Online Games and Pop Culture

The impact of online gaming is apparent on several sides of pop culture. The amount of gamers participating in online gaming is massive. Gaming console and game sales have shot through the roof yearly.

Online slot developers partner with massive brands and create games according to trends. The way pop culture showcases slots makes bonuses like free spins more popular with players.

Many platforms now allow gamers to stream their gaming sessions. People are highly interested in watching professional gamers or influencers enjoying their gameplay. Some aim to gain better skills, while others are there to solely enjoy the stream.

Game Culture

It’s easier to understand how video gaming has influenced pop culture without starting by discussing how the game culture started. Like how movies and books began, a group of programmers, who were avid gamers, spent their time competing through Spacewar! in the 1970s. The game didn’t take over the media as intensely, but video arcades and home video gaming started gaining popularity soon after.

Youth culture started adapting to the type of media when arcades and home video games boomed. They used the concept of competition to gain the highest score. People began spending hours at the arcade or enjoying video gaming at home in the 1980s. The game characters became popular, and cartoons based on Super Mario Bros and Pac-Man appeared in the media.

The characters quickly become cultural icons. Yet, the generation playing Super Mario Bros quickly outgrew the game. Companies felt the need to improve and release products that appeal to older demographics due to the problem.

That way, the average age of video game players increased to 35 in 2009. Nintendo Wii became prominent in the industry among retirement communities, making Wii Bowling popular. The gradual increase of the gaming age started a significant acceptance of video games in the form of mainstream entertainment.

Online Gaming

Video games never stopped developing, and the availability of the internet makes games more exciting and significant in the industry. Platforms like YouTube and Twitch enabled gamers to start a career. People interested in gaming yet rather watch and enjoy others playing can also do so through such platforms.

These improvements birthed many streamers and gaming influencers. The way gamers can showcase their skills from these platforms leads to multiplayer games. Now, people can enjoy the same game while staying inside their homes.

Video Games Taking Over The Film Industry

Video games are more accessible than ever. The revenue of the video game industry accelerated at a remarkable speed, giving way for manufacturers to come up with new gaming consoles. It was around the time when Nintendo, Sega, and Sony took over Atari VCS and Magnavox Odyssey’s places that games entered pop culture.

One of the most iconic examples is the Pokemon series released in partnership between Game Boy and Nintendo in 1996. It took over the world, and the game was adapted into a TV series after a year. Pokemon is still around in the 21st century in many forms. There are mobile games and even trading cards based on Pokemon that players can collect.

Sony, alongside Sega, also managed to adapt Sonic The Hedgehog into a TV series. Sony’s Uncharted was turned into a movie recently, and the Last of Us TV series also follows Uncharted’s steps.

Video Games’ Influence on Music

Ever since the release of arcades, games have used music to make things more entertaining for players. Game music started from computer beeps into a full theme song that makes them iconic. Sony PlayStation, Sega Saturn, and Nintendo 64 were some of the firsts who made it possible for developers to implement sampled audio in their products. They can record physical instruments to use on any of their releases.

When the Final Fantasy series was released, the game elevated the quality of gaming music by using a score by the composer Nobuo Uematsu. The music quality could be compared to film soundtracks made with a full orchestra of instrumental and vocal tracks. The quality was proven to be effective for the developer. Well-known musicians started collaborating with game projects, bringing popularity to the artists as well.

The gaming industry started aiming to improve its music quality. Now, New York University, Yale, and Berklee College of Music offer programs focusing on students aspiring to make gaming music.

Rock bands also followed the steps to expand their presence in the gaming industry. Games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band have been released to support these bands through video games. On the other hand, the Beatles promoted their album through the game The Beatles: Rock Band as proof of how significant the power of games has become in pop culture.
