In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to lose sight of our own worth while chasing external validation. Yet, self-love is not selfish. It is the foundation of a healthy life. When we take time to honor who we are, flaws and all, we begin to understand that true value comes from within. Practicing self-love means setting boundaries, giving ourselves grace, and celebrating small victories. It is choosing to be kind to ourselves in moments when self-criticism feels easier.

Smiling woman with curly hair and glasses poses in a patterned dress and necklace against a plain white background.

Self-love begins with the quiet, everyday decisions we make for ourselves. That simple shift in perspective became the seed of real change. Confidence, too, doesn’t arrive all at once. It builds slowly, like a muscle strengthened by use. I found that each time I chose to show up for myself, whether it was taking on a challenge, speaking up when my voice mattered, or simply refusing to shrink, I grew stronger. Confidence isn’t about never feeling afraid. It’s about walking forward anyway, carrying the lessons of each stumble as proof of resilience.

The most beautiful part is how this inner growth doesn’t just stay within us. It spills outward. Empowerment is contagious. When we model self-love and confidence, we give silent permission for others to believe in themselves as well. And so the cycle continues, one person’s courage lights the path for another, and together, we create a community where everyone has the chance to rise.

My dear friend, Sherry McMillian, is a shining example of someone who shows up in the world with grace and confidence, leaving a meaningful impact on everyone she encounters. As a current contestant in the 2025 Ms. Full Figured North Carolina Pageant, a platform that highlights the accomplishments and commitment to self-love while empowering others to make a difference, Sherry effortlessly serves those around her. Through her faithfulness in ministry at her church to her consistent efforts in bettering her community, Sherry is raising the bar with being beautiful from the inside out and from the outside in.

Like Sherry, each of us has the power to show up fully, love ourselves deeply, and create ripples of confidence that reach far beyond what we can see.
