To quote myself… “There are 8 billion people living on earth. There are 8 billion different truths!” It is an important perspective. Not everybody is like you. Think like you. Behave like you or Act like you. It is a concept, lesson, or principle I am trying to teach my children.

World illustration with people

Imagine the face-off: Two angry, trembling children, red-faced and shouting, accusing the other of being wrong or lying.

Both are there, standing in their truth. Both believe that they are in the right and the other is in the wrong. Right there, two truths.

Add me into the mix, and we will have three truths.

Another scenario, this time from the workplace: You are leading your team to deliver on a high-profile project or outcome. The eyes of the leadership are on you and it.

At the eleventh hour, a direct report tells you that the project or outcome will fail as a minor detail has yet to be signed off by a supporting function.

You focus on an emergency escalation, perhaps burning some bridges to reach the senior leadership of the supporting function to get the signoff.

Reflecting on what went on, you did what you thought was correct. You were professional, diligent, focused, responsible, and accountable. Your direct report, in your mind, was not.

How you measure what is professional, diligent, focused, responsible, and accountable may differ significantly from your direct report.

Simply relying on common sense is not an answer because “if you don’t know what you don’t know,” you can only work from what you do know.

Communication is essential when setting expectations, values, and outcomes. These should be discussed openly to align what they mean to each team member.

If they are unclear, then it stands to reason that there is more than one perspective, ergo, more than one truth.
