There are many things in the world that we do to and for ourselves to look good and feel good not only on the outside on the inside as well. Going to the salon to get a fresh hairdo or a cut from the barber, making the final arrangement for that well deserved vacation or even knocking out a long awaited goal on that “to-do” list not only makes us feel great about ourselves and boosts our self esteem but it also gives us a sense of self-worth.

Doing something nice for someone else personally makes me feel good in my heart. To be able to make a positive difference in someone else’s life brings about a rewarding feeling that money cannot buy. Doing something for someone else does not necessarily have to cost any money but rather time spent helping them in some sort of way. Of the two, time is the more valuable commodity in that it cannot be retrieved once spent so it must be used wisely.

When doing something nice for someone else, the motive should never be to get something in return, although you will receive in turn. When you do something nice for someone else, without ill intent, you are setting yourself up to one day receive back in return, as per the Law of Giving. One of my favorite charitable organizations that I support from afar, Al-Karim Temple No. 242 which operates in Riverdale Georgia, constantly makes a difference in their community. Its members, including a member who is dear to me Roderick Wise, constantly participates in events that help families in need, host events that aid children of all ages, regularly feed and clothe the homeless as well as collaborate with other organizations to sponsor health awareness events. They display the true meaning of benevolence.

According to the Rush University Medical Center (www.rush.edu) , a study concluded that donors who contribute to charities on a regular basis show that after donating, the part of the brain that controls feelings of reward, pleasure is activated. This part of the brain is known as the mesolimbic system. Furthermore, giving has other benefits such as:

  1. Greater self-esteem: giving gives a sense of purpose in which the giver has felt like they made a difference. That in turn can boost a person’s confidence.

  2. Lower risk of depression: giving allows a person to feel socially connected to others, as it has “…helped people take their minds off of their own depression and anxiety symptoms.” – see here

  3. Better physical health: giving to others lowers cortisol levels associated with stress which in turn boosts mood and the immune system.

  4. Longer life: which results from less stress that affects the physical as well as the psychological state.

  5. Spiritual growth: when you give out of your heart, not looking for anything in return, good things begin to come your way. In the bible, Luke 6:38 expressly states, “Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure , pressed down and shaken together, and running over, shall men give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again.”

The life quality of the giver as well as the recipient are both enhanced as a result of selflessness.
