We can thank the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for discovering light therapy. While testing different wavelengths of light to stimulate plant growth in space, they discovered that certain lights drastically increased cellular activity. Every cell in our body contains mitochondria, which store energy in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to fuel cellular rejuvenation and healing. NASA found that 633nm (Red Light), 532nm (Green Light), and 415nm (Blue Light) significantly increase the body’s light sensitivity and ATP production.

Building upon these principles, LED therapy – also known as low-level light therapy (LLLT) or Photobiomodulation (PBM) – has evolved into a non-thermal treatment that uses visible and near-infrared light to stimulate these intracellular processes. Though a graduate student of Nick Holonyak invented the yellow LED light in 1972, its specific therapeutic effects were discovered years later. Found between 565 and 590nm on the visible light spectrum with a frequency of 510-530 THz, yellow LED light safely and painlessly penetrates the skin at a shallow range of 0.5mm to 2mm. This is shallower than red light, yet it yields uniquely powerful benefits for the skin, which I will explain in this article.

Skin conditions yellow LED light therapy benefits

Skin texture improvement

Yellow LED light therapy enhances the skin’s structure by increasing collagen production, a protein and connective tissue that keeps our skin firm and youthful. It also improves elasticity, texture and overall cell regeneration. It reduces fine lines, wrinkles, and the size of pores. It’s excellent for skin rejuvenation.

Optimizes Recovery

Supports natural microcirculation and cell renewal, helping skin recover its radiant appearance after intense cosmetic treatments.

Corrects and balances skin tone

Yellow light therapy reduces sunburns or inflammation, heals UV radiation damage, and lightens dark spots for a more uniform skin tone. It increases blood flow in the skin dermis, which helps eliminate redness and rosacea.

Helps with pigmentation

Yellow LED light therapy benefits all skin tones. Darker skin tones benefit the most because it reduces the appearance of hyperpigmentation issues, such as sun spots, age spots, and melasma. Yellow lights’ anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties help decrease pigment production. They also enhance cell turnover by shedding old, pigmented skin cells, allowing newer, brighter skin cells to rise to the surface.

Lymphatic drainage

Yellow LED light penetrates the skin’s shallow level and promotes lymphatic drainage to improve the removal of toxins, puffiness and bloating from the treated area. Yellow light therapy makes the skin appear healthier despite not increasing its health.

Blemish support & revitalization

Yellow LED light therapy optimizes surface cell function, encouraging rapid skin recovery and a more resilient complexion. Supporting the skin's natural defences helps manage the appearance of blemish-prone skin. Its deeply soothing properties work to visibly calm the redness, swelling, and puffiness often associated with breakouts and intensive cosmetic procedures, leaving the skin looking balanced and restored.

Improves mood

Yellow light increases serotonin production, enhancing Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and promoting feelings of warmth and comfort.

Sleep regulation

Yellow light therapy can help regulate sleep patterns by producing melatonin, improving sleep quality and daytime alertness. Its warm glow also aids stress relief and relaxation, making it ideal for use after dusk.

Comparison of yellow LED and IPL and laser light

In my holistic aesthetics/medical spa, I use 580 nm of yellow IPL Intense Pulse Light for skin rejuvenation. It alleviates sun spots and superficial veins by 50% and improves collagen production by 100%. IPL is a broadband light condensed with a reflective material that gives the same results as a laser with less pain and shorter recovery time. Each handpiece of my IPL device sends out a specific wavelength of pulsating light. Specific skin issues may respond better to IPL or laser. IPL treats a range of skin conditions at the same time. However, unlike the Yellow LED light, it does not remove age spots.

Since Laser treatments are more intense, recovery time is longer. The results are more noticeable with fewer sessions. Isolation from the sun is necessary to avoid sun damage recurrence. Dermatologists offer medical-grade IPL or Laser light therapy, which has higher settings. A trained professional performs a medical history to determine when someone qualifies for IPL and Laser light therapy.

Additional considerations

  • Temporary side effects: Some individuals may experience temporary redness, stinging, burning, light sensitivity, or rash.

  • Eye safety: Light-blocking eye goggles should be worn during LED therapy to avoid potential eye damage, especially for those with eye problems or on photosensitive medications.

  • Photosensitive products: Certain medications and foods can increase light sensitivity, including antibiotics, antidepressants, and acne treatments with retinoids. Avoid using LED therapy light masks at home while taking these medications.

Conclusion

Historically, Traditional Chinese Medicine has also used yellow light therapy to address health concerns, rooted in the cultural belief that different colors heal specific areas of the body. Today, modern yellow LED light therapy serves as a highly convenient, non-invasive way to improve the appearance of your skin. Because it possesses deeply soothing and anti-inflammatory effects, it is ideal for addressing surface-level skin concerns like redness, sun damage, and rosacea, while offering exceptional benefits for patients looking to correct darker pigmentation.

Integrating yellow LED light therapy into your regular skincare protocol can lead to noticeable improvements in both your skin health and overall well-being.
