There’s no entourage. No booming voice. No need for a spotlight. But there’s a shift, an unspoken yet undeniable energy that signals the arrival of a man not driven by ego, but by assignment. A man called to do more than lead, called to transform, to elevate, and to serve.

Brainz Magazine cover story features a person smiling, with the text: "The Man Who Built a Movement, Darrin Thomas" by Kiara Streater.

“Build what you wish you had.” Darrin Thomas

When Darrin Thomas walks into a room, everything changes.

For over two decades, Thomas has done far more than organize events. He has built infrastructure. He has built identity. He has built a legacy.

With a steady hand and unwavering faith, he has reshaped South Carolina’s Black economic landscape. And in doing so, he’s inspired thousands of entrepreneurs, dreamers, and doers to believe again, believe in possibility, believe in themselves, and believe in the power of collective purpose.

More than a weekend

To the casual observer, the Columbia Black Expo is a colorful weekend of vibrant culture, lively vendors, and spirited connection, a celebration of Black excellence in full bloom.

But for Darrin Thomas, it’s something far more sacred.

It’s not just an event. It’s a calling. A divine assignment. A spiritual blueprint for liberation through economics. A mission to resurrect hope, restore dignity, and rebuild the narrative of what it means to thrive as a Black entrepreneur, creator, or family in the South.

The Expo was never just about selling products or booking stages. It’s about creating a foundation. One that could outlast trends, outlive hardship, and outshine adversity. A foundation built for unity, legacy, and generational impact.

This work isn’t just about economic empowerment. It’s a spiritual revival.

It’s about reminding Black communities of their brilliance, their inheritance, and their

God-given right to thrive

What began as a whisper, quiet and rooted in faith, has become one of the South’s most powerful cultural and economic movements. Where others saw voids, Darrin saw opportunity. He recognized the untapped potential of Black-owned businesses, the silent strength of unsung entrepreneurs, and the urgency of planting seeds in soil that had long been neglected.

So, instead of waiting for a seat at the table, he built one.

A table big enough for dreamers, doers, believers, and builders.

Today, that vision pulses in the heartbeat of every exhibitor, every vendor, and every guest who walks through the doors. This is more than an event. It’s a sanctuary for Black excellence. A sacred reunion. A spark that lights the path toward generational wealth and enduring legacy.

Darrin didn’t just create a platform.

He created a movement.

The road wasn’t easy

No legacy is built without resistance. And Darrin Thomas has weathered more than his share of storms.

From systemic challenges to spiritual trials, from funding barriers to societal doubt—he has faced it all with the holy trinity of leadership: grit, grace, and prayer.

“I didn’t start this for recognition,” Darrin says.

“I started it because I heard God say, ‘Build what you wish you had.’”

Raised in the Carolinas, Darrin understood what it felt like to be unseen—to hold dreams with no blueprint, to possess drive with no direction, to carry brilliance in a world that didn’t always recognize it.

Rather than surrender to that reality, he flipped it. He built bridges. First through his work with Black Pages USA, a publication that amplified Black businesses long before it was trendy. And then, through the creation of the Columbia Black Expo, a movement that continues to celebrate and elevate the brilliance of Black entrepreneurship.

“Faith is the cornerstone,” he says. “Everything I’ve built, I’ve built on prayer and people.”

A conductor of purpose

Darrin’s leadership doesn’t scream. It resonates.

He doesn’t command attention. He cultivates respect.

He is the conductor of a movement, quietly orchestrating every detail so that others can take center stage. His brilliance lies not in being the loudest voice in the room, but in creating rooms where everyone has a voice.

Every handshake on the Expo floor. Every vendor table curated with intention.

Every speaker who delivers truth to power.

Each piece is part of a sacred mosaic, a masterpiece designed to uplift, to connect, and to transform. What appears to be a weekend event is, in reality, a carefully choreographed movement of economic empowerment, cultural pride, and spiritual elevation.

Like a maestro, Darrin guides it all, heart forward, spirit led.

Beyond the expo

His impact doesn’t end when the doors close.

Outside the Expo gates, Darrin continues his work as a mentor, community builder, and spiritual guide. He counsels youth with hard-earned wisdom. He uplifts single mothers with quiet strength. He reminds elders that their dreams are not expired, they are evolving.

He is not chasing headlines.

He is chasing God’s assignment.

In this quiet obedience, his work has become a ministry, a healing space for anyone who has ever felt unseen, unheard, or unworthy. Through his words, his work, and his walk, lives are being transformed.

His legacy is not just witnessed.

It is felt in boardrooms, in barbershops, in neighborhoods, and in the minds of the next generation.

The movement lives on

On May 17, 2025, thousands will gather at the South Carolina State Fairgrounds, not simply to attend an event, but to join a movement.

A movement built on:

Legacy. Leadership. Faith. Resilience.

And one unwavering belief: When we come together, we rise together.

The weekend kicks off on May 16 with Taste of Black Columbia, a soul-stirring celebration of culinary excellence and cultural pride. What follows is more than a program, it’s a pilgrimage. From panel discussions to powerhouse speakers, every moment is designed to pour back into the people.

This is not just a date on the calendar.

It is a living, breathing reminder that Black brilliance is unstoppable.

Where vision meets opportunity. Where culture meets commerce.

Where excellence is not only seen, but celebrated.

Darrin Thomas didn’t just create an event. He ignited a legacy.

So whether you’re a first-time attendee or a lifelong supporter, know this

You’re not just attending an event. You’re stepping into a story.

You’re becoming part of a movement that was built with prayer, purpose, and powerful vision.

Because the movement lives on. And it’s only getting stronger.
