Unlocking Body Intelligence Through the Physical Dimension of Wellness

In the earlier dimensions of the 8D series, we explored the inner world, the spiritual, emotional, and mental landscapes that shape meaning, identity, and belief. This is where intention is formed, values are clarified, and purpose is named. This is the physical dimension, where awareness alone is incomplete. Insight without embodiment stays theoretical. Every spiritual realization eventually asks a deeper question: Can you live it?

The physical dimension is where the invisible becomes visible. It is where spirit meets structure, where belief meets behavior, and where intention meets tissue. The body is not separate from the spiritual journey, it is the instrument through which that journey is expressed. Before words, there was sensation. Before belief, there was rhythm. Before thought, there was breath.
The body is the first place we experience life and the last place truth must land. It carries our prayers, our practices, our wounds, and our wisdom. Every unprocessed emotion, every unintegrated insight, and every unresolved experience eventually asks to be felt somewhere, in posture, breath, tension, fatigue, or vitality.
This truth echoes a warning offered long ago to Theodore Roosevelt by his father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., who told him, “Theodore, you have the mind, but you have not the body.” His words weren’t an insult, they were a diagnosis, a reminder that intellect without embodiment creates imbalance, that knowing without conditioning leads to fragility, and that spirit without physical grounding cannot be sustained.
This is why the physical dimension is not about appearance or performance. It is about integration. In this phase of the 8D journey, we move from asking, “What do I believe?” to “What does my body believe is safe?” From “What do I know?” to “What do I embody consistently?” From “Who am I becoming?” to “Can my nervous system support that becoming?”
Spiritual growth without physical grounding leads to disconnection. Physical training without spiritual awareness leads to domination. Wholeness lives in the middle.
The physical dimension teaches us that healing is not an idea. It is a felt experience. The body is not something to conquer, but something to listen to. True alignment happens when the nervous system, the breath, and the body are given permission to participate in the same truth the spirit already knows.
This is where the work becomes real, wisdom becomes movement, and healing becomes embodied. Welcome to the physical dimension of the 8D series, where spirit learns how to live in the body.
Beyond anatomy: Understanding the body as a living communication system
I recently completed a Body Healing Practitioner Certification, and in many ways, the course didn’t introduce anything new, it reaffirmed what I’ve always known to be true about the body. Everything we need is already inside us. The body catalogs every experience we encounter, good, bad, or indifferent. Even when the conscious mind forgets, the body remembers.
Those memories are archived within what I often refer to as the body’s electrical circuitry, the nervous system. Those stored memories, in turn, impact the other feedback loops. Experience leaves an imprint whether we acknowledge it or not.
I became a personal trainer at the age of 24. Even then, I consistently told my clients that the body operates through eleven feedback loops. At the time, I was ahead of my language. I didn’t yet have the words to fully articulate the depth of the concept, but the knowing was there.
Now, fifteen years later, I finally have the framework to explain what I sensed intuitively. Recently, I revisited a model I created in 2016 while working at my father’s gym. Seeing it again confirmed something powerful: my philosophy hadn’t changed, my understanding had matured. What are the eleven feedback loops, you may ask?
When I refer to the body’s eleven feedback loops, I’m speaking about the major systems that constantly communicate, adapt, and regulate in real time:
Integumentary system (skin, hair, nails)
Gastrointestinal system (stomach, gut)
Nervous system (central and autonomic)
Muscular system (muscles, ligaments, tendons)
Skeletal system (bones and stabilizing structures)
Endocrine system (hormones)
Respiratory system (oxygen, blood)
Cardiovascular system (heart, blood)
Lymphatic system (detoxification, immune support)
Digestive system (breakdown, absorption, full system)
Urinary system (waste removal, fluid balance)
I won’t go into depth here, you can research the physiological functions of each system if needed. The purpose of this essay isn’t anatomy. It’s alignment.
Body intelligence is not abstract. It is not mystical. It is operational. It lives in the body’s ability to continuously sense, respond, adapt, and regulate through what I’ve long described as the eleven feedback loops of the body. These systems are not isolated parts, they are communication networks, constantly exchanging information with one another under the direction of the nervous system.
Most of the body’s processes are automatically regulated. You do not consciously decide to digest food, circulate blood, filter waste, regulate hormones, or maintain posture. These functions occur beneath awareness, governed by intelligence that predates thought. The body is always responding to the environment, both internal and external, long before the mind forms a narrative about what’s happening.
The eleven feedback loops – integumentary, gastrointestinal, nervous, muscular, skeletal, endocrine, respiratory, cardiovascular, lymphatic, digestive, and urinary are the mechanisms through which this intelligence expresses itself. Together, they form a living system that constantly answers one central question: Am I safe, or do I need to survive?
When consciousness is disconnected from the body, these feedback loops operate in the background without interpretation. Signals like tension, fatigue, shallow breathing, digestive distress, or restlessness are ignored, overridden, or normalized. Over time, the body adapts by speaking louder through pain, illness, dysfunction, or burnout.
Coherence emerges when conscious awareness meets these feedback loops without domination, something we will return to later in the article. Instead of asking, “How do I push through this?” the question becomes, “What is my body communicating right now?” Instead of overriding sensation, we begin to interpret it.
Tight muscles are no longer just a flexibility issue, they may be a signal of prolonged vigilance. Digestive disruption is no longer random, it may reflect a nervous system that does not feel safe enough to rest and repair. Hormonal imbalance is no longer a personal failure, it may be the endocrine system compensating for chronic stress.
This is where consciousness is imperative, not to control the body’s intelligence, but to listen closely. When awareness is brought to the eleven feedback loops, the body no longer has to escalate its signals. Regulation begins not because we force change, but because the system finally feels recognized. Healing, in this sense, is not something we impose, it is something we allow.
Body intelligence, then, is the meeting point between physiology and awareness. It is the moment consciousness stops hovering above the body and chooses to inhabit it. When that happens, the feedback loops don’t just keep us alive, they guide us toward balance, coherence, and wholeness.
As powerful as this meeting between consciousness and body intelligence can be, it is not always easy because listening to the body often requires us to confront what we’ve spent years overriding, suppressing, or ignoring.
How trauma disrupts the body’s intelligence
Because my company is trauma-informed, it is important to address the negative impacts trauma can have on the body. Trauma is often described as psychological, something that lives in memory, thought, or emotion. But trauma is not confined to the mind. It is a biological experience that can reorganize the body around survival.
When the nervous system fails to return to baseline, every system downstream must adapt. The control centers, our central nervous system and autonomic nervous system (CNS and ANS), can become out of sync. The central nervous system consists of the brain and spinal cord. It is responsible for processing information, creating meaning, and coordinating conscious thought, movement, and perception. The CNS interprets sensory input and helps decide how the body should respond.
The autonomic nervous system regulates the body’s automatic, unconscious functions, such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, and hormonal release. It governs survival responses and recovery states, shifting the body between activation and rest without conscious control.
Trauma can alter signaling. The body may become hypervigilant or shut down. Stress responses can activate faster and deactivate more slowly, making recovery less efficient.
I recognized my own dysregulation during a conversation with a psychology professor. I described habits I’d normalized, scanning every room for exits, calculating people’s size and intent, and needing my back to the wall on dates with exits in my peripheral vision. He suggested I might be experiencing hypervigilance associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
To me, what he said made sense. My Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) score was 9 out of 10. My early childhood was chaotic and unpredictable. Over time, my nervous system shifted from being hyperreactive to feeling numb and dissociative, another survival adaptation.
That’s a deeper conversation for another day, but it clarified something essential. These weren’t personality traits, they were nervous system strategies. Backing up, when the nervous system is out of sync with itself, every other system downstream can also be negatively impacted. Here are some potential impacts:
Endocrine system (hormones): Chronic nervous system activation can contribute to elevated levels of stress hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. Sleep, metabolism, blood sugar regulation, and sex hormones may fall out of rhythm. What looks like burnout can sometimes reflect the body compensating for prolonged stress. I’ve seen this play out in people close to me through disrupted sleep, loss of appetite, and persistent fatigue despite rest.
Muscular system: Muscles contract to protect the body during a perceived threat. When the stress response remains active, those contractions may not fully release. Chronic tightness in the jaw, neck, shoulders, hips, or lower back can sometimes reflect prolonged muscular guarding rather than weakness.
Skeletal system: Long-term muscular guarding can affect posture and load distribution. Over time, these patterns may contribute to compression, joint stress, and imbalance. Structure can reflect state.
Integumentary system (skin, hair, and nails): The skin can respond to changes in nervous system activity. Chronic stress may contribute to inflammation and slower repair, sometimes appearing alongside concerns such as rashes, eczema, hair thinning, or delayed healing.
Cardiovascular system: Prolonged stress can affect resting heart rate, blood pressure, and heart rate variability, which reflects changes in the timing between heartbeats and is influenced by autonomic nervous system activity. A body that remains in a prolonged state of activation may have greater difficulty returning to a restorative state.
Respiratory system: Breathing can become shallow and protective during stress. Changes in breathing patterns and carbon dioxide (CO₂) tolerance may contribute to sensations associated with anxiety or panic. Breath often reflects nervous system state.
Digestive and gastrointestinal systems: Survival states can temporarily redirect energy and blood flow away from digestive processes. Prolonged stress may also affect digestion, gut function, and appetite. Symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), bloating, nausea, and food sensitivities can have many possible causes, with stress sometimes acting as one contributing factor.
Lymphatic and immune systems: Chronic stress can influence immune function and inflammatory processes. When the body remains under prolonged stress, its ability to recover and regulate efficiently may be affected.
Urinary system: Stress responses can influence bladder activity, fluid regulation, and elimination patterns. Even functions we rarely think about consciously can respond to changes in nervous system activity.

The practice: From understanding trauma to embodying regulation
Psychiatrist and trauma researcher Bessel van der Kolk, author of The Body Keeps the Score, brought mainstream language to a truth long observed by clinicians and healers alike: the body can carry the effects of experiences that the conscious mind may not fully remember. Trauma is not confined to memory or emotion, it can affect physiology, reshape nervous system responses, alter self-regulation, and influence sensation and behavior.
Somatic trauma pioneer Peter A. Levine, author of Waking the Tiger, extended this understanding through his theory that trauma can involve unfinished survival responses within the nervous system. Together, these frameworks point to a critical insight: trauma can dysregulate systems, not just emotions.
Van der Kolk’s decades of clinical research helped broaden trauma treatment beyond talk therapy alone and toward approaches that also recognize the body and nervous system. His work explores how traumatic experiences can affect memory, brain function, and regulation while continuing to be expressed through the body. Healing, in this view, may involve restoring safety and regulation through approaches such as movement, breathwork, somatic awareness, yoga, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and neurofeedback, rather than relying on cognitive insight alone.
Levine’s work brings the focus even closer to the body’s instincts. In nature, animals may shake, tremble, or move following a threat. Levine interprets these responses as part of the nervous system’s process of recovering from survival activation. Humans, however, are often taught to suppress similar impulses, to stay composed, to “be strong,” and to move on.
Within Levine’s framework, suppressing these survival responses may contribute to unresolved activation that can later be experienced through anxiety, chronic pain, emotional reactivity, or numbness.
In Waking the Tiger, Levine discusses the 1976 Chowchilla kidnapping, in which 26 children were kidnapped from a school bus and held underground for approximately 30 hours. One child, Bob Barklay, remained actively involved in organizing and carrying out the group’s escape. Levine notes that Barklay later appeared to experience less severe traumatic aftereffects than many of the other children and uses the case to illustrate his theory about active mobilization and the completion of survival responses.
The difference, within Levine’s interpretation, was not character. It was completion. This is where body intelligence becomes practice, not philosophy.
When the nervous system is given opportunities to safely move through survival activation, regulation may become more accessible. The body does not always need to be forced toward healing. Sometimes, it needs the right conditions in which regulation can occur. Both perspectives ultimately point toward one central idea: conscious participation can help us move toward greater regulation and alignment.

From understanding trauma to embodying regulation
In a previous article, I mentioned my background in martial arts. Around that same time, I was introduced to the concept of sublimation, the process of redirecting instinctual impulses into socially constructive or culturally meaningful expression.
My own dysregulation often manifested as anger and rage. Due to early abuse and chronic distrust, my nervous system stayed primed for threat. Fighting became my outlet. In my mind, anyone could get it. Through martial arts and language, I learned to intervene consciously. Awareness didn’t erase the impulse, but it redirected it. My consciousness began to work with my body instead of against it.
That, in essence, is the practice: not suppressing instinct or bypassing sensation, but meeting body intelligence with awareness and choice. When that meeting happens consistently, regulation becomes possible, and so does growth.
Instead of overriding sensation, we begin to interpret it. Tight muscles are no longer just a flexibility issue, they may be a signal of prolonged vigilance. Digestive disruption is no longer random, stress and nervous system activation may be contributing factors that affect the body’s ability to rest and digest.
Hormonal changes are no longer viewed as a personal failure, prolonged stress may influence endocrine function and hormonal regulation. This is consciousness descending into the body, not to control it, but to listen.
When awareness is brought to the eleven feedback loops, we become better able to recognize and respond to the body’s signals. Regulation begins not because we force change, but because we become more attentive to what the system is communicating. Healing, in this sense, is not simply something we impose, it is something we learn to support.
Body intelligence, then, is the meeting point between physiology and awareness. It is the moment consciousness stops hovering above the body and chooses to inhabit it. When that happens, the feedback loops don’t just keep us alive, they can help guide us toward balance, coherence, and wholeness.
To begin this process, I ask you to try a simple task. I would like you to begin and end your day with 5 to 10 minutes of savasana, or corpse pose.
Savasana is not simply passive rest. It can be an intentional practice of stillness and nervous system regulation. When practiced for 5 to 10 minutes at the beginning and end of the day, it can create an opportunity for the body to slow down and settle. In stillness, heart rate may slow, breathing may deepen, and muscles may begin to release unconscious tension as the body moves toward a more restorative state.
During this practice, it’s natural for thoughts to arise: plans for the day, unfinished tasks, conversations, and responsibilities. Do not try to repress or silence them. Let the thoughts pass through you. Acknowledge them without judgment, then gently redirect your attention to the present moment.
Rather than returning to the mind, return to the body. Notice how your body feels at that moment. Notice the weight of your limbs, the points of contact with the ground, the rhythm of your breath, areas of tension, and areas of ease.
This redirection isn’t about forcing focus, it’s about training awareness. Each time you notice the mind drifting and choose to return to sensation, you strengthen the connection between consciousness and body intelligence.

There are no goals and no performance, just presence. Notice what your body reveals when it is finally allowed to speak. Healing doesn’t start with effort. It starts with attention.
