Looking back and reflecting on the past year helps to identify things that went well and the gaps in your skills, knowledge or business, and find a better way to do things and in a more efficient way. It involves the consideration and examination of your actions for the purpose of learning and development.

Reflecting helps to celebrate your achievements and wins, and think about the successes that you can replicate next year. It’s also important to reflect on the things that didn’t go as planned, record your learnings and think how you could improve next time.

Here are 10 reflective questions to help you review the past year:

  1. What was your biggest achievement of 2021?

  2. How did it make you feel?

  3. What worked well and why?

  4. What didn’t work well and why?

  5. What challenges did you face?

  6. How did you overcome these challenges?

  7. What obstacles did you not manage to overcome and why?

  8. What do you wish you had done differently?

  9. What tasks/things did you love doing?

  10. What tasks/things you didn’t like doing?

Remember to be reasonable with yourself. Things that might have gone not the way you wanted are not an indicator of something negative. Look at those things from a different perspective and see what you can learn from them. You can only do better next time.

After reflecting on the past year, look at the goals that you set at the beginning of this year and take a moment to appreciate how much effort, time and energy it took you to get to where you are now.

Then spend some time setting goals for next year but remember that all your goals have to be SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound). If a goal feels too big, break it down into smaller goals and make a list of action steps that will get you closer to these goals.
