As I often get this question, it is essential to outline this process so parents better understand what to expect. Please save this info as you might need it later!

  • At the first piano lesson, your teacher will introduce you to the instrument, focusing on exploring the keyboard, white and black keys, and very simple rhythmic and pitch exercises, which gives your kid a good foundation for further studies.

  • Learning takes time, especially at the beginning of your studies, and you need to be patient. You don’t want to push and discourage the child. We won’t expect you to be playing anything instantly at this stage!

  • If you’re entirely new to music, we will also explain how musical notes are written and what each means about the piano keys. Of course, some actual playing will be involved, too, and a scale or simple melody is likely to be where you start.

  • At such young age, kids should be allowed to explore and learn at their own pace, and the best way to keep them curious and cultivate an interest in music is to sing, dance, and listen to some music at home!

  • Many people taking up piano overestimate how much progress they’ll make in a short period. Learning the piano is a challenge, though a rewarding one. After six months of piano lessons, many people find that they can read most of the notes on the staff and play several scales and pieces pretty well!

  • It is always difficult to predict where you will be within one year of lessons. It depends upon the amount of time you practice, how many classes you take per week, and your dedication/passion for thinking about the piano outside of the lessons. The piano will always be around for you to play, and you will achieve your musical goals as long as you stick to it and practice daily!
