Your Vision Isn't Ahead of You, It's Waiting for You to Catch Up

You've been chasing it. Refining the strategy, updating the roadmap, working toward a future version of something you can almost, but not quite, see. What if the problem isn't the pace? What if vision doesn't work the way you've been taught?

What is entrainment?
In 1665, a Dutch physicist named Christiaan Huygens noticed something unusual. Two pendulum clocks mounted on the same wall, set to different rhythms, would over time begin to swing in perfect synchrony, not because anyone adjusted them, but because they were close enough to influence each other.
He called it entrainment, the tendency of two oscillating systems to fall into phase with each other when they share the same field.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School have since documented entrainment at every scale of biological life, from the synchronization of cells within a single organism to the way circadian rhythms lock to the rising and setting of the sun. The pattern is everywhere, systems don't move toward each other through force. They move into coherence through proximity and resonance. This is not a metaphor. It is how fields actually work, and it changes everything about how you understand vision.
How leaders learn to vision
Most leaders learn to vision as a forward-reaching act. You identify where you want to go, build the bridge between here and there, set milestones, track metrics, and close the distance between your current reality and the future you're building toward. It sounds logical. It feels productive. It keeps you permanently oriented toward something that isn't here yet.
The exhaustion this produces is specific. It's not the exhaustion of working hard, it's the exhaustion of perpetual becoming, of leading from a place of not-yet, of always being in motion toward something that stays just far enough ahead to keep you moving.
There's a quieter possibility most leadership training never names, not that the vision is wrong, but that you're relating to it incorrectly.
Vision as a field
What if your vision isn't a destination? What if it's a frequency, already present, already coherent, and your work is not to build toward it, but to become close enough that you begin to entrain to it?
This is not passive. Entrainment requires proximity. It requires that you bring yourself, your nervous system, your attention, your presence into the same field as what you're moving toward, often before you can articulate what that is.
The leaders who describe their clearest moments of vision rarely describe a planning session. They describe a walk, a silence, a conversation that went somewhere unexpected, a moment of complete presence in which something simply became clear, not because they figured it out, but because they stopped moving away from it. That clarity wasn't inspiration. It was entrainment. The vision was always there. The field was coherent. What changed was the distance between the leader and the frequency at which they were already moving within.
What this changes
If vision is something you entrain to rather than chase, then the question changes entirely.
The old question, "How do I get there faster?" The new question, "What is creating distance between me and what I already know?"
The answers are rarely strategic. They are almost always frequency related, the relationship with time that keeps you permanently behind, the need to stay consistent, readable, known, which requires you to speak only about what you've already arrived at and never from what is still forming, the activation in the nervous system that makes stillness feel like falling behind.
These are not motivation problems. They are coherence problems, and they cannot be solved by adding more strategy to a system that is already moving away from its own signal.
The leaders who navigate this turn their attention inward before they look outward. They stop mistaking movement for progress. They learn to distinguish between the momentum of genuine entrainment, which feels less like effort and more like inevitability, and the momentum of perpetual pursuit, which feels like running toward a horizon. One is coherence in motion. The other is a very sophisticated way of staying separate from what you already know.
The vision that waited
There is a particular quality to the clarity that arrives when you stop chasing. It doesn't arrive with fanfare. It arrives the way a held breath releases, as something that was already true becoming undeniable. The pieces weren't missing. The direction was always there. What changed was your willingness to be still enough to let the field close the distance.
This is what the signs of becoming a New Earth leader point toward, not a new strategy, but a different relationship with what is already known, the recalibration of a nervous system that has been running toward something it was already inside of.
Your vision isn't ahead of you. It never was. It has been waiting, with extraordinary patience, for you to stop moving away from it.
Coming into range
You don't need a new vision. You need proximity to the one that's already coherent. That means slowing where you've been accelerating, releasing what you've been curating, letting the field do what fields do, which is draw into coherence everything that is close enough and still enough to be moved.
If something in this landed, if you felt the exhale of recognition rather than the pressure of a new task, then you are already closer than you think.
The Mirror Path is the space where that proximity becomes visible, where what you've been moving away from finally has room to come forward. Not because you figured it out. Because you stopped running.
