Known for her work in detoxification, subconscious rewiring, and her Katie in the Kitchen series, she helps leaders embody health, vitality, and authentic self-expression.

From TikTok “success stories,” like “I did a parasite cleanse and lost 10 lbs,” to influencers showing jars of strange-looking results, parasite cleanses are everywhere right now. And while the idea of “flushing out what doesn’t belong” is appealing, here’s what most people don’t realize, starting a parasite cleanse at the wrong time, or without the right preparation, can actually make you feel worse, not better.

As a licensed Physician Assistant specializing in functional and regenerative medicine, I’ve worked with many patients and clients navigating detox, gut health, and chronic illness. I’ve also gone through parasite cleansing myself. The takeaway? Parasite cleansing can be a powerful tool for healing, but only when it’s approached safely, with the right foundations in place.
If you suspect parasites or are tempted to try the latest herbal cleanse trend, pause and ask this, "Is my body truly prepared to handle what’s about to be released?"
What is a parasite cleanse and why are people doing it?
Parasites aren’t just a third-world health issue, they’re surprisingly common in today’s modern world. Parasites are organisms that depend on a host to survive, often drawing nutrients and leaving the host depleted. They can come from undercooked food, contaminated water, pets, travel, or even just a compromised immune system.
According to the CDC, more than 60 million Americans may be chronically infected with parasites such as Toxoplasma gondii, often without knowing it. Some people never develop symptoms, while others experience persistent digestive issues, fatigue, skin problems, or brain fog, especially when gut integrity is weakened or detox pathways are sluggish.
No wonder people turn to parasite cleanses. Many popular protocols promise to “flush out” parasites through herbs, diets, or supplements. But here’s the reality, while certain ingredients show promise in lab settings, there’s no strong clinical evidence that DIY parasite cleanse diets actually work, and in some cases, they may be unsafe. (Cleveland Clinic)
So why are they trending? Because people are desperate for answers. They feel stuck, digestively, energetically, and mentally, and parasites become the target. And while addressing parasites can bring relief, the key is how and when you do it.
The risks of starting too soon
Jumping straight into antiparasitic herbs without preparation can trigger what’s known as a Herxheimer reaction, a flare of symptoms caused by the rapid die-off of microbes releasing endotoxins into circulation. (NCBI)
Common “die-off” symptoms include:
Intense fatigue
Headaches or migraines
Digestive upset (bloating, constipation, or diarrhea)
Anxiety or mood swings
Skin breakouts
While mild die-off reactions are sometimes expected, severe reactions are a sign that your body isn’t equipped to handle the detox load. This is why preparation is everything.
4 essential steps to take before starting a parasite cleanse
Below are four foundational strategies I’ve seen transform outcomes for my clients and patients. Skipping these is what often causes overwhelm, detox backlash, or feeling worse instead of better.
Open drainage pathways properly: Think of your body like plumbing, if the pipes are clogged, adding more water just creates overflow. Your liver, kidneys, colon, and lymph must be functioning well before killing parasites.
Hydrate and replete minerals: Parasite cleansing is taxing. Without proper hydration and minerals, you risk dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and worsened fatigue. Drink adequate filtered water, and include mineral-rich electrolytes (magnesium, potassium, sodium), especially if you’ve been on low-salt or restrictive diets.
Support gut motility: If you’re not having regular bowel movements, toxins linger and reabsorb. Gut motility, regulated by your microbiome and nervous system, is non-negotiable. (PMC)
Use binders wisely: Binders, like activated charcoal, bentonite clay, or zeolite, act like sponges, catching toxins so they can be eliminated safely. Without binders, your body is left to process everything on its own.
What not to do before a parasite cleanse
Don’t skip foundations like drainage, hydration, or motility.
Don’t jump into strong herbs without guidance.
Don’t assume “more is better”, excessive antiparasitic herbs can disrupt your microbiome.
Don’t rely on social media hacks. Your body is unique, and what worked for someone online may not be safe for you.
When done safely, the results can be transformative
When the body is properly prepared, parasite cleansing can be a deeply transformative experience. Many people report:
Clearer skin
Improved digestion
More energy and mental clarity
Relief from chronic bloating or brain fog
The difference isn’t the cleanse itself, it’s how you support your body before and during the process.
Parasite cleanses aren’t inherently unsafe. But doing them the wrong way, without drainage, hydration, motility, or binders, sets you up for unnecessary suffering.
If you’re ready to detox in a way that’s safe, guided, and empowering, that’s exactly why I created the Pure Pathways: Detox Transformation program. As a functional medicine PA who has helped both myself and my clients heal through this process, I designed this program to prepare your body step by step, so that deeper detox work like parasite cleansing actually feels supportive, not overwhelming.
You can join the waitlist for the next live round, or start the self-paced version now if you’re ready today. Click here.
Because true detox isn’t just about “killing parasites.” It’s about supporting your body to thrive, so you can feel fully alive.
