There is a lot of misconception surrounding investing in spiritual guidance. There seems to be two sides to people’s beliefs surrounding this too. They are the opposite end of the spectrum where some believe you should never pay for it and others believe you should always pay. It may be cultural differences however, I am here to break those down. Personally, I come from a lineage of cunning folk back in England. Being fifth generation medium the reality is that the gift went back many more generations. We all know the history and how people went underground due to fear of prosecution. I also moved to Canada in 2007 and have settled into rural living in Southern Alberta. Here I have learnt the history of the Natives. Settle in as I paint two pictures for you.

In old England, there is a village of people. The castle overlooks as the villages are nestled around, some close and some far. There are many different people who live to serve the King. Each village looks very similar though; farmers, bakers, black smiths, artisans, and more. Everyone had a role to play and together they had all that was needed. This included the local cunning folk. Over the span of time this may have varied on how this looked. In all the images that have been created in our modern world it was a witch in a house with her cat and herbs. This is obviously not really true. They were not Witches as they were there to protect the village from witchcraft, they were the medicine women, the midwives. For generation’s knowledge about plants, medicine, and the seasons were passed down.

In North America, the Blackfoot were caretakers of the land. They walked vast areas from what we know as Alberta Canada, all the way down to Yellowstone National Park America. They followed the Buffalo which gave them food, shelter, and medicine. They were a thriving peoples who worked together as a community. Again, each member had a place from warrior, chief, and medicine man. Their knowledge also passed down for generations relating to the land they lived upon.

Whether in England or Canada these original cultures were eventually destroyed through the spread of Christianity. Although, in vastly differing time periods generations of knowledge were destroyed and we can argue that some of it was lost forever. What I want you to focus on here is that when people went to the village cunning folk or the medicine man they did so with a trade in hand. We can only surmise that it would be either food, clothing, or some other material goods that were needed. People understood clearly that for the guidance or healing there was an energy exchange that had to be compensated for.

Honestly, I don’t know where it went from being compensated to our modern world of the expectation for spiritual guidance as a free entity. Now I have painted a picture in your mind here are the three reasons you should pay for spiritual guidance;

1. Energy Exchange

For many people who go into healing as a way to serve others they have generations of knowledge. For those who have come to this earth with a gift they also have to invest in training. We live in a world that needs people to show their accreditation. I have my education degree, arts & science degree, certified life coaching, Reiki training, Mediumship training, Yoga teacher training, plus the multitude of courses I have taken surrounding business. Healers invest large amounts of time and their personal resources to be of service. It also takes a lot of study and practice to be a good spiritual guide. They are deserving of compensation as much as someone who does your books, cleans your car, or serves you at the checkout.

2. Free Doesn’t = Appreciation

This is the biggest failing of our modern society with the free access we have to copious amounts of information. A quick google search will find you almost anything you want to know today. Before you would have to go to a library and research through the use of books, go to university to be taught from someone who had studied a discipline for many years, or go to an elder who held the knowledge. It is not like this today. No-one has to work for knowledge. Those who get something for free don’t appreciate what they have. It is part of the human ethos, to make a goal and strive to get it. That’s when people will put the work into becoming the best version of themselves. When they are told what to do and have no skin in the game there is also no effort put in.

3. Money Trade

It is funny really that I still have this conversation with people today. The reality is that in our modern world we exchange time for money. My mortgage company won’t accept bread or chickens as payment. Doesn’t it sound kind of ridiculous when it’s said out loud? Spiritual guides and healers live in the modern world and have financial obligations just the same as every other human. They have chosen to be of services like a nurse or teacher. They have studied and often give up a lot to do what they do for others. Do they not deserve to be compensated fairly?

Knowledge is power. What you do with knowledge depends on how you gained it. If people are constantly searching for free guidance they will also be searching for the perfect message. Keep looking until they find what fits their narrative. When you decide to go to an alternative holistic healer know that you will have to do the work that is needed. That will take work on your part. When you invest money into your own healing you will also invest in your time to do the work.
