Trauma isn’t just a mental or emotional event; it’s a full-body experience. When we endure significant stress, abuse, neglect, or heartbreak, the body stores this unresolved energy. If left unprocessed, this emotional baggage can dysregulate the nervous system, weaken the immune system, and disrupt hormonal balance, creating the perfect environment for disease.

The renowned scientist Dr. Gabor Maté has extensively explored this connection, stating:

“When we repress our emotions, the body acts them out for us.” The body essentially becomes a stage where unaddressed pain plays out as illness.

The mind-body connection in disease

Cancer: Unreleased trauma taking physical form

Cancer is one of the clearest examples of how trauma manifests physically. Suppressed emotions, particularly deep grief, anger, or resentment, create an energetic imbalance that can lead to cellular chaos.

In my own case, breast cancer was not just a disease. It was a signal. Years of burying emotions, enduring stress, and failing to process grief created a toxic environment in my body. By using cannabis oil and embracing natural, holistic healing practices, I healed both my body and soul. Today, I’m 7 years cancer-free (when told I would be dead within a year for refusing conventional treatment) and living proof of the power of addressing the emotional roots of illness.

Autoimmune disorders: Turning against yourself

Conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis often stem from a history of self-neglect, emotional abuse, or feelings of inadequacy. These illnesses reflect an internalised conflict where the immune system attacks the body’s own tissues, mirroring unresolved emotional pain.

Healing these conditions requires fostering self-compassion, addressing past traumas, and prioritising emotional well-being alongside physical health.

Heart disease: Carrying the weight of emotional pain

The heart is more than just a pump; it’s an emotional centre. Chronic stress, loneliness, and unresolved grief often contribute to heart disease. Broken heart syndrome, for example, shows how acute emotional distress can physically weaken the heart muscle.

Fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome: The exhaustion of trauma

People with fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue often describe lives filled with stress, unhealed trauma, or prolonged emotional strain. The body, stuck in survival mode, eventually becomes fatigued from carrying an emotional burden for too long.

Digestive disorders: Gut feelings turned physical

The gut is intimately connected to our emotions. Conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s disease, and ulcers are often linked to anxiety, fear, or stress. The body processes emotions just as it does food, and unresolved trauma can lead to chronic digestive issues.

Skin conditions: The body’s visible cry for help

Eczema, psoriasis, and acne can often reflect emotional distress or shame. Skin issues are sometimes the body’s way of externalising what we’re unwilling to confront emotionally.

Migraines: Suppressed tension and frustration

Migraines often have emotional roots, particularly suppressed anger, frustration, or tension. Addressing the underlying emotional triggers can significantly reduce their frequency and intensity.

Why mainstream medicine misses the mark

The traditional healthcare system often focuses on treating symptoms rather than addressing their root causes. Pills and surgeries are quick fixes but rarely offer long-term healing. What’s missing is the understanding that the body and mind are not separate they’re deeply intertwined.

When we rely solely on pharmaceutical solutions, we ignore the emotional and spiritual dimensions of health. This disconnect leads to temporary relief at best and chronic conditions at worst.

Healing the root cause: Trauma release and holistic wellness

True healing requires addressing the trauma beneath the illness. Here’s how:

1. Emotional release

Practices like journaling, therapy, and breathwork can help process and release stored emotional pain.

2. Mindfulness and meditation

These practices calm the nervous system and allow the body to enter a state of healing.

3. Cannabis and CBD

Natural remedies like CBD support emotional balance, reduce inflammation, and help regulate the nervous system.

4. Energetic healing

Modalities like Reiki, acupuncture, or yoga help realign the body’s energy fields.

5. Clean nutrition

A nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet supports both physical and emotional health.

6. Connection and support

Surrounding yourself with understanding, compassionate individuals fosters emotional resilience.

Reframing illness as a teacher

Illness is not a punishment, it’s a wake-up call. It invites us to pause, reflect, and realign with our true selves. Rather than asking, “Why me?” we can ask, “What is this teaching me?”

For me, cancer was the greatest teacher of all. It taught me the importance of self-care, emotional healing, and holistic wellness. By addressing the emotional roots of my illness, I not only healed but also found a deeper sense of purpose and fulfilment.

If you’re battling illness or seeking better health, I encourage you to look beyond the physical symptoms. Ask yourself:

  • What emotions or traumas have I left unresolved?

  • How can I reconnect with my body and soul?

  • Am I willing to embrace holistic healing?

Your body is your ally, not your enemy. By addressing the emotional and spiritual roots of illness, you empower yourself to heal fully and authentically.

Healing is a journey, and while it requires courage, the rewards are life-changing. Take that first step today. Your health and happiness depend on it.
