but carrying yourself differently.

  4. Magnetic Mindset: Shifting your energy so you naturally attract aligned opportunities.

  5. Subconscious recalibration: Rewiring the beliefs and patterns that have been running in the background for years.

  6. Future self integration: Stepping into the version of you that already exists within you, and making decisions from that place.

Each of these layers builds upon the last, creating a foundation that doesn’t just inspire change, it sustains it.

One of the biggest shifts I see in my clients isn’t just in what they know, it’s in how they show up. They move from overthinking to trusting, from hesitation to action, and from self-doubt to self-leadership. And that’s the difference between learning something and becoming it. Knowledge alone doesn’t change your life, embodiment does.

If you take one thing from this article, let it be this: You are not starting from scratch. You are starting from awareness. The version of you that you’re trying to become isn’t something you need to chase, it’s something you need to step into, and that begins by shifting your identity, gently, consistently, and intentionally from the inside out. When you become the person who is aligned with your desires, your reality has no choice but to follow.
