Jalil Jamar Surge, Black Visual Artist and Creative Entrepreneur

Who is Jalil Surge? Introduce yourself, your hobbies, your favourites, you at home and in business. Tell us something interesting about yourself.

Jalil Surge is an introspective artist, storyteller, and creative visionary who uses art as a tool for healing and honest conversation. At home, I am reflective and observant, someone who recharges through painting, journaling, listening to neo-soul and jazz, and studying human behavior and trauma. I'm drawn to quiet late-night creativity and meaningful conversations that uncover what people are really feeling beneath the surface.

In business, through Abstractions By Jah Jah and his Arts & Conversations platform, I create experiences that blend visual art, spoken word, and dialogue to reduce stigma around mental health and encourage emotional expression. I am less focused on trends and more focused on impact, believing success is when someone feels seen because of their work. What makes me interested is my ability to listen beyond words and translate unspoken emotions into art that feels personal, reflective, and healing.

What first drew you to abstract art, and how did Abstractions By Jah Jah come to life?

What first drew me to abstract art was the freedom it gave me to express emotions that words couldn’t capture. Early on, I realized that literal representation limited the depth of what I wanted to communicate, the nuances of pain, joy, identity, and healing felt too big, too complex for realism alone. Abstract art became my language for translating inner experiences into visuals that could speak directly to the heart. Abstractions By Jah Jah was born from that same impulse, to create a space where art and emotional honesty intersect. It started as a personal practice, but I quickly saw the power it had to connect with others, especially around mental health, trauma, and self-expression. Over time, it grew into a brand, a podcast, and a platform for community dialogue, all rooted in the belief that creativity isn’t just decoration, it’s a way to understand ourselves, heal, and feel seen.

How would you describe your artistic style and the emotions or messages behind your work?

My artistic style is rooted in abstraction, blending bold colors, fluid forms, and layered textures to create pieces that feel alive and deeply personal. I work in a way that’s intuitive, letting emotion guide the brush, the shape, and the movement, so each piece becomes a reflection of internal landscapes rather than just a visual object. The emotions behind my work range from introspection and vulnerability to joy, liberation, and reclamation. I aim to capture the unspoken, the things we often feel but can’t articulate, such as trauma, healing, identity, desire, and resilience.

Each piece is meant to invite viewers into their own reflection, to feel seen, to question, and to connect with their own emotional truth. My art isn’t just something to look at, it’s an experience, a conversation, and a mirror for the soul.

What makes your approach to abstraction different from other artists in the space?

My approach to abstraction is rooted in conversation rather than decoration. Through Abstractions By Jah Jah, I’m not starting with color theory or composition, I’m starting with emotion. A memory, tension in the body, a question about identity, or a moment of release becomes the blueprint. The painting is the translation of something that didn’t have language yet. A lot of abstraction invites viewers to interpret freely, but my work meets them halfway. The layers represent psychological experiences, protection, suppression, healing, pleasure, confrontation. So instead of asking, “What do you see?” The work often makes people ask, “Why do I feel this?”

I also extend the artwork beyond the canvas. The same piece might become spoken word, a conversation, wearable art, or part of a dialogue space. That way the art doesn’t just live on a wall, it lives in community. My goal isn’t only visual impact, it’s emotional permission. I want people to realize abstraction isn’t randomness. It’s recognition in another language.

What sets my approach to abstraction apart is that it’s not just about aesthetics, it’s about intentional emotional dialogue.

Many artists focus on form, color, or technique alone, but my work is guided by the stories, experiences, and inner worlds of the people I create for and with. I blend visual abstraction with elements of spoken word, narrative, and even community engagement, so each piece is both personal and relational.

My art is designed to listen as much as it expresses, it’s about translating the unspoken emotions we carry into a language that resonates with others. Through Abstractions By Jah Jah, I fuse creativity and healing, making my abstract work not only visually striking but also emotionally transformative, sparking reflection, conversation, and connection in ways that go beyond the canvas.

Who do you create your art for, and how do your pieces impact the people who own them?

I create my art for anyone seeking a deeper connection with themselves, people who want to feel seen, understood, or reminded of their own emotional truth. My work speaks to those who are navigating healing, identity, trauma, or personal growth, as well as those who simply crave something that resonates beyond surface beauty.

For the people who own my pieces, the impact is often subtle but profound, they become mirrors for emotion, conversation starters, and spaces for reflection. Collectors tell me my work helps them access feelings they didn’t know how to name, sparks introspection, or even inspires courage to express themselves more fully. Each piece is meant to hold space, for remembrance, liberation, and connection, turning a visual object into an intimate experience that lives in their world long after it leaves my studio.

How do you work with clients who want commissioned or custom abstract pieces?

When I work with clients on commissioned pieces through Abstractions By Jah Jah, I treat it as a collaborative experience rather than a transaction. I don’t just ask what colors they want, I ask what they want the piece to hold. The process usually begins with a conversation about emotion, intention, and space. Are they marking a life transition? Healing from something? Celebrating growth? Designing for a home, office, or creative space? I listen for themes, energy, and story. That becomes the foundation.

From there, I create a loose conceptual direction, sometimes a mood board, color palette, or written intention statement, so we’re aligned before I begin painting. I protect the integrity of abstraction, so while clients guide the emotional and environmental direction, I allow the intuitive layering process to unfold naturally. Throughout the process, I provide progress updates at key stages, especially when it comes to major compositional shifts. That way, they feel included without over-controlling the organic movement of the piece.

When the artwork is complete, I also offer a written reflection explaining the layers, textures, and symbolism embedded in the work. I want clients to understand not just what they’re hanging, but what they’re carrying into their space. Ultimately, my commissioned work is about creating something that feels deeply personal, emotionally aligned, and energetically intentional.

How can your art transform a space, whether it’s a home, office, or creative environment?

My art transforms a space by shifting its emotional atmosphere. Whether in a home, office, or creative studio, the work becomes more than decoration, it becomes an energetic presence that influences how people feel and interact within the room. The layered textures, movement, and abstraction invite reflection, conversation, and openness, turning ordinary walls into points of connection.

In a home, it creates sanctuary and emotional warmth, in an office, it softens rigidity and encourages thoughtful collaboration, in a creative environment, it grants permission to experiment and express freely. The transformation happens not just visually, but psychologically, the space begins to hold intention, memory, and feeling, making it an experience rather than just a setting.

What do clients often tell you after living with one of your pieces for a while?

Clients often tell me that the piece changes over time, not physically, but emotionally. At first, they’re drawn to the colors or movement, but after living with it, they start to see themselves in it. They notice new details depending on their mood, and many say the artwork begins to feel like a companion in the room, something that reflects their growth, challenges, or healing. Some tell me it sparks deeper conversations with guests, others say it brings them calm on difficult days.

What I hear most is that the piece doesn’t just stay on the wall, it becomes part of their daily rhythm, holding memory and meaning in ways they didn’t expect when they first brought it home.

What challenges do people face when choosing art, and how do you help them feel confident in their choice?

Many people struggle to choose art because it feels deeply personal and subjective. They worry about picking the “right” piece, whether it matches their space, or if they’ll connect with it long-term. Some feel pressure to understand it intellectually, rather than trusting their emotional response. The underlying challenge is trusting their own taste and instincts in a world full of opinions and trends.

I help clients feel confident by guiding them to focus on how the art makes them feel rather than whether it “fits” a formula. We discuss the mood they want in the space, the energy they want the piece to carry, and how it resonates with them personally. I provide guidance on scale, placement, and interaction with light so they can visualize it in their environment. By centering their intuition and offering practical support, the choice becomes less about fear of error and more about authentic connection, leaving them confident that the piece is truly theirs.

How can someone collaborate with you or purchase a piece from Abstractions By Jah Jah?

Collaborating with me or purchasing a piece from Abstractions By Jah Jah is an intentional, personalized experience. For commissioned work, I start by having a conversation about your vision, the emotions or energy you want the piece to carry, and the space it will inhabit. From there, I create a custom concept, sharing progress and adjustments along the way so the final work is both visually striking and emotionally resonant.

For existing pieces, clients can explore available works through my website, social media, or pop-up events, where each piece comes with its own story and energy. I also offer guidance on size, placement, and how the artwork interacts with your space to ensure it truly transforms your environment. Whether commissioning or purchasing a ready-made piece, the process is collaborative, immersive, and designed to connect you deeply with the artwork so it feels like it was made specifically for you.

What’s next for you as an artist, and how can people stay connected to?

What’s next for me as an artist is expanding the ways people can experience and interact with Abstractions By Jah Jah. I’m exploring new mediums, immersive installations, and wearable art that carry the same emotional energy as my paintings, so the work can move beyond walls and into everyday life. I’m also developing projects that combine visual art with dialogue, sound, and storytelling, creating spaces for reflection, healing, and community connection.

People can stay connected by following my journey on social media, signing up for my newsletter, or attending events and exhibitions where the art comes alive. Through these channels, they’ll get early access to new collections, behind-the-scenes insight into my creative process, and opportunities to collaborate or commission pieces. Staying connected isn’t just about updates, it’s about becoming part of the ongoing conversation between art, emotion, and personal expression.
