Life is a series of patterns. Often, without realizing it, we repeat cycles from our past that stem from wounds we haven’t healed. At the heart of these patterns lies the inner child, the younger version of yourself that still carries the emotions, experiences, and beliefs formed during childhood.

When left unaddressed, these wounds shape your reality, causing you to recreate struggles from the past instead of stepping into the abundant, fulfilling life you deserve. Healing your inner child is not just a journey of self-love and compassion but a powerful way to transform your entire life.

Five signs your inner child needs healing and how to nurture them

1. You struggle with self-worth

Does a critical inner voice often remind you that you’re not good enough, no matter how much you achieve? This voice may stem from unmet emotional needs during childhood, where validation or encouragement might have been scarce. Your inner child yearns to feel valued, accepted, and celebrated for who they truly are.

How to begin: Start by offering yourself the kind words you needed as a child. Write affirmations that affirm your worth and repeat them daily. Visualize comforting your younger self, reminding them that they are enough, just as they are.

2. You fear rejection or abandonment

Do you find yourself overthinking, people-pleasing, or avoiding deep connections to protect yourself from being hurt? This is a classic sign that your inner child fears being left behind or feels unworthy of love, based on past experiences.

How to begin: Build trust with yourself by practicing self-soothing techniques. When fears arise, gently reassure your inner child that you will not abandon them, even if others have. Journaling can also help you identify and rewrite the beliefs tied to rejection.

3. You experience emotional triggers

If you react intensely to situations that seem minor to others, this could be your inner child reacting to unresolved pain. Triggers often point to a deeper wound that needs healing.

How to begin: When triggered, pause and ask yourself: "What does this remind me of from my past?" This awareness helps you identify the source of your pain. Once identified, imagine embracing your inner child and offering them the understanding they lacked in that moment. This is referred to as reparenting yourself. While it’s advised to seek support from a therapist, mentor, or healer, you can absolutely self-soothe.

4. You struggle with setting boundaries

Do you often say “yes” to others at the expense of your own needs? A lack of boundaries may stem from feeling unworthy of taking up space or fearing conflict due to past experiences.

How to begin: Practice saying “no” in small, manageable ways. Remind yourself and your inner child that it’s safe to prioritize your needs. Affirm that your feelings matter and deserve respect.

5. You’re stuck in self-sabotaging patterns

Do you find yourself procrastinating, avoiding opportunities, or giving up before you even start? Self-sabotage often originates from a fear of failure or success, deeply rooted in childhood beliefs.

How to begin: Identify the beliefs driving your self-sabotage. Speak to your inner child and let them know it’s safe to try, safe to fail, and safe to succeed. Celebrate small wins to build trust in your ability to grow and thrive.

Why healing your inner child transforms your life

When you address your inner child’s needs, you break free from cycles of pain and step into a new narrative. Healing enables you to:

  • Build healthier relationships based on trust and mutual respect.

  • Release limiting beliefs that hold you back from success.

  • Cultivate self-love and self-compassion.

  • Lead your life with confidence and clarity.

By reconnecting with your inner child, you unlock a wellspring of creativity, joy, and authenticity. This process allows you to design the life you deserve rather than repeating the hardships of the past.

Sherisse Bisram, Inner Power Activation Leader + Intuitive Healer

Sherisse is the embodiment of everything she stands for authentic strength, loyalty and empowerment. Although, the journey to get to there did not come easy. Growing up in a volatile household and as a woman of colour in a predominantly white area added understandable hardships and like all young women, Sherisse faced unwanted attention. In addition, she was undermined by society for being outspoken in her opinion rather than playing to the expected norm of being “seen and not heard”. Understandably she was forced to build resilience, and as a result, at 23 she noticed that she had difficulty showing vulnerability and emotions. Sherisse realised that this was not a healthy way to live, with this in mind, she decided to embark upon her own journey of self discovery.

Combining her self evolution, education and life experiences, Sherisse has gained tools that have helped her to release the pain of her past, understand and conceptualise her emotions and regain true authentic strength. These tools, which consist of meditation and mindset work, journaling and mindful movement have shaped her into the empowered confident woman she is today. These practices have had a tremendous impact in her life. Sherisse believes by sharing these tools with others with the incorporation of dance, through her workshops, classes and programs will in turn, help whomever she teaches become the healthiest, happiest and most confident versions of themselves.
