Pubs are not fading away; they're evolving. In this post-pandemic landscape marked by rising expenses and shifting expectations, traditional pubs must adapt to survive. But with the right transformation, we can ensure the Great British pub thrives in the future. What’s truly going on with pubs in the UK?

A medium close up of young couple who are sitting and enjoying a hot drink together whilst on a weekend break away to Newton by the Sea they are relaxing in a dog friendly restaurant.

In 2024 alone, over 300 pubs across the UK permanently shut their doors, largely due to skyrocketing costs, staffing issues, and declining patronage. The media highlights this downturn, while social media pokes fun at deserted establishments. But there's one vital aspect they overlook: community. Pubs have always reflected the people they serve. Once they stop catering to the community, they lose their essence.

With experience from consulting with over 120 venues and successfully operating multiple pub, I’ve witnessed firsthand what succeeds, what falters, and what fundamental shifts are taking place.

What sets thriving pubs apart today

Let’s move past nostalgia. The successful pubs of today do more than simply serve drinks; they craft experiences.

They’re versatile. Families have a dining area, sports enthusiasts have their social space, and remote workers find cozy corners. One venue can serve many purposes.

They’re online. Easily found on Google, active on social media, and prompt in responding to feedback, your digital presence is as crucial as your physical entrance.

They’re community-driven. Hosting local events, spearheading charity initiatives, and hiring from within the community. If you’re not integrated into the local narrative, you risk being forgotten.

Gone are the days when “same again?” was sufficient to foster loyalty. Today’s customers crave connection, value, and a sense of purpose in their spending.

The three pillars for ensuring your pub's future

In my forthcoming book, "Pubs: The New Era," I outline a comprehensive strategy for transforming pubs. Here’s a snapshot:

1. Prioritize hospitality over mere service

Service is delivering a drink; hospitality means remembering preferences and checking in on how their family is doing. It’s the warmth you create that encourages repeat visits.

2. Cultivate a community that feels like family

We don’t design pubs for statistics; we create them for individuals. Children should feel welcome, seniors should find comfort, and everyone should be acknowledged. When your pub becomes an extension of the home, it becomes indispensable.

3. Merge profit with purpose

Achieving over 72% GP on your menu doesn’t equate to serving subpar food. It involves understanding portion sizes, cost per gram, and minimizing waste. My MenuWiz app assists independent operators in mastering these aspects without the hassle of spreadsheets or guesswork.

The modern pub operator is defined

Today’s publican juggles multiple roles: host, marketer, HR leader, compliance officer, social media manager, and community advocate. We are no longer merely custodians of beer; we are guardians of authentic experiences.

To earn respect from policymakers and suppliers, we must approach pubs as legitimate businesses. This begins with a mindset shift and an evolved business model.

Call to action: The new era demands visionary leaders

The pub is not extinct, but uninspired establishments are. If you manage a pub, now is the time to innovate. And if you believe in the pub culture, engage, advocate, and invest your resources in venues that deserve your patronage.

This isn't just about preserving tradition; it's about creating something exceptional.
