When I first ventured into entrepreneurship, I thought freedom was its greatest appeal: freedom to make decisions, build something meaningful, and take risks. But over the years, I’ve learned that with freedom comes an equal need for accountability. Without it, progress falters.

The photo shows a mirrored image of a confident woman with long brown hair, dressed in black, standing against a dark background with her hand thoughtfully resting on her chin.

My roles as CEO of two moving companies and founder of a digital marketing company have taught me that accountability is not just a buzzword; it’s a lifeline. For me, it’s deeply personal, integral to my daily decisions and the values that guide my businesses. Embracing accountability has shaped my entrepreneurial journey, whether it's guiding my team at Ameritex Movers to deliver a smooth and stress-free move in Texas or supporting entrepreneurs through marketing strategies at my agency. Here's a closer look at how embracing accountability has shaped my entrepreneurial journey and why it should matter to you, too.

Owning your path

One of the hardest lessons I’ve faced as a business owner is owning the consequences of every decision I make. Some decisions led to great wins, like expanding our services to new locations, but others weren’t as successful. And that’s okay.

What matters is the willingness to own your outcomes. Shifting blame may feel easier in the moment, but accountability is where growth happens. It’s the foundation for resilience and trust, both with yourself and with those around you.

Goal-setting with intention

At Ameritex Movers and Ameritex Houston, we live by core values: clear communication, integrity, and accountability. These aren’t just words, they’re a compass. For me, goal-setting works the same way.

Whenever I set a professional or personal goal, I break it into actionable steps. For instance, when I launched Miss Congeniality & Co., I didn’t just focus on the big picture of helping businesses grow. I outlined the specific services I wanted to offer, created timelines, and checked in with myself regularly to stay on course.

It’s not just about dreaming big; it’s about being intentional with every step you take.

Building a support system

I’m a big believer in the power of partnerships. In pageantry, I leaned on my mentors and peers for guidance and encouragement. In business, I’ve surrounded myself with people who challenge me to stay true to my goals.

For example, I’ve found immense value in having accountability partners. Whether it’s a colleague who pushes me to meet deadlines or my team at Ameritex Movers holding each other to high standards, the support system we create is invaluable. Accountability is easier when you’re not going at it alone.

Leading by example

As a leader, I’ve learned that accountability starts with me. If I want my team to embrace ownership, I need to model it first. That means admitting when I make mistakes, meeting commitments, and staying aligned with our values.

I remember a moment early in my career when a mistake in planning led to a scheduling conflict during a busy season. It wasn’t anyone’s fault but mine, and instead of brushing it off, I addressed it openly with my team. That moment taught me the importance of transparency, and it deepened the trust within our organization.

Embracing mistakes as lessons

Some of my greatest growth moments have come from failure. I’ve made choices that didn’t work out, and instead of letting them define me, I’ve used them as learning opportunities.

For instance, early on in Miss Congeniality & Co., I launched a campaign that didn’t resonate with clients. It was humbling, but it also prompted me to ask for feedback, reevaluate my approach, and fine-tune my strategy. Mistakes aren’t setbacks, they’re stepping stones.

The role of consistency

If accountability is the engine, consistency is the fuel. I’ve found that the small, everyday actions like following through on promises or showing up even when it’s hard make the biggest impact over time.

In my business, I emphasize this with my team. We don’t just focus on completing projects; we’re consistent in delivering exceptional service and living out our values. It’s that commitment that keeps us moving forward, literally and figuratively.

A personal commitment

For me, accountability isn’t just about achieving success; it’s about staying true to who I am. It’s the reason I take time to reflect, ask myself hard questions, and adjust when necessary. It’s also why I celebrate milestones both big and small.

Whether it’s launching a new initiative or simply getting through a challenging week, I believe in taking a moment to recognize progress. Those celebrations remind me why I started and inspire me to keep going.

Why accountability matters

Accountability isn’t just a professional practice; it’s a way of life. It’s about showing up, taking ownership, and aligning your actions with your values.

For entrepreneurs, it’s the difference between stagnation and growth. It keeps you grounded while helping you aim higher. And, most importantly, it builds a foundation of trust with your team, your clients, and yourself.

So, to anyone chasing their dreams, I encourage you to embrace accountability, not as a chore, but as an opportunity. It’s not always easy, but it’s always worth it.
