Let’s face it: many of us are terrified of revealing our true selves. We fear judgment, we fear not being good enough, and we fear failure. In a world that often equates perfection with success, breaking free from the relentless pursuit of approval can feel impossible.

Penelope Magoulianiti book

In my upcoming book, "Claws Out, Thriving in a World That Wants You Tamed," I share a deeply personal story that transformed my life and career. Today, I’d like to offer a glimpse into that journey and reveal how it led me to develop the concept of the "Strategic Roar"—a framework for embracing authentic leadership.

The perfection trap

In my early career years, I was consumed by the need to prove my worth. I believed that working harder than everyone else, shouldering more responsibilities, and never saying no would finally earn me the recognition I craved. I competed fiercely with my colleagues, obsessed over results, and allowed my work to consume my identity.

On the surface, I seemed to have it all together: a top performer, climbing the corporate ladder. But behind the mask, I was crumbling under the pressure.

The hidden cost of success

My obsessive pursuit of success had a price. Despite my efforts, promotions were elusive, recognition was scarce, and I was battling feelings of resentment and overwhelm. As my stress levels mounted, my health began to decline. I gained weight, struggled with sleep, and slowly withdrew from my personal life, cutting myself off from my family and friends.

I was stuck in a vicious cycle, convinced that things would change if I pushed a little harder. But they didn’t. In fact, they got worse.

The wake-up call

It wasn’t until a serious accident forced me to pause that I realized how disconnected I had become from my values, my desires, and the people I cared about the most. My life, once filled with potential and passion, had become a marathon of burnout, chasing approval that never came.

This accident became my wake-up call. I finally recognized that the person I was striving to be wasn’t who I truly was or wanted to be. And with that realization, I started making different choices.

  • I stopped being the "yes" person for everything and everyone.

  • I rekindled my passion for dancing, which brought me joy and helped me reconnect with myself.

  • I prioritized self-care—starting with my health, diet, and sleep.

  • I invested in personal growth, reading, learning, and pursuing interests that had long been ignored.

Finding my authentic voice

As I began to prioritize authenticity over perfection, something extraordinary happened. The external validation I had been chasing for years finally started coming, but I no longer needed it by then. I had cultivated something far more valuable: a deep sense of self-worth and inner balance that external opinions couldn’t shake.

I discovered that the less I sought approval from others, the more I received it. The more I embraced my true self, the more I resonated with those around me. And that’s when my authentic voice—what I now call my "Strategic Roar," began to emerge.

The "Strategic Roar" isn’t about being the loudest or the most dominant in the room. It’s about leading with clarity, confidence, and conviction, grounded in who you are and what you stand for. It’s about recognizing that true leadership doesn’t come from conforming to others' expectations but from aligning with your core values and purpose.

The ripple effect of authenticity in leadership

Embracing my authentic self not only transformed my personal life but also profoundly impacted my career. My relationships deepened, my work took on new meaning, and I found the fulfillment that had eluded me for years.

More importantly, I realized that my journey began to inspire and empower those around me to do the same. Authentic leadership creates a powerful ripple that spreads through organizations, communities, and beyond.

Your invitation to authentic empowerment

I share this story not simply as a reflection on my personal journey but as an invitation to you. An invitation to examine your own life and ask yourself:

  • Are you wearing a mask of perfection that’s holding you back from your true potential?

  • Are you chasing a version of success that doesn’t align with your values?

  • What would your life and career look like if you fully embraced your authentic power?

In "Claws Out," I offer the tools and strategies to help you answer these questions and embark on your own journey of authentic empowerment. Because when we unleash our true selves, we thrive in our personal lives and create a powerful ripple that can change our workplaces, communities, and, ultimately, the world.
