Periodically, I notice that old issues from childhood resurface and wreak havoc with me emotionally. They are triggered by issues in my present circumstances which have me conflicted. I've done numerous journaling exercises around these issues over my 69 years and I’m always surprised when they pop up again. Although I've made progress through the years, there are a few that still linger in my subconscious.

Forgiveness written on white sand

I often ask myself why is that?

I have come to realize that these 'patterns' are not just subconscious programming, they are chemicals in my brain and are therefore cells in my body. So, this most recent 'episode' had me mulling over what it takes to completely transform old patterns where they no longer resurface. The internal answer I received was...

Only complete forgiveness will work!

As with most of my internal messages, the two words 'complete forgiveness' had a cascading vision attached to them. In those two words was the reminder that my true essence is not limited to this body-form I am wearing. I am a spirit of the Divine, an eternal being that has already lived many physical lives. I am not the ego-persona I take on while in the physical dimension. Therefore, to stay focused on what my personality has gone through is to miss the mark completely. As long as my attention resides there, I will think my perceived 'injuries' have damaged ME in some way. I must remind myself there is no 'me' at this level of existence. It is why a personality is called a persona, implying its temporary nature.

Complete forgiveness can only be achieved when the emotional identification with an issue or pattern is neutralized. You have to see the persona self as only a mechanism we use to maneuver our physical lives, while we are here.

We hang onto it so tightly because we have forgotten where we come from. Our true nature is spirit. As spirit, we are already eternal and unlimited. We are one with the Universe in its entirety.

Complete forgiveness is letting go of the identification with our personality and all subsequent perceived injuries and/or successes attached to it. Essentially, anything that throws us into the 'measuring' or 'comparing' process is the trap.

There is nothing in the material world that we could measure our progress or failures against. Nothing here has any true meaning in the illusion we call the third dimension. We are not as we are raised to believe we are.

Why?

Because we are a Divine Spark of the Creator, an eternal life, and an ever-expanding spirit.

A Course In Miracles says it best in Lesson 21 of the Workbook. It states:

I am not a body. I am free. For I am as God created me.
